I started out working with Jonathan Holtz, who was excellent and always took the time to answer my questions and explain what was happening. Over the course of a case this long I had a few different attorneys represent me as things progressed through litigation, with Scott Bonavita ultimately handling the case toward the end. Scott was great to work with and I really appreciated how straightforward he was with me. He gave me his actual opinion about the case, the risks of continuing toward trial, and when he thought it made sense to settle rather than just telling me what I wanted to hear. Glen Levine also personally stepped in at different points when I needed help, which meant a lot and wasn't something I expected from one of the firm's partners. In the end, they got me a settlement I was very happy with, and then continued working for me by negotiating my outstanding medical bills and liens down significantly, which made a big difference in what I actually walked away with. However, after I paid their substantial pre-suit flat fee, it immediately became an "autopilot" kind of interaction with Darren. His responses were terse and rarely with enough explanation or context. We never saw any of his communications to the person who was going at us. Ultimately, having no transparency, it amounted to him asking us "How much are you willing to pay?" Given his impersonal brevity, his near unwillingness to explain to us anything being communicated, and his seeming refusal to explain anything about his own thought process -- his communication was subpar in a situation where we needed more clarity. I looked for his recommendations. I asked him many questions. He never gave any explanations beyond three words, and only one recommendation which **I accepted** only to then be told, "The guy isn't backing down, so...." Darren didn't show us anything he was doing to help us understand what Heitner Legal was doing on our behalf. And his communication was the pits. He didn't even explain to us the details of the settlement in plain English. He didn't offer an explanation at all. I don't need a memorandum, but a friendly "OK here's what you're signing essentially...." would have been nice. I would equate Heitner Legal to finding yourself paying high prices at a grocery store where you end up having to bag your own groceries at the same time. EDIT: I have since had a conversation with Darren about the initial version of this review. He has asserted all of the work he did behind the scenes. I maintain being left in the dark during these processes as the client is not the best place to be and does not inspire confidence in the resolution of the settlement.
