Today on March 23, 2025, I walked to Grand Wines and Spirits in Groton, CT on Route 12, around 3:00pm. I walked to the back of the store to get a case of Angry Orchard and when I got to the register, the cashier, Susan rudely asked me if I was with a gentleman that she just had refused service to. I didn't enter the store with him, I didn't have any interaction with him and I didn't know him. But Susan rudely said to me " Are you with him because if you are I'm not serving you". I was taken off guard because what would give her the idea to ask me that but beside s the color of my skin. He was a black man and l'm a black woman, so in her mind I was with him. It wasn't so much the question that bothered me, it was her tone toward me and the fact that she profiled me. She was nasty and I took that question as her being a bit racist. She did not ask the white male or white female that walk in before me were they with the black gentleman she refused service, but she asked me. It's 2025 and people are still practicing their racist believes. If you are going to be in a customer position you should treat all people with dignity and respect. I will not be returning to that store ever again. read more

Most of the selection at this wine store is your average kind of wine that you can buy just about anywhere, but they do have a section of high end wines on display in the front of the store to the side. We ended up getting a few bottles from there, including a bottle of 2008 Cristal which was raved about everywhere. They don't keep the bottle in the box but instead give it to you when you get up front. Well, up front, they couldn't find the Cristal so we almost left without it and just purchased our other bottles. As we were walking to the car, they came out and said they found it, which was a great ending! There are some gems to be found in this store like the Cristal, Opus Overture, Dom Perignon, etc. I saw a couple of bottles of Chateau Lafite Rothschild as well selling for about $800. The vast majority of wines here you can buy just about anywhere it seems, but they do have some gems if you want to find them! read more

Wish we didn't have to leave even ONE star. If you don't mind dealing with rude employees then go here! We went here twice and both times were treated with rude cashiers. Won't ever go back again. Good selection but you are on your own. Staff is helpful but not very knowledgeable. None of them seemed to know what Beaujolais wine is.

More like 4.5 stars, great selection & price but what sets them apart from other stores is a bit divisive in the craft beer community. Grand Spirits offers a Beer Club e-mail list for their more elusive offerings. If you want something like Lawson's Sip 'O Sunshine or Ghandi Bot you'll get occasional e-mails & if you respond in time then they will hold you some at one of their 3 locations. Making everyone happy isn't an easy thing to do but I think their Beer Club mailing list is the most diplomatic way of making sure everyone has an equal chance at getting great beer. Not everything is crazy tough to get but I do like that they try to distribute it to everyone. Prices & selection are on par with most other craft-centric stores in the area but I am a fan of their Beer Club even when others aren't. This location in the Kohl's/Stop & Shop plaza is maybe their largest. It's definitely worth stopping in if you're in the area to peruse. Just understand some more sought after beers aren't going to hit shelves. read more

Don't let them recommend wine. I was suspicious when I had a wine tasting party, and everyone showed up with the same wines; and in comparing notes, they all came from this store chain (2 stores at that time) and were all pretty awful. When I went to a party and the same thing happened months later but with different wines, I did some delving and learned that they buy some cheap wines in bulk and need to push those sales so say that they are great. Have not had one good wine recommendation yet! Better off going with an outside recommendation. Selection and prices of merchandise are good, though. read more

The people who work here are very unprofessional, if you want to hear their employees dropping the F bomb and talking about your children as they walk out of the store then this is the place for you to visit. Great selection, of course. Very rude cashiers. Always avoid going in there except it was on the way. The women especially are curt, will give you scathingly dirty looks. New woman in there yesterday with the long nails, same thing. I fought the urge to say something to her about her whole demeanor. I also notice they're all very young. I saw no middle-aged people or seniors working in there. I will go the extra two miles to the Bridge package store where the guys greet you and are always POLITE. read more

Literally in the store for 15 minutes with a number of people. When I went to cash out I presented my Id which showed I have been legal for the last 15 years but because one of my friends didn't have her purse with her id they wouldn't let me buy the alcohol. They said if I had left my friends outside I could have purchased it. If they were that concerned about age they probably should say something when people walk in. Do they encourage teens to window shop there or something? There is one place I will never go back to. read more

I am a 45 year old woman who went to the store to purchase a bottle of vodka. The girl that worked at the check out counter had asked me my age and I told her and then she wanted to see photo I.D. I had lost my physical form of my license and then she proceed to ask me for another form of Identification. I showed her what the DMV had given me which was a paper copy of the recent picture that was taken to ensure my I.D would be in the mail asap and in the mean time to use the state issue of paper form until my replacement came in. Well the outcome was that she had denied selling me any alcohol even with all of my proof available. I have jeans older than this clerk and she refused to sell me anything even though I have been to this proprietor a dozen times. When I had contacted the DMV that same morning they told me that what they had given me was a legitimate form of I.D and that there should not have been an issue like that and to get in touch with management asap to make them aware that I had been treated disrespectfully and that should have not ever have happened. I have know idea what they are telling their staff but they are not following rules like they should be and management should retrain these individuals about what the correct rules are for the state of Connecticut.
