Reconsidered Goods - "Unacceptableee!!"

I absolutely love that this place even exists. I feel like it even puts Greensboro on the map in a…read moreunique way in the world of thrift shopping. As it is, this city already has a substantial supply of thrift stores. However, Reconsidered Goods does for the Three Rs what I have never seen any other thrift store do well to date. They likely came into existence as a way to cater to the low-budget art student crowd. They seem to have realized that there is potential value in everything. Literally. From the things you would expect to find for sale anywhere down to the things that are only just shy of trash, depending on your personal criteria. I particularly love the bucket loads of stationery and stickers, and the literal shelf loads of assorted random boxes. Your donations and your purchases all give back to the community in some way. They even have an entire maker space style workshop making up the back half of the building where I assume they also do trainings and workshops. And even their prices are so reasonable that a little bit of pocket change can go a long way. The only complaint I can even come up with is that they aren't open long enough.

We can't wait for our next trip!

There's been a lot of talk about Trosa Thrift store around town lately. I've seen it all over…read moresocial media so a friend and I decided to check it out on a Friday afternoon. Trosa is located on Peters Creek Hwy in the Food Lion strip center at the Clemmonsville exit. It's easy to get to and there's plenty of parking which I love. Right inside the door is their whole furniture section, they have tons of tables, chairs, dressers , etc. they even have a whole section of office specific furniture. The prices are very reasonable. This would be a furniture flippers paradise. Towards the back they have shelves of everything from pillows to whole sets of dishes, sports equipment and the most medical mobility equipment I've ever seen anywhere. I'd say, if you are in need of a walker, a bath seat or portable toilet for someone look here because they probably have it at a fraction of the cost it would be to purchase new or rent. The clothing is grouped all together but they aren't keeping it organized as well as it needs to be. All different sizes were mixed in together and I quickly got frustrated and gave up. Both of us had found an item in the kitchen area we wanted so we headed to check out. The workers were very friendly as well. I'll definitely be checking out Trosa regularly in the future. Trosa supports substance abuse treatment. If you want to donate to them, they offer pick up for larger items or you can bring your items to their donation drop off around the back of the store. Just follow the signs.

Lots of clean and trendy furniture as well as some leather couches, glass dining room tables, chairs, etc. There was also a room full of sinks (some with pedestals or bases), cabinets, plenty of boxes of flooring, screws, nails, etc. There were several appliances there as well including microwaves and some ranges. All in great condition. If you wanted picture frames, sponges, lamps, new sheets in boxes, curtain rods nik nacks....it's there. Don't judge until you've been there. Granted, it's not like a department store where everything is brand new, but if you're looking for a great place to browse for a great deal...this is the place. I brought my mother (total Ms Judgment!) and she was taken aback as to how different this place was from the older one on Lawndale. They still have all their color coded discounts to look for as well. So, if you want to bring your mother some where (with no judgement), consider giving this place a whirl. Oh....the bathrooms are exceptionally clean!

There has always been a special place in my heart for organizations or businesses that engage,…read morementor and hire people who have struggled in their lives or needed someone to give them a helping hand. When I was the Executive Director of the Community Theatre of Greensboro, we worked very closely with Delancey Street. This organization works closely with drug addicted men and helped them with their recovery. As a way to support the organization and put a few dollars in their pocket, Delancey Street offered moving services. We hired them whenever possible for moving gigs, but the greatest pleasure of all was giving them a block of tickets to attend one of our productions. After what they had been through personally, socially, financially and emotionally, I could always feel their great sense of pride and Joy when all these guys showed up at the theater dressed in a nice pair of slacks and shirt, feeling like they belonged. Feeling like they too can enjoy the better things in life. Feeling empowered and hopeful. Many of them had never seen a play or musical before, but you could see the absolute joy and awe on all their faces as they took in what was happening on the stage. Delancey Street is an organization worth supporting! I remember when I was in Kenya, part of my tour was spending a day or two at the East African Mission Orphanage. A marvelous couple from Australia had started a small community of orphans, and over the years have built an incredible refuge and home for so many children in East Africa who are homeless. There they get an education, housing, food, friendship and love. In turn, the children and teenagers welcome tourists, spend quality time with them and also have chores and responsibilities as part of the orphanage community. This is an extraordinary organization worth supporting! So it's no wonder that as I kept passing by the Malachi House II Hand Car Wash on Wendover avenue / Burlington Road every Monday and Wednesday on my way back and forth to Elon to teach, I wondered what kind of car wash this was. Turns out it's connected to the Malachi House II, a faith based drug rehabilitation program and facility that works with men for full recovery from drug addiction and counsels and guides them to stay drug free, finish their education, find a place to live and a job and live an enriching and meaningful life. Many of them work at this car wash to support the program and put a few dollars in their own pocket. So last week I decided to give it a shot and I was so glad I did. Only $15! The guys are very friendly and thorough. You have to be prepared to give yourself a little time because this is not your typical machine drive through or the guys that wipe you down for 2 minutes. These guys want to make it right and to take their time. Conveniently located on East Wendover/ Burlington Road, you can't miss it. Once they took over my car, I sat down on the side to see how this all works. I noticed several men in folding chairs enjoying chatting and visiting along with the workers. Seemed like they were all friends which was nice to see. Everything is done by hand. You're not driving through some mechanical shower with rubberized soapy strips slapping against the side of your car. Your car is vacuumed and rinsed and soaked and washed and dried all by hand! That's the way I like it! You have the option to tip the guys personally, but there were so many of them that I decided to leave a nice tip in the jar inside and let them split later. It is good to consider a tip when you go here because I have a feeling that goes directly to the guys working As I sat there and watched these gentlemen working hard and struggling and aspiring to be drug-free and live a more "normal life", I could not help but think about people in my world who complain about their current situation or their struggles. With what's happening in the world today and knowing what these men at Malachi House II are going through, if you have a job, your bills are paid, you're in good health and you can find toilet paper at the grocery store, you are in great shape! Thank God and be grateful that your world is not driven by when and how you are going to get your drug fix today. And when you have a few dollars in your pocket to donate, think about Malachi House II, or better yet, head to their hand car wash on Wendover Avenue/ Burlington Road when your car is dirty, and not only get a great car wash, but feel good about where that money goes for both the washing and the tip for those who serviced you! Count your blessings!!

After joining OCH, I fell in love with the school and the care the teachers provide my kids. OCH is a smaller center and the teacher to student ratios are small which really allows the teachers to give the kids the love and attention they need throughout the day to feel welcome and regulated. OCH was recently re-certified as a 5 star center which goes beyond what I thought a daycare could provide! I love to see the creative way they teach the kids the weekly topics vs. worksheets or teacher curated crafts. They learn through play and the teachers work on social emotional learning and helping the kids learn how to regulate when they are upset. Additionally, it is a co-op daycare, meaning the parents have active involvement in the success of the school. We moved to the area in 2023, and I realized almost all of our friends are parents from the daycare. Listening to other parents talk yesterday about not having "mom friends," I mentioned all my mom friends are from our daycare and my friend replied: "that's because your daycare encourages parents to get to know each other! Mine is just drop him off, see you later." She's right - we have monthly get togethers with the other parents and kids and it's a great way to make new parent friends, which can be so hard these days. All of that is to say, we love OCH and I wouldn't consider sending my kids elsewhere.
