I joined Farrell's (FXB) Columbus, IN in January 2020 for a 10 week fitness challenge. My physical…read morefitness had declined after my 12 year old nephew was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma in 2019. (He's 17 and thriving now!). A coworker invited me to do the 10 week challenge, and I'm so grateful that she did. I had been a member of other gyms in the past, and was so intimidated to be joining a new gym in such bad shape. I was greeted with smiling faces, people wanting to know my name and lots of support from everyone there (not just the owners and instructors). I've been to multiple class times and have found each one to be welcoming! When the pandemic shut the world down, Farrell's adapted by selling exercise band kits as they began to offer virtual training options. I continued on as a fit member through the virtual trainings and for some time after being able to go back in person. Life presented some obstacles in late 2021-early 2022 and I fell off track. Luckily for me, Farrell's offered a recharge program as a way for former fit members to come back in the fall of 2022. I needed to start a serious training program to be ready to hike the Grand Canyon in March of 2023, so I signed up and got back on track. I don't love getting up at 4:30am to get to the 6am class on my clinic work days, but I do love how I feel after (and I do love seeing all of the members of my 6am fit family on those mornings). My long term fitness goal at 55 is functional independence (going to the restroom on my own) for as many years as I can. My short term fitness goals include hiking and backpacking. I love the kickboxing classes, but found I NEEDED the strength training classes. Balance and strength have been of paramount importance in the completion of many bucket list hikes I've done in the last 2 years, including Angel's Landing in Zion, Grand Canyon (to the bottom and out), Mt LeConte and Mt Cammerer in Smoky Mountains, Grandfather's Mountain in NC, Tea House hike in Banff, Iceburg Lake and Highline in Glacier, and Half Dome in Yosemite, I've also started backpacking, doing 30-35 miles in a weekend trip. My favorite quote comes from a Farrell's shirt I bought stating "I want to see what happens if I don't give up". I encourage you to join a 10 week challenge to see what's possible, because I guarantee that you are worth the money, the time and the effort!

The owner, however, did not take responsibility for his employees or his own actions, did not apologize, made excuses, and blamed me for the problems I experienced. A fellow student reached out to me saying the delay was due to providing safety for all six students with one instructor. There were two students with one instructor and one person training to be an instructor. She suggested that I should have considered hiring a private lesson with an instructor. Funny, I just needed to go through skills, she needed the extra time. My review stays the same, find a different dive company for SCUBA lessons. Try MPH Water Sports or Diver's Supply Indy.

My family enjoyed diving at the Cayman Islands in August of 2017. We dove in clear water,…read moreencountered a variety of beautiful underwater wildlife, fed stingrays by hand and explored shipwrecks. Unfortunately, the great parts of the trip were offset when we learned the disappointing truth about the business practice of Bottoms Up. We felt disappointed and heartbroken to discover the friendly Bottoms Up Company employs deception for profit. Relevant details involving expenses, especially in the context of our diving trip, were ambiguous and intentionally concealed. Rather than a fair division of expenses, as would be expected and as we were led to believe, they calculated our cost to pay for the total expenses of the trip, including the total expenses of four other divers as well. Answers to detailed questions about expenses were intentionally avoided or redirected. Ultimately, based on first-hand experience, we realized Bottoms Up proudly celebrates high profit margins generated from unprincipled and unethical business practices. Through well-practiced manipulation and swindling, there's no doubt trusting students and customers like ourselves have been, and likely continue to be, unwittingly faked and well-fleeced of their finances. Initially, like others, we were encouraged with praise and recognition, we were reassured with warmth and affection by the friendly staff and head instructor, Mike Ellis. Clearly, the gentleman has many qualities, including a curious "special quality" which, in private conversation with me and in his own words, he described as being "morally flexible." I will carry special, fond memories of the time I spent with my family and the truly great diving. Unfortunately, while the particulars of the trip could have certainly been better, I carry a less than favorable memory of the Bottoms Up Company.
