Obviously this bakery has been here for a lot longer than my time wandering, it's just that clearly I've never seen it before. I was a little disappointed after I went in as there didn't seem to be much on the shelves. That said, this may be an extremely good sign if they've almost sold all their wares by 12 midday... I opted for a square scone-like thing, which caused much hilarity with the lady behind the counter as neither she nor I could remember what they were called! Whatever the heck it was, it was really, really good. Lovely and doughy on the inside, with a thin sugar-sprinkled crust. So good was it, I had to go back almost immediately for a chocolate cookie - which was also good, though not quite the same standard as the square-shaped, scone-like... thing. I spent all of £1 for the two of them, which pleased me greatly. So, I've only given this 3 stars as, although the goods were delicious, quite frankly, there wasn't enough of them! What it is to be popular, eh?

Found on St. Stephens road opposite the Dogpool Hotel, Raven's provides the people of Selly Oak with everything from freshly made bread and buns to all the sweet treats you can imagine. My family have been regular customers for many years and my grandmother would always insist on a freshly made loaf as opposed to supermarket bought bread. There is something very quaint about this small independent baker and with its yellow shop front it brings a bit of brightness to what can otherwise be a fairly drab road. The owners are good people and you will often see them in the early hours preparing to make bread and take deliveries, they seem very committed and the results are there for all to see in the excellent goods they produce.

Having the day off I popped in when they'd just opened and was pleased to see a steady stream of people popping in to pick up bread - something I didn't expect for a mid-week lunchtime in the suburbs. The bread isn't as cheap at the stuff in the supermarket, but it's handmade and delicious. I picked up some focaccia, which was glorious, and also some of their lunch offering which was a decent portion for the price. I hear there can be queues at weekends and they often run out early so it's worth heading down sooner rather than later.

A presence on Stirchley High Street since 2012, it's only since moving closer to the area that I have stumbled across this place (thanks to the Brum food scene social media). Fresh loaves of sourdough, rye, sweet buns, and changeable lunches everyday - the salt beef if heaven - bring something special to the area. Add in their popular cookery school and 'takeover' evenings - last night it was a Chicken Shop takeover - and this community bakery serves more than just hungry tums...it is good for the soul too!

Since years , I…read morehave been coming here , from a tiny year 7 to a , only slightly taller , year 13 student to get away from the stress of school and just indulge. As soon as you enter , you are encased with the warm and heady smell of baked bread, which is also put on display in a variety of shapes (TURTLES!) And the cosy interior just makes you want to sit there for hours upon end. I ordered: the basket of , of course, the fresh bread ranging from slices of fig , to sourdough , complete with Bonne maman jam, a fresh fruit tart and a hot chocolate. The breads were crispy and delightful, the tart would be of Mary Berry standard and the hot chocolate was rich and delicious. How can this not be 5*! I can't wait to go again!

The first time we waited for 20 minutes and we went unnoticed, even as we walked out of the door. The second time we waited 10 minutes before being noticed by a French waitress, who came to take our order. She couldn't understand what Cafe Latte was. After the help of some nearby multi-linguists the waitress realised that we wanted 'cafe lait'. The cafe wasn't latte. It wasn't even lait. Or late. It never materialised at all. Maison Mayci is the kind of place that kept yummy mummies hang out after dropping their kids off at King Heath Primary School. Women with not only money in their pockets and time on their hands, so that may be why quick service isn't a priority here. I glance at the specials board whenever I pass and there are some tasty looking quiches with interesting food combinations on offer that change on a daily basis. If you have time to while away and you aren't that bothered about quick service, this charming looking French cafe has some original dishes that you won't find elsewhere.
