I recently asked for John's advice for selecting and cooking a piece of pork (I'm not really a very good cook) and between him and Allen (another member of the Troup Team) it was prepared and cooked surprisingly well ! It's an old-school village butchers shop with many of the customers shopping there for many, may years. Troup's also sells a selection of vegetables (displayed outside the shop), home-made pies and pates. Easy parking too with the old station car parking area opposite the shop. A really lovely, friendly place in a very nice Royal Deeside village. Five stars !

Macdonald Brothers did not disappoint. The choice and quality they had on dispay was huge for what was a realatively small shop. We decided on venison burgers and fillet steak - it was maybe a bit pricey but it was the real deal. The venison burgers were very tasty and filling and the fillet steak was very thick and tasted excellent. The service was first class - the standard of hygien displayed was first class and the butcher who served us was so helpful and friendly. A sham it is so far from home - maybe next time I'll bring some things home for the freezer

I've been on holiday in this area twice in last few months,got a roast first time,amazingsecond…read moretime was staying nearby for 10 days and had a freezer so got the pick n mix,7 for 25 pounds,which fed two of us for virtually the whole week,the mini roast beef joint was outstanding, lime and chill kebabs,Bombay chicken ,Chinese kebabs all great too,if I lived here,which I hopefully will in not too distant future my life would be simple as far as food goes,I saw wrappers from supermarket beef in the bin at place I was staying,what's that all about,the area that's known for the best beef in UK,who really has so little time they can't stop at one of the excellent butchers and fishmongers,or even pop in before work,they open early,with the best will in the world the supermarkets cannot begin to compare with the meat from a butcher,they can't hang it for the time needed to tendernise it ,it's impossible. If I had missed the butcher I'd make a vegetarian meal,and I'm a real carninivore,I just would not consider supermarket meat. Great shop,great value,great service,buckie you are lucky to have it!

Wonderful butcher in an accessible area of town…read more Paul Smith is open on a Saturday which is great if you work during the week. There is plenty of parking at the back. Inside you are welcomed by a small shop and butcher counter and lots of fresh veg outside. The staff are always friendly (even if you turn up 2 minutes before they close because you have forgotten the bacon for Sunday breakfast!) The shop sells local produce, Kelly of Cults breads and cakes and other veggies, chutneys and produce from the area. The butcher counter sells good meat and the staff will advise you on the best cuts or ways to cook the meat you are buying. This is a lovely local butcher and worth a visit.

Great, freshly caught lobster and crab…read more We stayed in lovely Johnshaven for two nights. Just around the corner from our place was Murry McBay. We were looking for some fresh seafood and asked them were to buy some. We were very happy to learn that we can purchase lobsters and crabs directly from them, freshly caught (and still alive). We even got a box for them. So we bought two nice-sized crabs and a lobster. And....it did cost....9£!!! I mean wow....you can forget any seafood counter at any grocery store. Unbeatable prices and freshness! We cooked them for dinner. Great great flavour...did I mention already how fresh they were? Yeah, I guess I did. One of the crabs was female and had loads of eggs....a feast for seafood-lovers! So, if you stay in Johnshaven...or anywhere close: Look no further! This is THE place! Not sure about opening times, we just walked by, asked and got lucky.
