BEWARE!!!! H&R Block are no tax "professionals" Especially this branch. I have never felt less confident in someone I hired for a professional service. We were ghosted by the CPA assigned to do our business taxes with no communication whatsoever until weeks after the deadline. After we finally got someone to respond and reassign the tax return by contacting corporate, it took another month for them to complete a very simple tax return. They caused us to miss the deadline by over a month which then caused to accrue fines. We were ensured that H&R Block themselves would take care of our late penalty. We asked multiple times for that statement in writing, to ensure that the penalty would be paid by them, when the time came. We were refused to get this in writing. Of course, now that the time has come to cover the late penalty that they caused, they have ghosted us again. Shame on Jose, the manager of this branch. It is despicable to take advantage of small businesses and make empty promises after your "professionals" completely failed us. read more

She's professional, friendly, and helps you out so much. As to receptionist , I feel like those change every year. It's not consistent. I set up an appointment to have the taxes done for my small business. The return is very simple since it is a new business with no income. I was assured they handled Taxes for small Businesses at this location. I showed up on time and the accountant was nice but useless. She stated they did not do business taxes there and I would have to go to Block Advisors. She then proceeded to say I didn't need to file taxes because it was a new business but I already knew she was incorrect. In total , I spent 3-5 minutes at their office , I was provided wrong information but she still charged me $50 consultation fee for nothing. I made an appointment, which was cancelled by them,,I made an a second appointment and, when I got there, she said $300.00 and up! i saw rosa. i had no income for the year of 2023 bc i had no job but i had won prizes from the price is right and needed someone to tell me whether i needed to file or not. rosa was extremely unclear that the 150 dollars she mentioned at the beginning of the encounter was the fee for the simple act of inputting the *two* forms i had and not what the government would be taking from me tax wise. the full fee price of 224 dollars was not told to me until after rosa had already filed my forms, leaving me no choice but to pay. i'm a student getting her masters, and as aforementioned i haven't had a job for the last year. i feel robbed, and stupid, and embarrassed, and frustrated. i wanted some simple help, and instead walked out with 900 dollars less than i had when i walked in between H&R block and the government. do anything else to file your taxes but go here, they'll bleed you dry. read more

Awful...I've had my taxes done by H&R Block several times and my experience here completely turned me off to them. Long story short, my state needed nothing more than to verify that I am who I say I am before issuing a refund. I wanted to go through H&R because I had originally filed using them and didn't want to miss anything. I came in on a Wednesday for a scheduled appointment. Sheryl (if that's how you spell it) was the only one in the office. After 45 minutes of confused rambling and talking to herself, she told me she scheduled me for another appointment on that Friday at 11 and to bring some additional paperwork. On Friday, I showed up at 11 and she stated that I wasn't her appointment and that someone else was supposed to show up. Thankfully for both of us, whoever that person was didn't show. After another hour of mindless babble, she told me that I'd have to do everything on my own anyways and I left the store having accomplished nothing. I can't stress this enough, Sheryl needs to be looked at by your upper management. She seemed like she didn't know she worked in a tax office and probably talked to herself more than she talked to me. There wasn't any kind of altercation, but she didn't appear to be all there and was unprofessional in more ways than one. I will not be returning to any of your offices in the future. read more

Save yourself the headache and hassle. Had to be transferred 4 times to different tax filers, still had it filed out of state when I've been a resident for 5 yrs. Had my I.D right in front of her and on file but still spelled my stress address wrong. I had to drop by 6 times in total, was treated horribly each time. I don't know if all H and R Blocks are this poorly trained at something they do day in and out but beware. Manager gave me "discount" on my taxes for all their mistakes, it was $50, at the same i still had $600 charge they couldnt explain. Said my total was $2330 when I walked out the Door, but Turns out my whole refund is only $534 and I'll have to contact the irs for stimulus owed. Again just do it yourself if youre thinking this an "easy" alternative, it's not. read more

I had an appt and I had upload all my tax forms prior to the appt. When I got there at my appt time Phyllis decided she need to make a phone call to another customer. So I waited even though I had an appt. When I finally was able to see her she had no idea my paperwork was uploaded in the system. Finally found my paperwork. I asked her about pricing and she threw out a ridiculous amount I would have to pay. She kept adding various things and saying expenses were high but she had not even looked at my expense sheet. Very rude and acted like she didn't want to be bothered. I obviously left without completing my taxes. I prefer to go elsewhere. read more

