I am almost in tears over a slice of bread and bowl of soup. I have frequented many great harvest bakeries over the years while working in Idaho Falls and Utah. So I feel I know what is normal and what is expected. I order the cup of tomato Basil and a slice of bread, whichever is warm (my favorite being Asiago sourdough). Now when I was given the slice of bread that was paper thin I knew things were already going south. But I proceeded to order the bowl of tomato Basil, a sugar cookie, and a sandwich for my husband. Sitting down to wait for the warm foods to be prepared I started munching on the sugar cookie- or should I say "crunching" that was the driest oldest cookie I wish I didn't even bother. The Man that took my order came over to confirm the soup that I ordered so I told him the tomato basil again. And then I was promptly delivered the chicken tortilla soup. As I'm looking at the soup and then at my husband we are both confused as we were both there for the both times that I had asked for the tomato basil soup. The man seeing our confusion came over and acknowledged that he meant to give me tomato basil said he "liked the chicken tortilla soup" and then left the table. I assumed maybe to bring me what I ordered? Nope. So there I sat eating my sad paper thin slice of bread with my chicken tortilla soup. Should I have asked for a manager? Yes. But I was pretty sure I would have started crying on the spot and that wouldn't have helped anything. Normally I don't write reviews unless I have something egregious happen. Now I understand the food industry and customer service roles seeing as how I have worked in them for years. And if I was the business owner or Manager I would be upset if this was a common occurrence with my staff. read more

Amazing! This local bread shop is my to go place to have my bread. Their selections are awesome. Lunch are always delicious, my favorite is the berry bar. The employees are nice and helpful. Place is clean and bright. Always get my holiday rolls from here every year. read more

Service. No greeting when I walked in. No hello. No engagement. No service. When checking out, clerk didn't ask if I had a reward number attached. Didn't ask at all if I needed help with anything. Lots to choose from but get there early because they sell out pretty fast. I've had a sandwich there that was freshly made for me and it was very good. Bread was so fresh as were the other ingredients. Service was great and staff are very helpful and friendly. The wonderful smells that hit your nose as soon as you walk in are dangerous because I want to buy one of everything in there. The shop is clean with tables set up for eating there. My husband's go-to neighborhood sandwich shop, Great Harvest is in our regular Saturday rotation. We stop by at least once a month, picking up sandwiches, chips, cookies, a loaf (or two) of bread, soup mixes, etc. It takes a while but we don't mind waiting as usually there's just one guy busting his butt. The owners make it hard for us Saturday customers, however. Sometimes the cafe closes early, and sometimes it doesn't open at all. With Jersey Mike's and Meltz opening so close by, the owners might want to consider their sandwich customers a bit more. read more

This is the best GH that I have visited and I've been to a lot. They have a very wide variety of delicious baked goods My favorites are BT Cake, lemon bars and shortbread. Their paninis and salads are super yummy too. We love their locally sourced honey. The staff is always very friendly and helpful. The atmosphere is welcoming and there is ample seating. I can't stand this place. Overpriced junk food. When I saw them advertising themselves as best bread in boise I almost fell over. Their bread is not real bread, there is not even a single real yeast-less sourdough. Not sure if the owner has ever been to a real bakery. A trip to Europe is in need, desperately, to learn how to make real bread. These dry, over yeasted, flavorless, monotonous textured, over sugared, over processed, products are an insult to bread, cookies, cakes etc. In addition, they charge unjustifiably high prices for gluten free up charge on sandwiches that are half the size on a regular sized sandwich. read more

The service is superb and typically it takes only about four steps into the shop before one of the workers greets me and asks what I would like to sample. Today, they were cutting slices of cinnamon roll bread, which were very good. I typically order a BLT to take back to work to eat. The bacon is top-notch and they press the sandwich in a panini press. Bonus points for carrying Reisinger honey from Emmett. Some of the best honey around, also sold at Winco and the Boise Co-Op. I took off a star because of the polystyrene clamshells they pack to-go sandwiches in. In this day and age, there has to be a better packing material than something that has a half-life of 5,000 years. McDonald's quit using them years ago. read more

I am rating them highly based on being knowledgeable, customer service, and efficiency. I tried the gluten-free bread they had today which is brown rice Dakota. Maybe I should have asked if I could sample it first. It's pretty dry. That it's a grainy, nutty bread, which I like :-) I'm happy to find basically a homemade sandwich (PB&J ) for $4 because nothing else in that price range is very healthy elsewhere. I think seven or eight dollars is too much for any other ssandwich but $4 for a PB&J or $5 for a grilled cheese isn't bad. :-) read more

