I'll concede that the Danish chocolate cake was excellent (4 or 5 stars), but the savory lunch was just so-so. The shrimp themselves were tasty, but the savory croissant wasn't very fresh, and the salad had some weird oversalted sauces and the vegetables weren't the best. read more

On my first visit, I was fighting that anxiety of not having my smartphone to take photos, because I'm silly like that. I was soon comforted because Güntherska Hovkonditoriet was so cool, I knew we would be back soon. The salmon/baked chèvre/lemon/honey salad I had on our first visit was so tasty, we came back within a week and both ordered it. The salads are pricy at 165kr. But each one comes with plenty of bread, mineral water, a coffee (normally 30kr!), and a choice of one of their fancy dressings. We loved the "herb aioli" and "garlic" dressings. I might have put the salad dressing on my bread by accident, but I can tell you it was tasty there too. Heads up, they won't let you upgrade the coffee to another drink, but nbd. Aside from salads, we tried two custards and a latte that were amazing. Atmosphere-wise, Güntherska is that old classy-casual style that's popular with fika spots. Like striped wallpaper and ornate lighting fixtures. It's also a popular "seat yourself" place. They request that you find a seat before you order. It can be tricky, but it's worth it. "What a long line" was my first thought! My second was that it moved quickly and i'm glad we waited! The cakes, pie, ice cream, coffee and teas were all really great and liked by everyone! If you have a sweet tooth... GO HERE! This place is an amazing fika spot. The location is wonderful, especially when you can sit outside in the summer next to the river. Everything inside looks homemade and delicious. Uppsala natives seem to really like coming here! (You always can tell a local favorite when there is a line going out the door.) I read a little about this place before hand, because I tend to want to know what i'm getting myself into and I was pleased with all the reviews I found about it. Their website also said that the owners have a legacy going several generations back with owning different bakeries. It seems like all the fifth generation kids work here and you've got to love supporting a local family business, right?! The only thing anyone at our table was let down by on our visit was that they didn't warm up any of the pies that we ordered! None of us wanted to try and squeeze back in through that crazy full entry doorway again to ask either, so we ate cold pie (we were seated outdoors.) So, be sure to ask for a warm up if thats what your getting! Otherwise, all I have to say is good about the place. read more

I'm personally very fond of Güntherska, their pastries are fantastic (some of them amazing), the ice cream is delicious, the coffee is fine, and their bread for take-away is really great. But there are few things holding them back from getting 5*, unfortunately. Their food is a bit so and so, nothing special but definitely not bad. Then there's the selection of pastries. While the pastries themselves are incredible, the selection never changes. There are a few kinds to choose from, but in the last 5-6 years I've been going there, the selection hasn't really changed, or been switched up, or really even subbed out for different things, not even temporarily. Given how talented they are, I just wish there'd be greater variation since I am honestly getting a little tired of the same old ones all the time. I'm not saying they should do 15 different kinds every day, but maybe switch it up every now and then, perhaps seasonally or something to that effect. Also, I'd like to add that from time to time (not always but honestly more frequently than I'd consider acceptable, maybe a couple times/month), the sweet buns have been way undercooked, some even raw in the middle. All in all I'd without a doubt say it's the best bakery/café in Uppsala, (which honestly isn't much of an achievement, though it really is good). I always recommend people to go here whenever they ask for a café. read more

They have a great choice in delicious pastries, snacks as well as in drinks (I would warmly recommend their Chai Latte with Soy milk!). I find the coffee in Sweden a little strong (because I always have 2-3 cups in the a.m.) so I usually order a cafe latte with a single shot of espresso. The double shot tastes better but makes me jittery. This cafe is my favorite (and there are lots of good cafes in Uppsala). It's old fashioned but fresh with beautiful little side rooms where you can have fika (a Swedish coffee break with friends 2x/day). You can also eat outside when it's warm enough. Lunch is great - they usually have pea soup or leek and potato soup with delicious bread, or of course you can get a yummy sandwich on good bread. The pastries are delicious but a tad sweet for my taste but they have a dazzling choice. Counter servers are kind, speak English, and are helpful. read more