Maria has been the best tax preparer I have encountered. She simplified what I found as a complicated tax. Other tax preparers, including a highly rated Yelp private practice failed to take the time to explain and help me understand that I am getting the best help- I didn't. I did t know I could go to my employer and amend what they incorrectly placed on my 1099. They had placed my reimbursed expenses as income on my 1099 causing me to use my credit card to pay for taxes that should have been the company's worry not mine. She is down to earth, easy to speak with and she has a true desire to help you. I highly recommend her. She is now moved to the City Heights location. H&R Block is lucky to have her. read more

I have heard great things about H&R block, but no company has ever deserved ZERO stars as much as this place. They couldn't answer any of my questions, didn't get me any money back, and filed my taxes wrong so I ended up paying more than I should have.... Then didn't refund the $90 I flushed down the toilet to file with them. First of all.... The guy I met with had trouble speaking English, had NO IDEA that some states don't have state tax, Googled every question I asked him because he didn't know.... Left the office we were meeting in TWICE to go get help from coworkers asking them questions about forms... etc. Needless to say I was not confident about the whole thing.. Ended up filing my taxes because at the end of it I wasn't aware that after the 1 hour and 20 min long meeting I didn't have to file them... and because of the fact that I don't know about taxes and thought they 'must' have been right since they are a nationwide company that does a million of these a day... Well then I get a letter and a check from the IRS saying my taxes were filed wrong and I paid too much... Well that's great I got a check- but they filed my Federal taxes wrong? now what about state? because that was like 3x as much as the federal one when I paid it.... After all this hassle, I call them 4 days in a row asking to talk to a manager... The guy that filed my taxes wrong called me back... but I wasn't calling for him.. he doesn't know what hes doing... I was calling for a manager like I asked for 4 separate times. Finally Marcella calls me back (office manager). I tell her the situation and say I want my $90 back that I gave them to file my taxes wrong... She tells me that their guarantee is for ppl that had their taxes filed wrong and owe more money, not for people whose taxes were filed wrong and need money back.. (really? because I gave you all this money I didn't need to- so THAT makes sense)... and that she would "look over" my file if I want to come in there for another hour meeting to "see if its worth amending it" How about I just get my money back that I wasted with you and go to someone who actually knows how to file taxes? Im sure its not the entire company but this office is awful. AWFUL. read more

If you have a complicated return, DO NOT GO HERE! I wanted to file a return for my deceased mother, the female preparer had no idea what she was doing! There were 2 special forms that needed to be filled out for federal and state. She was unaware of them. Needless to say I got letters back from IRS AND STATE, rejecting the filing. She then refilled federal with proper form. When I called back about the state, covaid 19 prevented me from meeting her in office to get state form filled out. I asked office manager if they were working remotely and she said no! I'd have to wait until they came back to office! When!!! read more

Mari differs from other consultants I've worked with in the past, because she sincerely engages you and does an excellent job of explaining the process while she's going through it. My first H&R Block experience, and my last. The office smells faintly of sewage, or of something rotting. I had an appointment, but might as well had not, as I still waited thirty minutes for someone to help me. It took my repeatedly asking the receptionist what the hold up was before he managed to let me know that the accountant I was scheduled with was just sitting in her cubicle. I bought a condo in 2016. The tax pro who did my taxes 2017 for that year had a HUGE omission of taxable write offs from the condo escrow fees. I owed thousands due to it and she overcharged me for forms I did not need to submit due to this omission. Just incompetent! Thousands of dollars I'm told by my new H&R block tax professional. They are not knowledgeable at this midway location. Seek elsewhere. read more

I made an appointment to take my mom so she could file her income taxes at this particular H&R Block ---i have to admit --yes, it smells kind of funky in there. However, the person who helped my mom with her taxes ---she was AWESOME! A shout out to Donna Kaup. She was friendly, attentive, very knowledgeable, and had a very calm demeanor --I could tell she was happy to be there. The manager stopped by her cubicle to ask her some questions when she was helping us --and he introduced himself to us, and shook our hand...It was our first time using H&R Block here in San Diego --and I can say --without a doubt --we got great service. We also opted for the peace of mind --but this time around was $35.00 ---I say is well worth it --just in case....Next year, I will use H&R Block again... read more

