The story could have ended there but we decided to stay for drinks and the owner got the chef to cook for us. I had an amazing meat pie, chips, mashed leaks, peas and Brussels sprouts. After dinner the owner came over with two cheese plates on the house. We had a couple more drinks and headed out. What could have been a bad experience for us turned into a great meal, and I gladly recommend the Woolpack Inn.

They are so focused on the no phone policy that even having mine on the table got a rant from the glass collector, when I explained I knew the rule and it wasn't in use, the reply being the manager would close the pub and send everyone home if he saw me on it. Shame.... I used to come here 3/4 times a week when it was run as a friendly place to drink.

More of a working museum than a pub, Nellies (or the White Horse Inn to allow it its unused official moniker) has been a fixture of Beverley life since 1666. Much of it looks like it hasn't changed one iota since that time, in fact if a filmmaker wanted to shoot Robin Hood inside some of the rooms the only changes the art department would have to make would be to remove the beer mats. It's wonky, dusty, dark, labyrinthine, packed with intriguing knick-knacks and even more intriguing locals. It's a listed building lit by gas mantels and cheered by several open fires; it's hard to think of a pub with more history, character and heart. That's the good news. The bad news is that a few years of injudicious care by the owning brewery means that it's very survival is unfortunately in doubt. Long hours for little pay and limited living quarters mean that there's been a high turnover of landlords and this jewel of a pub currently finds itself languishing without a permanent gaffer and no food offering up until a couple of years ago you could live for days at a time on one of the cheap doorstep sandwiches from the basic but hearty menu. It's also difficult to recommend the drinks unless you're a connoisseur of Sam Smith's - beyond stating that they're very, very cheap. The only real exception is the dizzyingly heady wheat beer, a couple of pints of which make the walls and floor seem more uneven that normal. Aside from the building what really makes Nellies stand out are the incredible locals. They queue in the morning to get in, sit bantering all day and fill the place with humour and warmth in the packed evenings. They will not let the spirit of Nellies die without a fight. This is a pub going through unnecessarily hard times but you should still visit, not for the non-existent food or bog standard beer but to experience what should be one of the most celebrated institutions in the country, just in case it disappears.

We were pleasantly surprised, the place has been recently refurbished in an attractive polo theme (liked the polo mallet curtain rails ;-) and offers a good menu at reasonable prices. The owner fitted us in (prior to another booking) despite being fully booked. Service was prompt for obvious reasons but not pressured. We had a section of meals in our party of 9 and all were happy with our choices. Fish and chips was a generous serving with minted peas with cider and interesting addition. Sunday lunch was accompanied by red white and traditional carrots that made for an interesting talking point ( the red - beetroot coloured carrots were delicious) could have done with more mash though but still very tasty. The quirky jam jar glasses and blackboard booking names places added to the overall experience. Highly recommend it!

They are very welcoming and the food has been very good, if you go on Mondays it is 2 for 1 on grills and we had 2 excellent rump steaks last time we went. It's a pity they are not busier as they really do deserve to be, the place is cosy, warm, clean and nicely decorated. It's unfortunate for them that the place has changed hands several times in the last few years and the reputation had suffered as a result. They also have a pool table, not so many pubs have now. Go on a sunny evening and sit outside by the river and watch the sunset, glorious!

My home town of York is blessed with a great selection of pubs but nothing like this. I saw lots of beautiful food being served but having already eaten was unable to try any on this occasion but certainly will next time. If real ale is your bag you MUST try this place. I would also advise a trip to the White Horse opposite which is fantastic also (in its own way).On the downside, smokers are relegated to the garden and no heating is provided out there. Many other places have taken care of this with infra red heating but it is a minor grumble.
