I love making things with my hands; I love the sense of accomplishment it gives me. My grandmother…read moretook up upholstery in her 70's and made some beautiful pieces, one of which I inherited. The fabric on the piece isn't really my style and I decided that if it was going to be re-done, I wanted to be the one to do it. There aren't many places to learn upholstery. I am lucky to live a few blocks from the shop; my classmates weren't so lucky, they all lived at least 20 miles away. I wasn't sure what to expect with the beginner's class, so it's worth noting that in the beginner class you most likely won't work on an actual piece of furniture.* What you will do is complete four projects that give you the skills to move on to actual furniture. The class is very hands on, you will thread a machine and start sewing in your first class. There are no prerequisites for this class; half of us hadn't used a sewing machine before. Owning a garment machine, there were a few things that took getting used on upholstery machines. There are two instructors; Jeff, the owner, taught my class and one of his staff taught the other. I can't speak to the other teacher's style, but Jeff is very laid back and a firm believer of learning by doing. Jeff is very generous with his time, knowledge, tools and materials; many students don't finish all of the projects in the allotted class time, but you're welcome to come back and finish after your session is complete (provided there's room). You're always your harshest critic, but I was so flattered when the manfriend thought my final project was something I had bought. I really loved this class and can't wait to start the intermediate class. The intermediate is like an independent study, you bring the piece you want to work on. If you've meandered by and seen the work in the window on Lincoln, those are student pieces. * One project is a bar stool cover. If you've got a piece to work on, you can use it. TIP: There's a lot of close work in the class and it's easy to get into a groove. Wear comfortable clothes you wouldn't mind getting dirty and bring your glasses, water and a snack.

I just took the "Beginners' Upholstery Class" with Jeff Kraut and LOVED it!…read more The class covers upholstery techniques that can be applied to automotive upholstery, furniture upholstery, and bag making. It is taught on industrial sewing machines (no previous sewing experience necessary). I already knew basic sewing and I definitely picked up lots of new tricks/techniques. Some of the topics we covered: * setting up the machines and basic sewing. * quilted stitching on vinyl (like on the back of a car seat or stuffed chair) * adding piping trim * zipper installation and sewing a small case * stapling construction and making a panel (like recovering a chair seat or a car side panel) * beginning pattern making and making a seat cushion Projects might vary a little from class to class. I've posted photos of my work. The class was Mon & Wed, 7-9pm for 5 weeks. It's located just down the street from Trader Joe's on Lincoln. Easy parking & near the El. You can get more info from Jeff at canvasboss@yahoo.com. I'm looking forward to the advanced class!

I contacted him this day due to not receiving any information about my FAFSA (whether I would receive aid or not.) He replied that it would be early May before they would have my FAFSA results. I replied again asking if he was the right person to be contacting for this information or if it needed to be someone else. I got no response. On May 7th, 2026, (early May) I contacted him again to ask how I would receive the information about my FAFSA. He replied that it would now be the end of May before they knew any information about FAFSA, and said it was due to the "big beautiful bill." I continued to wait, while being enrolled in what I knew were my last two courses before I gained my bachelors degree. JUNE 2nd, I had heard nothing still and contacted him again. No response. June 24th I receive a threatening email from the school financial department about my balance. It stated to reply to the email. I replied. NO RESPONSE. June 25th I receive another threatening email again from the financial department. I reply AGAIN, NO RESPONSE. June 26th I attempted to contact the employee that assisted me with being admitted to chamberlain, she had always been responsive. NO RESPONSE from her either. June 30th, I receive another threatening email from the financial department. (I HAVE NOW FINISHED AND GRADUATED AT THIS POINT.) I again reply to the email address it specifically told me to reply to inside the email. It was returned "message failure / mailer Damon." I send another email but at this point I am fed up. I call a 1800 for chamberlain. When a woman gets on the phone she tells me that she can't see my FAFSA at all and now it's too late for me to do anything about it. I said IVE BEEN TRYING TO HANDLE THIS SINCE APRIL 22ND!!!! No cares given. She forwarded my complaint to someone else whom I have not spoken with yet. When I returned the call I spoke with another employee who could not help and only wanted to forward me to a different department. I sat on hold 34 minutes, left a voicemail, AND HAVE STILL NOT HAVE NOT BEEN CONTACTED BACK.

Not reviewing his music (which was fantastic), but the venue. The room we were in was like a black box theater. The room was fairly small and intimate. It was open seating and when we arrived it was pretty full. We were very fortunate that there were two seats open in the third row. The room is acoustically sound (pun intended)... Seriously, being small, they really don't need to amplify the sound, even though they did have a microphone set up. As we were leaving, we got to roam the halls around the school. There were a lot of fun, vintage posters that were a lot of fun to look at. We met quite a few people who either had been students there, or were current students who had nothing but good things to say about the caliber of the educators and the Old Town School. Based on the performances we've seen there of students and faculty, I'd say we agree.

Be sure to look at the address on your ticket though as I just put "Old Town School of Folk Music" into my direction app and I landed 20 minutes away at a different place. I'd paid to park before I realized it was the building where lessons are given, not concerts. I drove across town and went into another "Old Town School of Folk Music" on Lincoln Avenue, only to be told I was still in the wrong place. Ran across the street and found my concert, up a flight of stairs, but was 25 minutes late. Prices for a concession stand Coke and a candy bar were wildly high, but I was hungry so I paid for it, plus tip. Seats were small and uncomfortable, like a school assembly hall. But again, stellar acoustics, so a really good experience overall. I'll return, but I'll be more careful with driving directions so as to arrive on time.

Today (7/25/25), an instructor from this company (who I believe is also the owner), removed the company placard from the top of the car, barreled down the middle of a parking lot lane, almost hit me purposely 3 separate times after harassing me, including backing up within a few inches of my car, brake checked me, stopped the car in an alley to block me from leaving, flipped me off with 2 hands while driving the car, and screamed the F word out the window several times--this is all with a what looked to be a young man in the passenger seat looking terrified, no older than 18 years old. It's been about 30 minutes since this incident and I genuinely wondering and concerned that this instructor was intoxicated because that is not how normal people behave...again, with a teenage student driver in the passenger seat.
