I checked their online store, the prices are higher than at Lowes' racks. I have to think twice prior driving down there.

Ask the Community - Gubler Orchids

I purchased a nepenthes hybrid from Lowe's. I was wondering what it was? Do you grow a specific plant?

Hi Eric! We usually grow the Nepenthes Alata variety but we have recently tested the Nepenthes Sanguinea that are more red. If your Nepenthes is green it is the Alata and if… Read more

I was told the blossom of the 'Holly Spirit' is an orchid. If so do you carry them?

The 'Holly Spirit' is an Orchid. Gubler's does not carry those.

In addition to the orchids, we were especially entertained by the vanilla vine and the venus fly trap.

Straightaway, his MO is the antithesis of transactional; it's more zen, quietly high-minded, if you will. A community shaping healthy ecosystems come way before commerce. If you're lucky, you meet Mike. If time allows maybe you get to know him: the little boy he's a caretaker to. The Roadrunner Mike shares his breakfast with. The down-on-their-luck types he's given shelter to. Perhaps someone might've referenced his Saturday radio program. (Mike won't, given his humility.) Or, his Wednesday assistant happens to gift you half a dozen brown and green eggs from the hen who roams the yard. Then it begins to dawn what an honest-to-goodness treasure we have. That is if you get it. Apparently half the Yelp posters don't. Just like our very environs, Mike shouldn't bend to your needs. An issue cited by a couple reviewers--the scattershot hours Mike keeps; "the gate always closed"--is a nonstarter. That owes itself to a 60-something who's forever hustling; taking care of people. Hauling down to San Diego, or up to the Central Valley for increasingly harder-to-find healthy trees. Locals know: When immersing in a desert landscape, patience, being mindful, not to mention showing respect for surroundings allows the beauty to emerge. The payoff comes your way. Without doubt, the same can be said of Mike and Unique.

This is for the folks who like a treasure hunt, maybe the folks who love thrift stores and vintage cars, and see beauty in diversity. Yep, it's a little bit messy, but staffing shortages abound everywhere and here is no exception. We used a gift certificate to pick out a few apple trees and a bunch of sages and other things, which all looked a bit rough around the edges because of the season. Once they got settled in at home they're all thriving, and one sage has even re-bloomed way ahead of schedule. I'm so glad we visited, it was such a treat to see this little oasis!

Moonridge Garden and Gift Shop managed to pull that off in under a minute. During a recent visit up the hill to Big Bear, I decided to look around at some plant shops. This one appeared to be the most well-reviewed in the area. The shop was easy to find, and there was free parking available. Those two things are what is keeping me from giving a one star review here. I could see parking being tricky during higher-tourist times, though, so please be aware of that. I didn't actually make it inside the shop because immediately upon exiting my car, a man (who I assume was working there) had left the shop and walked up the driveway towards my vehicle and seemed to be on his way to knock on my window and ask me what I was doing in the parking lot. He was oddly close to my vehicle and had to walk a ways to get there...and honestly...that kind of approach felt really out of place for a shop like this to me. You'd expect that kind of approach when pulling into a car repair shop or something of that nature, but it felt pushy and strange for a retail establishment like this. I had been in the parking lot for maybe 30 seconds at this point, so it wasn't as if I was camped out in their lot. I was pulling my things together and preparing to get out in a timely fashion. When I got out, the man who'd approached greeted me, but also seemed suspicious of me being there? Or upset that I was there? I instantly felt as if I didn't belong. He started providing me with directions to the gift shop (which is apparently in a different location?), even though I was there to look at plants. When I asked about the plants, he again seemed suspicious of me wanting to shop at plants at a plant store. The whole thing was so uncomfortable that I ended up turning and leaving without going inside. In the year 2025, I really do have much higher standards for how businesses treat the human beings who visit their establishments. This place just wasn't doing it. Hard pass. Do not recommend.

But they never answered their phone so we went to this Moonridge Nursery place. We bought two trees and they planted them for us but the whole transaction and installation was a bit hokey so I don't think we will ever go back. No, we won't. One tree wasn't set right the ugly side (with not so nice looking branches) faced the cabin. How stupid not to think about how to place a tree in a hole strategically. We will bring the next trees/plants we need from down the hill and plant them ourselves. You might want to do that also.
