I visited to get some essentials to return to my hotel nearby. The opening hours are in line with the rest of the mall, as of October 2024, they're open until 9 pm Monday to Saturday and closed on Sunday. The store is large, but the layout just seems to make sense, so I didn't struggle to find what I was looking for, the language barrier caused the only issues, but I managed to sort everything out using the translate app on my phone. The store seemed fairly modern through the aisles; prices were no more expensive than anywhere else in Spain, although many items seemed to be priced much higher than I'd expect to pay back home in the UK. The checkout area could use a little extra work, though. The quality of the fresh fruit and meat looked very good, which is something I find so appealing in Europe, although I was unable to make the most of it on my trip. 4*

Went there in 2019 and it was terrific! Wandered around for four hours (Thought they might kick me…read moreout). A lot like Target.. same orange plastic carts, good prices and very close to the same signage, but many things we don't have in the US. Bought ALL the interdental tooth brushes they had. My dentist loved that. Had to order more in 2021 for 5 times the price. Going back again this fall.

Prior to my visit to Barcelona, I did some research on the best supermarkets for affordable…read moregrocery items. I'd heard about €10 cups of yogurt (something like that) & wanted to make sure I DIDN'T end up at these supermarkets. Our host did warn me that shopping at Mercadona would be "tricky". I wasn't sure what he meant until I went there myself. Prior to Mercadona, every supermarket I'd been to in the Americas & Asia had more or less been the same in terms of structure/system. At Mercadona - at least the 1 I went to, can't remember anymore which 1 it was - I noticed customers queueing up at the cashiers near the entrance with their merchandise, but the merchandise was nowhere to be found. Hehe. So I followed this guy to the elevator, & the elevator took us to the second floor. That's where the merchandise was. As I lined up to pay for my purchases, 1 of the workers asked me something (in Catalan). I said I didn't speak the language, & he asked me if my car was parked in the basement. I said no, & he directed me towards the line where I should be paying for my stuff. So I take it some Mercadonas are structured this way, I guess that's just their own system of organization. Mercadona did happen to have everything I needed, & offered them at good, affordable prices. I'd be happy to do my grocery shopping here again, next time I'm in Barcelona.

I kept butter in our mini fridge so we could pack butter sandwiches when we hiked around and didn't want to stop for food (also made good late night snacks with anchovy stuffed olives.) I bought Marcona almonds here for souvenirs- because they were better than the other Marconas I had tried. I also bought lots of other things to take home. Such fun to bring home food souvenirs! I am also a fan of Vichy Catalan- sparking water- which I could buy here in big bottles. Everything was delicious and was a good price. We used the little green plastic carts. If you want to use a metal grocery cart you must put a euro in to get it "loose"- and when you put it back you get your euro back. We ran into the same system in Utrecht. It must cut down on shopping cart theft. This store also has household cleaning items, makeup- pretty much anything you need. I highly recommend it.

When you walk in it has that mixture of smells that you know you're absolutely repulsed by and at the same time thrilled to smell. You know everything in there is fresh; the fruit is fresh, the fish is fresh, the vegetables are diverse and look just picked, and the cheese is amazing. The charcuterie is like a fantasy! This market even has plants for sale as well as flowers and a few additional outlying products. When you walk up to a stall, it's not guaranteed that you're going to get a smile or a happy, "How are you?" But it is guaranteed that you will get good service. Selling the product is the name of the game here. I fully believe that if you are ever in barcelona and you come by this market you should absolutely stop in and see what it's all about. It's one of those rare places that you will be extremely glad that you saw and you'll think about later in life even if you don't buy anything, it's worth a look.

Unlike Boqueria, there aren't that many vendors selling cooked foods/tapas/snacks. Instead, it seemed more like a place where locals did their food shopping. We picked up some strawberries, so this is a good spot to pick up some fresh fruit. There's also a supermarket downstairs. They sell flowers and plants out front, and while I definitely didn't need any flowers, it was still nice to just look at them. If you're staying nearby and want to experience some local vibes, you should check it out. Otherwise, it's probably not worth going out of your way for if you're not looking to buy groceries. Note - they're closed Sundays.
