The beauty of the property is not adequately seen from the front or even the back, but from the beach below the cliff. We had an oceanfront room with a balcony. We were actually directly above the pool and a great view of it, too. The room was spacious although the bedspread and decor appears to have been from the 70s. We spent a lot of time at the pool bar and esplanade bar and want to give a big shout out to Vinny & Paulo, both of whom treated us with excellent hospitality daily. The buffet breakfast was a welcome morning fuel source for our cliff hikes and hours on the beaches. It included an array of fruits, vegetables, meats & cheeses and hot items catered to the British. The milk for cereal was warm and the Delta coffee machine was a disgrace to Portuguese coffee, however. A friendly older Portuguese man sanitized every table after guests were finished. Speaking of coffee... There are no coffee pots in the rooms and none in the lobby. Breakfast isn't served until 8AM, so if you want coffee before then, you have to go into Old Town to get a cup. There's an excellent pastelaria, Barhon, just 5 minutes away. One annoying thing about the hotel is access to the property before 8AM. The esplanade entrance is below the lobby. You cannot enter or exit the property from the esplanade until 8AM. Why on earth they have the exit locked until 8AM is beyond me. I'm also not sure what safety implications this has in the event of an emergency.

I booked through American Express, and there was no mention of any additional charge for a baby--especially since we didn't request an extra bed. However, the front desk initially said there would be a $35 fee, but they ended up charging $90 without a clear explanation. It felt like they were making up prices on the spot. Although this is supposed to be a 5-star hotel, there was no iron provided, and the hangers were of such poor quality that they almost ruined my silk dress. Overall, it was not a pleasant experience. One more important note: My nephew's shoes were stolen while we were at the hotel's private beach. Please be extra cautious with your belongings. Keep your door locked at all times, and I would advise against requesting housekeeping during your stay.

This is a great hotel, location is only 30ish minutes from the airport…read more The hotel is next to a very sunny beach and has its own pools. The rooms are fresh and well maintained. The food in the main restaurant is good and a wide range of food which changes daily. If you are having dinner prepare yourself to the weird way to order and receiving drinks, from our experience it normally involved three or four staff members.

They have a Michelin 2 star restaurant, so expect to see suits and gowns if you do decide to dine there. (as a note--they have a discounted dinner rate for hotel customers, so definitely check it out!) We were greeted with a glass of champagne, and headed to our beautiful room. It had a gorgeous bathroom complete with a large hot tub. The bedroom doors opened onto a spacious private patio with a table, chairs, and two lounge areas. The view of the beach was breathtaking. The amenities were incredible--turndown service, TV with access to Netflix and youtube, Molton Brown toiletries. The buffet and made to order breakfast in the morning was superb and included with our package. The omelettes were divine, as were the multigrain croissants. Don't miss the mimosa bar--complete with various types of juice, ranging from beet/pear to mixed berry. Everything tasted so fresh! We also received phenomenal service during our breakfast, which we enjoyed on breakfast patio, with a beautiful view of the property and beach. Cannot wait to return and hopefully spend more time there!!
