How does this bookstore have no reviews yet?…read more The State Cinema is one great package. A cinema with harder-to-find films, a lovely cafe AND a great bookshop. I probably shouldn't allocate points for 'proximity to other cool stuff', but you have to admit that a bookshop hugging a cinema and cafe is pretty A+. Having said that, this bookstore is a little small and cramped, an affliction of many a Hobart bookstore - whether you find it quaint or oppressive is probably down to your tastes and how large a bag you're attempting to carry through the aisles. Like many of the other Hobart bookstores it manages to maintain a fair spread of general books while finding a point of difference: this bookstore specialises, appropriately, in nonfiction books on the entertainment (film and music) industry. Here you'll find the best local selection of biographies, 'art of', and 'making of' books, rivalled only by Ellison Hawker. If you're a movie buff you'll find plenty to enjoy. Beyond this, the densely-packed little shop does offer books across all the usual genres: fiction, poetry, travel, cooking, etc etc. Their clasification system can be a head-scratcher - topics are definitely grouped in some way, but you'll edge from table to shelf to bookcase for a while before you find the section you're looking for. Alternately, you could just ask the friendly staff, if you're not as antisocial as I. :) I can't comment personally on the service but I've seen them helping people out and chatting at length; looks good to me. Prices are moderate to exxy, but then big glossy books of this kind generally are when bought in brick-and-mortar shops. You'll find some quality books on sale here and there. Bonus points for a pretty decent selection of books on writing, a topic which some Hobart bookstores completely overlook, ironically. Is that ironic? I don't even know anymore.

That came up when I came in wearing my Springboks (Rugby) hat, explaining that my Nephew lives there and it was great way of not being taken as an American at first. What followed was a nice American politics back-and-forth, with one other customer joining in. Talking with the locals is almost always a fun learning experience for me. I settled on a nice Tasmania map, and received a nice Tasmanian Tiger print as a bonus. Both were wrapped up nicely for the eventual long journey home. There were more expensive choices and additional selections, and I was happy to get out of there without picking out more.

Next thing, a gentleman appeared in the side alley and invited us into his shop. We were both amazed and fascinated by the antique maps and photographs on display and mused over them asking questions. After half an hour or so we got to know the owner, Gerald, whose personality, humour and knowledge will stay with us forever. Just listening to him was mesmorising as he informed us of the history of the maps he has on display. Of course we found the 'one' that we had to purchase. Gerald is also a professional framer. He went above and beyond (we had to fly back to Sydney the next morning) by not only framing and packaging our purchase, but ended up driving us to Hobart Airport so that we didn't miss our flight. This was truly an experience that my husband will talk about in years to come when visitors to our home reflect on the beautiful artwork we purchased from this historical store. Thank you so much Gerald. We will definitely meet up with you again when we next visit Hobart.

The Car park is always crammed to the hilt and poor parking abounds at the best of times. There's precisely zero available spots in the area facing the bus mall, with cars of all sizes in a predatory orbit awaiting the first spot to open up. Inside, it's two stories with the usual clothing shops, phone/repair shops, nail salons, and massage spaces, and the aforementioned Kmart/Big W on one end and Coles AND Woolies at the other end. It's long overdue for a facelift.

Sure, it's also full of a whole bunch of specialty shops (lots of clothes) and overpriced cafes, just like every other shopping centre? Yes. Plenty of parking available (and a great affordable carwash in the multi-level carpark around the back), this is a bright and mostly clean complex but is absolutely riddled with Hobogans. Enter at your own peril, and leave as soon as you're done. No dawdling.