I give this location 3 starts because I have been dealing with a gentleman named Bob and he has been doing my taxes for the past few years and I am extremely happy with him and his knowledge. He's been doing taxes for almost 20 years. He's a little slow with the computer but he knows his stuff. Honestly he should be running his own tax preparation company. What upsets me is the fact that H&R Block is selling this option to get a loan on your refund. It has nothing to do with your tax preparer. He just files it and then it goes to a bank and the bank decides if you can get the loan on your taxes. After he makes the application he is not involved whatsoever. I think that H&R Block is using this as a scam to make you pay more money. My refund is a decent amount yet I was denied a refund loan, after I had paid $39.99 to apply. Something told me not to ask for the loan, that it sounded to good to be true. I feel like H&R Block is taking advantage of the fact that this year people are going to have to wait longer for their refunds and have come up with a way to make extra money. Heads up to others, don't fall into this temptation. Just wait for your refund. I wish I had!! read more

These people are terrible! I came here since it's close to my house, & I've used H&R Block in years past, they've always been quick and professional and I don't mind paying since they make it easy. That is absolutely not true of this location. After waiting about 30 min to be seen, Phylis hobbled out of her chair to call my name. Once she had my documents she huffed and puffed for a few minutes asking me if I'd tried doing it myself, then she eyeballs my numbers and tells me I'm going to probably owe money, and it's going to cost around $160 to prepare my taxes, she kept telling me the price about 4 times( as if I couldn't afford it). She was so unbelievably rude, acting like I was inconveniencing her, as if me coming into her office prepared to spend money to have someone complete my return so that I wouldn't have to deal with the hassle was inconvenient for her. Needless to say I took my documents and left, since she clearly didn't feel like doing her job. I then attempted to do it myself using their software and had some problems, when I called the office to voice my frustration about he situation the manager basically told me I could use their printer but other than that they couldn't help me. Really tho!? Thanks for nothing. These people suck Oh and Phyllis is apparently bad at math since I didn't actually owe any money, but I am indeed receiving a refund. read more

The incompetence of the "tax specialist" was astounding. Took an hour and a half to file my W-2 and 1099 form and then was charged $176 vice the $45 for the W-2. In addition to this hefty fee, they also wanted to charge me an additional $35 for them to take their payment out of my tax return. Not to mention the least amount I have ever received from my tax return. This is the first and last time ever filing my taxes with H&r block. read more

I tried H&R Block this year for my taxes which are not ez by any means...i rented out my house in l.a. and I turned in my 401k...lots of fun tax stuff. My rep John was wonderful...hired for the tax season, he is a lawyer and specialist in pensions. Except for a couple of difficulties with finding an item in the computer program, he was helpful, sweet, smart and wonderful. I ended up paying the same amount I did for a professional service last year and I also opted for the $30.00 peace of mind coverage. If there is a problem with your taxes, something they did or didn't do...they will pay the interest and penalties. Now I'm sure if there's ever a problem it will be considered "my fault" but if not...this is a great service. I was really stressed about the whole tax thing this year and they put my mind at ease. Let's face it, unless your uncle is doing your taxes and is a mastermind...how do you know how great the person your going to for the first time is? It's nice to have the peace of mind by using a reputable company. It did seem a bit expensive but I was there for 2 hours and filed lots of forms so I think it's worth it. read more

Went in for the promotion that was running on TV: 1st time customers, pay half of what you did with the previous year. Well, when I brought that up, about an hour in, they told me that that promotion had just ended (even though I saw ads still running on TV after). They ended up charging nearly double what I paid for the with my old accountant. There were a few times where the tax preparer was unsure about something and would defer to someone else and once where the whole office seemed to disagree (not a good sign in my eyes that the people working here know what they're doing). After, I have had to reply to an inquiry from the IRS and H&R Block was slow in working through that with me (though I had purchased the additional Peace-Of-Mind service/assurance). And there were a couple times where I needed to pull up copies of our tax return, which I was able to do easily enough on-line, but not get signed copies of signed copies of the e-File authorization form, since everything on-line is labeled as a copy with no signatures, and it took a long time to finally get what I needed. I will go back to my old accountant hat in hand. Nothing ventured, nothing gained I guess?? read more
