You immediately have to pass the desk and go through a dark hallway of lockers and creepy men are standing around making noises at you. Then you enter a big room with men on cots and bunk bed cots, it's like a bomb went off and it's dirty and nasty. They guy who serves the crappy food screams at people if they talk while he's serving the food, he has a real power issue as well as most of the staff. The women's sleep area that I was in is just as bad, if you get the bottom bunk it's so low to the ground you literally have to get on your hands and knees in order to get out of it. It breeds for bully mentality because people don't have a lot of power left but those bullies take advantage of the lights and heater advantages if they tend to be control freaks in normal life. The shit thing is that when you call one of two "hubs" which you have to in order to get into a shelter, and if you say that you don't want to stay at We Hope you get penalized and you can't get into a shelter for 14 days! So you either live in hell or you live on the streets. The other 3 shelters in the country are way nicer and the employees actually care unlike this place. Like I said they really need to tear it down and remodel and fire these current employees and hire decent people that has empathy towards people having the worst time in their lives.

hubby surprised me with a cheese making 101 class at collective roots this weekend. didn't know…read morethat this place existed in east palo alto and must admit was a little wary of the location, but once we got there it felt like we were at someone's private residence. there is a beautiful garden with herbs, vegetables, fruit trees, chicken coop with hens and roosters, and beehives! we made 5 different yogurts and cheeses in our short 3 hour class: -yogurt - went through the steps of yogurt making using culture from store bought yogurt -greek yogurt/yogurt cheese - let the yogurt drain and have a richer yogurt -cultured butter - yogurt culture in fresh butter -ricotta - super easy to make and enjoy -mozzarella - fresh mozzarella in 1 hour the class was enjoyable, we got to meet lots of new people and learned a lot about local produce and cheese making. the best part was using the fruits, herbs, and honey right from the grounds of collective roots! nothing like fresh, local produce. great experience...can't wait for cheese making 102!

I worked at CAR from 1991 through 1998, as both a Home Companion and as a Residential Counselor. I…read moreenjoyed working with the clients. The CAR administrative staff, several of which still work at AbilityPath in 2020, needs more honesty and professionalism: I was fired for doing my job! One of the clients-- who normally had a nice disposition-- began showing signs of aggression and so I documented this. All my co-workers confirmed with me that the client was aggressive during their shifts, but they did not see a problem with it because all my co-workers were somewhat new and never saw him when he was nicely behaved. And so his aggressive behavior was "normal" to them and therefore they didn't see anything 'out of the ordinary' about it and tended not write about it in the staff log. One day in late 1998, the then current CAR group home manager-- a young guy who had only been working for a few weeks and whom I only met once-- received a call about an allegation that I had "hit a client" which shook me to the core: never did I ever hit a client (or any other human being for that matter). CAR then told me that the client in question only became aggressive around me, which is 100% bullsh*t! The client, who had a developmental disability and was very low functioning, had a tendency to agreed with everything anyone told him. If you told him "Lynda [or whoever] sexually assaulted you, right?" the client would have said "Yes!" Of course, I never played those kinds of games with him but someone obviously did and I was fired for absolutely no reason. Or rather I was fired for doing a great job of documenting his behavior and someone--- a parent or an admin staff-- wanted me gone. It was very upsetting and traumatic being accused of something I didn't do. Further, the kangaroo court at CAR was so bogus and incompetent that they never brought in the cops or Adult Protective Services, two agencies that would have (I believe) saw through CAR's unprofessional investigation. If someone was indeed hurting the client, CAR should have done a better investigation and found out who did it and not scapegoated an innocent, loyal staff. I am no longer angry at CAR, just disappointed in their lack of ethics and professionalism. CAR shamed and humiliated me. I recall the CAR group home I worked at had six different managers in a 5 year period, and some of which were very immature, rude, and inexperienced. One manager even lived in the group home, which I found bizarre and highly unprofessional. All totaled, I have worked with people with developmental disabilities for 29 years for a variety of agencies. CARs false allegation about me hitting a client was the only time I was ever accused of such an allegation. I honestly feel that the CAR admin staff did not care about the Truth-- they just wanted to protect their ass by scapegoating and firing me. Shame on CAR. Perhaps the parent of the client felt vindicated. Now is the time for transparency, ethics, and high standards. Thank you for allowing me to share this painful experience with you. One more thing: CAR told me the reason I was fired was because of Licensing. Licensing told me the reason I was fired was because of CAR! Crazy, huh?