I used to go to this Great Harvest all the time because it was just down the street from where I worked. Their bread gets five stars (obvs) and so does their self-serve Dawson Taylor coffee. I love their generous free samples and the giant slabs of butter they set out to go with them. They also have awesome sandwiches and pastries. The only thing I don't like about this Great Harvest is the iffy customer service. I've walked in MANY times to see a ton of people behind the counter yet no one greeted me or stepped forward to ask how they could help. Yes, eventually I got the free sample and my sandwich or whatever I was ordering that day, but sometimes it took a while, even if I was the only person there. The great vibe that people talk about is, I guess, not my vibe. I personally don't like hearing the people who are making my sandwich talk amongst themselves like the customers are not there (I have heard, at various times, talk about concerts, boyfriends, and injuries). It makes it feel like everyone behind the counter is in a clique that everyone in front of the counter is not a part of. In the past year or more that I've been patronizing this place, I buy coffee every time I'm in there. And every time I buy coffee, the person behind the counter tells me, "the coffee's over there." Every. Single. Time. So maybe I don't have the most memorable face, but there were times I would be in there at least once a week and saw the same person who told me the same thing. Weird? Or are they just pro-gluten A.I. robots that are blankly spew the same lines over and over again? That said, if I'm in the area, I still stop by from time to time. Not for the stellar customer service but because the coffee and the bread are so damn good. read more

It seems impossible for this to be a chain and franchise as every single one I've been to has its own charm, and the best tastings carbs you will ever consume. Every visit comes with a free sample. But when they say sample, what they really mean is "let me give you a full serving of this item you have never tried before you order your meal". Carb loading at its finest. I was so excited to find this place by accident, my kids had a party at the clay painting place next door and I stopped to get a cup of coffee and ended up buying fresh bread too. Came back same day for lunch, I ordered the Reuben and the Turkey Pesto. When they said my order was ready there was only one sandwhich, I sat back down thinking they must still be making the second one. After a few minutes I asked if they were still making the sandwhich, all three counter workers had no idea what I was talking about. Took them several more minutes to find my original ticket and make the missing sandwich. By the time I got home the first sandwich was completely soggy and gross. Which is a shame cause they looked like they would have been so good if I had not had to wait an extra 20 minutes for the second sandwich. read more

This sandwich shop/bakery is INCREDIBLE. The staff immediately greeted us so kindly, and were patient when we needed a few minutes to decide. We ordered 2 cookies, one for me, and one for my young daughter, and the woman helping us was so kind as to ask her which shape she wanted most, as well as offering to switch it out when she dropped her bag and broke her cookie. We declined, as a broken cookie tastes as good as a whole, but I thought that was incredibly kind. Moving through the line we were offered free bread, and the slices they give are generous! There is a butter dish and honey available to dress the bread. We tried the pumpkin chocolate chip and the Challah. Both were amazing, and we went home with the Challah. When I expressed how nice it was of them to do the free samples, she replied that generosity is something that they build their business around. My daughter enjoyed her turkey and cheese sandwich and I really did like the Rueben, although I probably would choose something different for next time. Their bread, however, cannot be beat. You can actually get a loaf of bread that was made with nature's ingredients and the way bread it supposed to be made, WITHOUT all the processed chemicals and preservatives. I buy two to three loaves a week and I am never let down by the quality. Now let's talk staff. These are the friendliest and most accommodating people I have encountered in a long time. This is hands down my favorite bakery in town. They are a chain, but not in the traditional sense. Touted as a freedom franchise, owners of Great Harvest franchise are given creative freedom with their bakeries...so, no two Great Harvest Bakeries are quite the same. Business aside...this place is the bread lovers Mecca. Their bread is fresh baked daily and in many cases whole grain. They have several types to choose from on a daily basis and then they offer either one or two special breads of the day. My favorites? Honey whole Wheat, Spinach Feta, Country White, and Cinnamon Chip. They also have dinner rolls that would deliciously compliment any holiday feast. Plus, they have a slew of sweet treats they make on a daily basis (cookies, muffins etc.). I seldom get the treats, so I cannot comment too extensively on that--but I did get their chocolate chip cookie mix a few times and good lord are those some fabulous cookies! Oh! And, they offer a sample slice of bread to every customer--take it! More often than not, it is still warm from the oven and they serve real butter with it! Just moved to Boise, but used to always go to great harvest in Oregon. It was really bizarre first visit to this location, as I felt invisible while in line. Everyone else was offered free bread samples except me, and I was considering buying some bread. When I was called up to the register, I ended up only getting a cookie and coffee, and wasn't asked about bread or anything.
