    This week's delivery.
    Emily N.

Just got my first delivery from Guerrilla Organics and had a chance to meet Martha. Oh my goodness!! The produce is abundant and beautiful: watermelon, collards, tomatoes, summer squash, broccoli, beets, grapefruit, pluot, nectarines, little potatoes and a head of lettuce. All in one box. I'm normally not home, so Martha had even spritzed inside the box to help it all beat the heat. I'm already a huge fan. Great value, kind service and yummy eats.

I rarely write a review... But I am doing it now because my husband's recent comment reminds my appreciation toward to Guerrilla Organics. I am (as a freelance architect) always at/back home earlier than my husband, so I have been "the food and fridge manager" forever. Last Tuesday, my husband felt sick and head home early. He managed to find the box securely hidden in a bush at our building's front-yard, and he was so amazed by the beautiful abundant box : 1 bunch of kale 3 bunches of bok choy 3 big tomatoes, 1 basket of baby tomatoes 1 jicama 2 onions 3 peaches 2 pearls 3 corns 1 yellow bell pepper 1 basket of strawberries 1 grapefruit 1 cucumber He excitedly told me again and again (almost forgot that he was having flu) as the products are so very fresh and abundant. Martha also intentionally put the box under shade, added extra leaves to cover the items to keep them well moisturized. I told him those facts many times but never got his much attention. He has not got to see and open the box for a while. So there are 2 tips: 1/ Do not keep the joy of opening the box to yourself, share to double that joy :) :) 2/ Do not talk to get your partner's attention, show it instead. We have been getting the service for 1 year and really love the way they take care of everything: from meticulous choice for super fresh products, well-balanced (They are great cooks I guess) to informative recipes; from customizing box based on our favorites to details of how items sit nicely all together in a box. We have never had any problem with schedule or invoice. Martha printed invoices for the first boxes then I prefer paperless and she is great on both email & phone. We never expect them to run their business as CEOs of a high-tech company. But we are delighted to know Mark and Martha who really put their souls into their works!

2nd, box and I couldn't be happier. My criteria was lots and fruit and she delivered. Also the cutest...squash..? :)

No root, leaf, or berry will go uneaten. Especially the berries. We've been enjoying this delicious fresh bounty for over 5 years. Everything is amazing. The veggies are always perfect. Best I've ever had. Sweet, ripe, crispy, deliciousness. I even got my parents to sign up. I want to give a fair assessment: After 5+ years, we've received the occasional fruit that is disappointing - Cara Cara oranges are the best oranges I've ever tasted, but the strawberries picked at full ripeness sometimes only have a day or two left before spoiling, and stone-fruit like peaches, nectarines, or plums are occasionally be less juicy or sweet, probably depending on the weather that year. We still eat it all, even the kale, and the abundance of zucchini that arrives each summer. But our most difficult item has always been the beets. I love them, but my household thinks beets taste like dirt. I've tried dozens of different preparations, even my wife's grandmother's polish chocolate beet cake recipe, but to no avail. I had reverted to giving beets away to friends and neighbors because I couldn't eat them all myself. But no longer! Bring on the beets! (Lettuce Turnip the Beet!) I have a new trick up my sleeve: Beet Kvass - and I can drink it all day. Sooooo easy to make. In short: Raw, unpeeled, chopped beets go in a salt water brine, and get left in a warm dark place for about a week or two until the juice is funky, healthy, and delicious. Second stage fermentation (put the juice in a flip-top bottle) is optional and enables carbonation. Delicious! (Posting because I'm overdue for an update, but everything I said in my previous review still stands.)

Cole Valley was really beautiful on a crisp November night with all the holiday lights already up and looking festive. I had already paid for my food so I was very surprised when I approached the tent and they not only handed me a cup of hot apple cider but had me spin a wheel to 'win a prize'. Now, this is not one of those 'you won the chance to win - now give us your email' kind of wins....this was a handmade wheel where every single place the dial could land on won a prize. The woman in front of me won a bottle of fancy olive oil and she laughed because her husband won the same - so now they have olive oil up the wazoo but that's OK 'cause it's expensive and very high quality stuff, ha! It was very generous of Luke's to give that away! And I won a pound of coffee! In short, everyone who came to pick up their Thanksgiving order tonight was a winner - they came away with a very nice gift as well as a cup of hot cider. Luke's didn't need to do that - they already had my money for the food so I was very impressed. Thank you and Happy Thanksgiving.

In addition, they never upped their delivery fee during the pandemic, and those who deliver are gracious and professional. I really like this grocery store. The homemade cranberry sauce during the holidays is worth the extra trip and hunt for a parking space, and you'll never make your own again. Yes, there is a 'but,' and that is their website, which is never up to date and some items are mislabeled, although the latter issue is not very common. This has been going on for some time and I am loathe to criticize them, but really feel I must. My grocery habits are changing because I can never count on what I ordered being available and therefore the dinner menu is unknowable (Moroccan meatballs, Acme rustic baguette, to name but two), so I stick to what's been available most of the time. I also totally realize this is a first-world problem, but if I were the owner, I'd like to know my business was suffering. Otherwise, don't change a thing.

