Not only: Parker's Piece has a special place in the history of modern football games, as it was here that the Cambridge Rules of 1848 were first put into practice. They were very influential in the creation of the modern rules of Association Football, drawn up in London by The Football Association in 1863. A plaque has been mounted at Parker's Piece bearing the following inscription: "Here on Parker's Piece, in the 1800s [sic], students established a common set of simple football rules emphasising skill above force, which forbade catching the ball and 'hacking'. These 'Cambridge Rules' became the defining influence on the 1863 Football Association rules." But also: Sir Jack Hobbs, second only to the Don in the list of five 'Wisden Cricketers of the Century', used to play on Parkers Piece. Apart from the sporting lore associated with the place, I also love the old gas lamp at the cross roads of the paths (erected in 1893, fact fans) which has become known as 'Reality Checkpoint' by the students. Apparently as it marks the point where the cosseted environment of the colleges ends and real life, embodied by the town proper (the life and grit of Mill Road is just opposite) begins.

It's especially good for toddlers, as it has a nice play area, a duck pond, lots of mature trees and squirrels, and in summer there are two paddling pools. When the weather is good, a very charming Italian gentleman rolls up in his equally vintage ice cream van, I remember him from when I was a kid myself! The Hall itself is now a school, but has some nice gardens around it which are good for picnicking. There's free parking and no entry fee. The toilets can be a bit gross in summer.

The Backs is a beautiful area of the University of Cambridge where the colleges' grounds span over…read morethe River Cam. It's easy to spend a whole morning walking through the paths and along the river. There is no right or single way to do it. You can enter through town and go back and forth across the bridges (where permitted as some colleges will understandably restrict public access). The greens are well-maintained, the architecture is inspiring, and the scene is breathtaking. Check out some of the gardens and sculptures, find the Mathematical Bridge at Queens College, explore the Wren Library at Trinity College (but abide by their no photography policy) and yes, even take a famous punting tour which is said to be the most charming of ways to see the picturesque backdrops. The Backs are worth a stroll, even on gloomy days as it's likely the sun will peep out briefly and distribute that perfect photo opportunity.

It takes place for the notorious Strawberry Fair, of which supports many local bands and musical acts, in addition to the sales of various goods, as well as supporting the local facilities, and is a great attraction for people of an older age group, from about 15 and older. Secondly, Midsummer Common holds the ground for the renowned Midsummer Common fair that has existed for over 500 years, enticing people from all over the UK to attend the fun and entertainment, of the rides.

A lovely place to go for a long walk or even to take the family out for a pic nic in the countryside. It will cost £2 to park your car but there are no time restrictions as such on that - you will have plenty of time to go about enjoying your day and not have to worry abou the car park cost, something quite unique for Cambridge!

This park is a real hidden gem, it's a couple of miles outside Cambridge and is a family favourite…read moreof ours all through the year. It's owned by the Cambridge Preservation Society, who do a superb job of managing this estate. Briefly, there's a Stone Age ring which once fortified a village. It now encircles a group of cottages with gardens, a barn and a pond. There's 110 acres of down, woodland, pasture and orchards to explore. It's great for foraging for nuts, fruit, fungi and mushrooms. You can see birds, foxes, deer, bats, badgers (if you're very early). They have some great educational events here through the year and it's free. The car park costs £2 but if you're skint, you can park for free in the lay-by a bit further down the A1307 or you can walk over from Magog Down, just over the road.

Everyone is always doing fun activities (ping pong, volleyball, tennis etc.) The feel of the park is so peaceful and calming. Cambridge is not really meant for the inexplicable hordes of tourists that I noticed while I was in…read moretown for work. the sidewalks are too narrow and there's only so much shoulder-checking I want to do. in order to get some peace on my morning run, I took detours through the small parks. while Christ's Pieces isn't that big, it has a lot of paths that cross over and intersect each other from various corners of the oddly-shaped park, so you can tack on mileage that way by going back and forth and around. there's also a small memorial with flowers in honor of Princess Diana, roughly in the center.

The park is well maintained and contains plenty of leafy trees and seasonal flowers, but is mostly used by crowds of pedestrians as a walk through spot.

It is possible to hire a punt from the town centre and punt all the way out here rather than driving. There are often cows wandering around the field, so beware of cowpats. Take a gazebo with you then you can have some shelter in the case of a downpour - or sunburn depending on the weather. The pub at the entrance to the meadows does fantastic food, so if a picnic seems like a lot fo work then i would definitely recommend eating here.
