Good people are hard to find. Good guitars, sometimes more difficult. It is so refreshing to see the kind and courteous staff at guitar center guiding customers to the right purchase. Chris is a kind and very knowledgeable manager. His genuine smile is infectious. He doesn't just want to sell you something; he is there to make your musical experience a little sweeter. Nick was there finish my perfect experience with honesty and integrity with a touch of class. Emily was very helpful and deserves to be recognized for her expertise. I am a regular at Guitar Center. I have purchased multiple music instruments, sound systems, and I walk in constantly for guitar strings and accessories. This place has taken over the market in music retail. I love their guitar room. I do miss having the Musician's Friend storefront at the 210 hwy warehouse open to the public. It is the parent company to Guitar Center and items were a fraction of the price. When this was open I didn't have a lot of desire to go to guitar center to pay retail prices, but now I don't have any other options locally. I do wish Guitar Center had a little more competition to bring prices down. Even though they are great, they use this to their advantage to keep prices steep. read more

Solid and knowledgeable staff. Came in to purchase a new guitar and they were extremely helpful. They even influenced me to keep the guitar I was debating on selling (super happy about this). I only regret that the guitar I purchased wasn't to my liking after a little more playing, and I had to return it. With that, their return process was painless and just as pleasant as my purchase. They were a bit short staffed and I did have to wait for assistance both times I was in, but that seems to be normal most anyplace anymore. The service more than made I p for the wait. read more

Guitar Center has a large selection of instruments that you can get your hands on immediately. They have fair market prices and a large selection of strings and other accessories. Purchase their Monster or Mogami instrument cables and they have a life time guarantee, just bring them back if they break no questions asked. I stop by regularly. The truth is I have a love-hate relationship with this place. First I will give you the good. In one word: Toys. If you are a musician this place is full of toys. Wall to wall guitars, drums, keyboards, recording equipment, and accessories. If I had the place to myself I would spend hours in there, maybe I'd just sleep in the corner and wake up and start playing again the next morning. BUT, I'm never alone in there which brings us to the bad. The bad: The place is always full of weekend warrior Jimi Hendrix wannabes wailing on the guitars and Keith Moon back there on the drums. Jeez, it's so bad you can't even hear yourself think. The poor employees. The sad part is, even if you're really good, no one cares because: a)we're desensitized to the noise no matter what it sounds like, or b) if you're talented, you're a schmuck for showing off at your local Guitar center. The staff is usually friendly and helpful. What I like about them is they leave you ALONE and let you play. There is no better way to sell an instrument. The last thing I want is some pedantic fellow musician trying to impress me with his skill and knowledge. That being said the staff are usually very helpful and understand this. How many times can I shop at Guitar Center, and not write about them on Yelp? Alot of my income goes to this store. Drumsticks, guitars, guitar strings, picks, music books, drumsets...you get the idea. Yes, Guitar Center is commercial. But, this is Independence, and I'm not near Big Dude's. So, I value Guitar Center. I thrive on Guitar Center. When I am lazy, they can change my guitar strings. When I loose my pick, I can quickly go and get more. They have a nice selection of music books, and manuscript paper. They have a drum area. They have stage lights, amps, keyboards, guitars across the wall. I love the classical guitar room. How cool is that? You go into an enclosed room, with a nice wooden interior, and all the classical guitars are lined up to the walls. There are benches in the middle of the room, to test the guitars. I think it's fun to go in there and play the guitars. The employees are super. They've given my son picks, when he didn't have one, to play (or test play) the electric guitars. You can test the drums, as well. The staff is knowledgeable, cause they are musicians. They have clinics, there, as well. Sales all the time. I went in there, today, for a capo for my guitar. Next time I'm going in there, for a better guitar case. The store is there, and I intend to keep them in business. read more

I like guitar center. This location seems to have a larger staff so of you need assistance you are not standing around like the OP location. The selection is great with both instruments and accessories. I do think the sheet music, instruction selection is kind of small though. The employees are very patient, knowledgeable, and helpful, especially when dealing with younger aspiring musicians. I generally order accessories online, but when in a pinch, or looking for equipment, guitar center is a great option. The large staff can cause being asked no fewer than 6 times if you need assistance when you enter. read more

Justin & The Staff, has done it again! I needed to upgrade my gear immediately & the "Entire Independence Store" stepped up & met the challenge. What really amazes me, is that the store JUST re-opened because of the nationwide Covid-19 shutdown! I've talked to "other" stores & received nothing but attitudes, but THIS location, is NOT like that! Not only was I treated WITH respect, I also got a great IN STORE deal, on the gear that I needed. This is a decent little store when you're looking for nic nacs, recording gear, sheet music (even if you have to order it,) strings, pics, etc. Their customer service is excellent (speaking from my experience) I am a repeat customer and the only complaint about this store is I wish they haf more of a selection of instruments on their shelves. I haven't tried ordering online, or special ordering, but I want to try the more expensive brands (because you get what you pay for) and like any vehicle I would like to test drive before buying. I would love to see 7 string acoustic guitars, Guild brand, and my favorite TZ5 from taylor on the floor. read more