We liked that there wasn't even a glitch when the craziness happened with covid-19, we just got our deliveries as usual. In fact, because our delivery spot closed for the quarantine, we volunteered to have our front porch as a drop off location. It was excellent. In mid-July 2024, they made an announcement that they were shifting their focus to prepared foods with an option for a preset produce box.I missed it. One day, our veggies just never showed up. I called, texted, emailed. None of the contact info was active and their website went down. I was sad & a little worried. It was just weird how everything stopped all at once. I somehow managed to figure out what happened and tracked them down. If you still want a produce box, they still deliver. Here is the new website: https://csa.farmigo.com/join/farmhousecafe

I ended up prepaying for the month of May as their April was apparently booked? Anyway. They have a pretty slick website to select produce and other items, if you don't want just a pre-made farm box like some other companies do. Just a word to the wise (who is not me): be sure to read the website for their policies. They offer no refunds, you can't truly cancel in the sense that the month you prepaid will not be reimbursed, and the biggest gripe I have is that it's on a "credit" instead of dollar system, so you don't truly know how much money you're paying for a specific item until you get past your pre-set credits (different amounts based on the size of your box). The quality of the produce itself was good, albeit smaller amounts than I've been getting at other local farms (I found other places during the month I was delayed from joining here). My other word of caution is to ensure that you know all the policies around your delivery, its time, and any quirks there. The delivery location I used ended up closing on my delivery day, so the produce was hidden behind bushes. I had no idea until it was too late and my produce was inedible. Inedible produce was neither credited nor refunded. By now, I had decided to cancel anyway, but ended up "eating" (so to speak) the cost of my ruined produce and the following week's. So, that's $56 I won't see again. Anyway, just make sure to inform yourself before committing.

There are still repeats (like so many favas and beets and spinach lol) but it's better than it was initially. They are an organic farm and it shows - ants in the box, that kind of thing. Very rustic produce - requires a good scrub and not always the prettiest but a lot of it is what I've coined "ugly delicious". Grocery stores (and restaurants) optimize for looks so the stuff in the box can look less than exciting when you get it in some cases. Strawberries that aren't plump and juicy, the tiniest peaches I've ever seen, favas that have some bruises, that kind of thing. But when you use it, the flavors are usually great. A pleasant surprise is some boxes have unexpected extras. Not sure if it is an accident but I'll take it- this week it was broccolini. Quantities are also quite good and they give you storage tips which also helps you figure out what to use first. I think it's probably somewhere between 4 and 5 stars for me- there have been some misses and some of the produce isn't always in great shape as others have noted. I find myself cooking and eating more fruits and vegetables and just being more creative in the kitchen so I consider that a win too. -- I am relatively new to CSAs and I've gotten a few boxes from Eatwell so far. I wanted to write this review as I wasn't sure what to expect or if it'd be worth it and most reviews are a little older so I hope it's useful. The good: - for $32, it's on the average to lower end of boxes I found in the Bay Area . Not an amazing deal for what you get but I think it's a pretty good price - easy to manage: you have to prepay for 4 boxes minimum so it is a commitment but you can skip a week if needed (for example I was out of town 1 week and did this on their website with no issue) and can do it every week or every 2 weeks depending on what works for you - they list their boxes plus some instructions at https://www.eatwell.com/thisweeksbox. I found this useful to refer to although sometimes their estimates on how long things would last seemed off (usually under what I found online in other places so either things are not fresh when you get them and they account for that or their estimates are just wrong, unclear) - quantities are generally pretty good. Not so much it is overwhelming but most things were enough for multiple meals depending on how many you are cooking for - I appreciated you got some citrus so there was fruit and not just veggies What could be improved: - I understand seasonality but my boxes were largely identical week over week. I looked at their past boxes too and while they do vary with the seasons, there are a ton of repeats. I did see some stuff varying and did at times get stuff I hadn't gotten before. I they could stagger or rotate a bit it might be nice. Even within a box, I found mine to have a ton of leafy greens for example and would have liked to see different types of vegetables a bit more - the quality was good but it wasn't exceptional. I have had a good amount of farm fresh produce even though I'm new to CSAs and sometimes they really make blow you away with how good things can be. All the stuff in the boxes plus the add ons were solid but nothing that was extraordinary so far. A few things I hoped would be amazing and were good but not especially noteworthy included the eggs, the avocados, the bok choy, lemons (some of those are add ons). To be fair though, some of the items which didn't look beautiful like the strawberries were actually really tasty and I think this is because grocery stores (as opposed to straight from the farm) optimize for looks over taste so here you do get the more "pure" flavorful items I did make some lovely meals from my boxes and it pushed me to try and cook things I wouldn't normally use so that was cool. Overall, a solid experience and the things I mentioned make it 4 stars from me.

I used to be able to get some nice basil at a really good price. Haven't seen any lately but hopefully I will. Anyways good place to be on Thursdays in the FiDi.

Since I take the bus into work, I had never thought about shopping for produce during my lunch…read morehour. But now that I'm trying to get a little more plant-based, I have a little more motivation these days, plus I have this neat canvas bag I got for free from the Halal Guys at 53rd and 6th in Manhattan. So now I can carry produce and compete with all those elderly Chinese women with their flimsy pink bags. Oh yes, that last Chinese eggplant is MINE, old lady! I actually come here for the produce I never see at Safeway or even Whole Foods like Romanesco zucchini. Y'know, the big gray-green ones with the prominent ribbing and nutty taste. No inappropriate jokes please. I also come here to get at least a couple of bunches of Chinese long beans and those silky-firm white peaches. I have to say I have no problem filling up my Halal Guys bag with fresh goodies because the vendors here always have quality produce (see my photo gallery). It's worth coming just for the free samples but expect to get an elbow in the face from the more aggressive cheapskates. Nothing is ever free, is it? The market fits snugly into the ground floor of the Crocker Galleria every Thursday from 11AM to 3PM (plus Tuesdays during the summer). Come early if you want your pick of the freshest produce, but get your stinking hands off my Romanesco zucchini. That's mine!
