It's like a big square with a path. It overlooks the cemetery, so even if the cemetery is closed, you can still see it.

Established in 1638, this is one of the oldest cemeteries in all of New England. If you are into historic sites, this should be on your do not miss list. The old headstones and the history within this little cemetery on a hill is fascinating. For some cinematic history, both "Hocus Pocus" and "The Good Son" had scenes within their movies filmed here. It also has a nice little gazebo to sit in to take in the wonderful view of the coast.

The lack of clear paths and the age of the stones and trees create bumps and uneven ground. If you're into history or love a bit of spooky charm, or are looking to visit all the Hocus Pocus filming locations, this spot is absolutely worth a visit. It's both hauntingly pretty and weirdly peaceful.

Located on Tremont Street, along the Freedom Trail, is the Granary Burying Ground. Established in…read more1660, it is the third oldest cemetery in Boston. There are approximately 2,345 gravestones and tombs, and it is estimated that over 5,000 people are buried there. There are many noteworthy people buried at the Granary Burying Ground including Samuel Adams, John Hancock, and Robert Treat Paine, who signed the Declaration of Independence; Paul Revere; John Phillips, the first mayor of Boston; the five victims of the Boston Massacre; and Benjamin Franklin's parents, whose tomb is commemorated by a 25 foot obelisk. There is also the grave of Mary Goose, a woman who was incorrectly thought to be Mother Goose of nursery rhyme fame. The Granary Burying Ground was a beautiful cemetery and we enjoyed walking around, looking at the interesting grave markers. While entrance to the cemetery is free, at one of the entrances is a man handing out sturdy booklets he made with a map of the cemetery and information on the notable burials that you return after your visit, and inside the cover of the booklet is a pocket where you can leave a donation, which I thought was ingenious -- he is providing a service (information about the cemetery) for free, there is no pressure to donate, and he probably makes a tidy little sum from donations -- I was certainly happy to leave a couple of dollars. It is definitely the prettiest, greenest, most walk worthy cemetery I've ever seen! We stopped by the visitor center where a staff recommended a particular way to walk to the Washington tower in the middle and to see Isabella Gardner's grave by Auburn lake. We appreciated the windy, cloudy day with glimpses of sun for our adventure today. Several tombstones were guarded by statues of a favorite family dog. Many were clearly family plots. We climbed up the many winding stairs of the Washington tower for a breathtaking 360 degree panoramic view of Boston and of the greenery below. We'll be back! We only spent an hour here today but could've easily stayed 2-3 just exploring. Highly recommend!

(I walked from campus in 20 minutes.) When you walk in, pop into the main building to use hr restroom and pick up maps of the cemetery. You'll learn the cemetery is the first one in the country intentionally designed as a garden/arboretum too. The map will guide you to monuments and memorials and notable burial sites to abolitionists like Charles Sumner and poets like Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. If it's open in the warmer months, climb the Washington Monument for a view of the city. It's closed during the winter, but the hill it's on still offers unobstructed views.

There is so much history buried here and there are little information plaques all around the cemetery to read up on people and the little fun bits of trivia. This is the final resting place for Cotton Mather as well as other well-known figures of American history. It's got a sense of serenity and calmness. If you're doing the Boston Freedom Trail, it's an easy stop along the way.

A very large…read moregraveyard Harmony Grove is a very large and cool cemetery. Opened it 1840, it is built on very uneven terrain and has some steep hills, great old trees and lots and lots of different types of gravestones and memorials. I'm not sure how many acres the cemetery has but it certainly is vast. A cool Gothic revival chapel built in 1905 is at the entrance and then the small roads just sort of meander over the hills and through the trees. Lot of huge, medium and small sized monuments. Some quite modest and others very impressive and not doubt expensive. Some famous people that I never heard of are buried here as well as a whole lot of not so famous and ordinary folks. Some obelisks, morbid looking angels, a Civil War monument and even a couple of old cannon are scattered about. Some of the gravestones are literally hanging on the edge of small cliffs. One of the very coolest and most interesting graveyards I have been to. You can quite literally spend hours walking around here. A cemetery that is a fascinating place to visit even if you don't know any of the residents.

It holds…read morethe grave site of the Chief Justice during the Salem Witch Trials, Judge William Stoughton, and is in the middle of an insanely busy intersection in the Boston neighborhood of Dorchester. It's a fairly small burying ground but nice to walk around. There are so many ancient headstones here - I even found one from 1688!! Very much worth a visit if you're at all into history or the Salem Witch Trials or even just aesthetically pleasing cemeteries. The gate is always kept locked due to the very busy urban location. You have to call the Mount Auburn Cemetery in advance to schedule a time to visit at 617-635-7361. They'll give you the code to the lock. I took Boston's excellent public transportation to get here so I can't speak to the parking situation- but it looked to be difficult - mostly street parking in the area and limited spaces. But it was easy to get here on public transport from Boston's main core - one train, no transfers and then a bus and there's a stop right out front.