Stood around for 30 min waiting on help to pick out my sons guitar. Then we had to get on google to see if we was buying a decent guitar because of no help. Then we went to front counter and asked for advice on a tuner and the guy just said oh they are over there in that isle. Horrible help. The Good: - You can satisfy a variety of musical tastes here if you play multiple instruments - Location (closer to home than Big Dude's or Explorer's Percussion) - Good selection of low end instruments for Christmas shopping - Good selection of records (Christmas shopping again) - Good sales deals - Good selection of drum sticks and guitar strings - The sales associate was friendly and not condescending with every simple question - I wasn't accosted on my way out so someone could see the receipt for my two arms load of stuff I just purchased The Bad: - Some guitars are unreachable and require a sales associate to help - Spent 30 minutes in the acoustic guitar room without being helped - Poor selection for high end cymbals - Poor selection for high end drums The Ugly: - Sales associate (that I had to hunt down to ask a question) said if anyone asks we were being helped...but then stayed at the cash register when we went back to the acoustic guitar room - Sales associate suggested a Big Baby Taylor can be grown into more than a full size acoustic - Sales associate ran entire purchase without applying coupons...had to credit everything and re-run transaction - Sales associate said Jimi Hendrix was a lefty but played right handed Overall this Guitar Center isn't a terrible place (I prefer the Overland Park store for my GC purchases). We got a great deal on some gifts and while I may have disagreed with some of the things the sales guy said, he was friendly and felt bad for having to rerun the entire transaction. I arrived and it took about 15 minutes for someone to ask me if I needed anything. (It was empty, and about eight people were working.) Once I got their attention, I asked them if I could try out a pedal, and it took them another 15 minutes to grab it from the display case and connect it. Once they plugged it in, they stared at me and walked away. After playing it for a few minutes, I decided I'd buy it despite their terrible customer service. Also, I'd been looking for this particular pedal everywhere and couldn't find it. Then, I was at the cashier's desk for 20 minutes waiting for someone to sell me a pedal that had taken me weeks to find. This is the worst GC I've ever been to, which is saying something. read more

I signed my son up for guitar lessons. He was only able to go once due to work and school. I called to cancel the lessons and get a refund on the lessons he had not used. I was told they could not give me a refund. I asked why since they were taking money for services that were not rendered. He said because it was our responsibility to make the lessons. read more

My first visit and I was impressed. I took an old guitar in for new strings and to my surprise the tech, named Paul, went right to work. He also notice a place on the neck needed to be rebuilt. Last year as I was a beginner guitarist who had just barely learned smoke on the water I had no idea what I needed/didn't need. The second I walked in a man whom I no longer remembered approached and helped me find everything that I needed and made sure that my guitar was perfect for me. At the end of the visit I ended up walking away a few dollars over budget. I've went back ever since for browsing, amps, strings, and tips. Everyone there is nice and willing to help and I never feel ashamed when I hit a wrong note. read more

As a working musician, it seriously pisses me off to go into a music store and have an experience as such any given time I have to go visit: Greeted 10% of the time, 90% of employees are uneducated on products and instruments carried in store, had an awful exchange and purchase experience (we had a cable that needed exchanged and leftover Guitar Center gift cards) - the employee we dealt with was obviously new, I will give him that but for the arguments between the employees and ourselves about policies and promotional items we have never, ever had a problem with in the past; I will have to say, it was just a typical, poor visit to GC as usual. I know several GC employees personally and this makes me sad to type this. Please stop shopping corporate ladies and gentlemen and if you're serious about music and need actual educated, music loving folks visit stores like Big Dude's Music City, Bentley's Guitars, KC Music, Guitar Syndicate and Guitar Dock etc. read more

I first started coming here in high school, when I needed new mallets or sticks for drumline. I will be the first to admit I have no idea how to play drum set it's a little intimidating trying to find a specific pair of sticks, but the staff always helped me find what I needed. So when my boyfriend wanted a guitar, we decided to come here. The staff was amazingly helpful. I don't remember the name of the guy who helped us because this was a while ago, but he helped us choose a guitar that was good for beginners, showed my boyfriend a few pointers, and made us feel really good about making such a big purchase. read more

Absolutely horrible experience. I am from KC, but live out of the country. I could not find the bridge I needed here in Russia so I ordered it for pickup when I came to KC for vacation. It was supposed to arrive before I did, but it wasn't there. I was told it would be there in a couple days, but when I came back they still didn't have it. After several minutes on the phone the associate promised me it would arrive before I left town a few days later. Of course, when I arrived to pick up the part it wasn't in and a different associate told me he had no idea when it might arrive, but was nice enough to give me a store in German that would deliver to Russia. I then went to the German store website and they don't deliver anywhere outside of Germany. This store and its staff are absolutely horrendous. Not only did they lie time and again, they were often rude on the phone and I waited long periods of time for help in store. Spend your time and money elsewhere. You will happy you did. read more
