It has a Sunday service with monks and prayers spoken in Chinese Mandarin. Fo Guang Shan Chung Mei Temple 佛光山中美寺 is part of the International Buddhist Progress Society (IBPS). Located in Stafford, this temple sits on 89 acres of land. It officially opened in 2001. Fo Guang Shan as 佛光山 in Chinese translates to "Buddha's Light Mountain", was founded by Master Hsing Yun 星雲大師 in 1967. Fo Guang Shan is the largest monastery in Taiwan. There are over 300 branch temples worldwide. As far as I know, besides Houston, there is one in Austin and Dallas. I got a chance to try vegetarian food at Water Drop Teahouse. Prices were reasonable and food was delicious. Because most of the vegetation was damaged from a recent arctic blast. The garden was not as green as I wanted. So, I'll be back this summer. p.s. The nuns and volunteers there can give tours, help with translations and provide booklets. They have a library, rooms for study and rented out for teaching kids. They have a place for vegetarian food, too, which I heard was good (though I didn't have a chance to try it). The founding monk that created the temple in Taiwan passed away recently, so they had ceremonies for Founder Master Hsing Yun. They'll also chant for your loved ones if they pass away, you have to work with them ahead of time. One thing I do wish they did was put how long each service was expected to be; ended up taking an extra 45 minutes to go through some unexpected Q&A at the end from the founder's question lists. They have some translation services (audio in English) for services, and they do try to seat people - mostly more devout monks and acolytes in the knee height benches for prayer session. They have incense and a number of pathways outside. Services are mostly in Chinese, but they do have some parts in English and pinyin books for those who can't read Chinese. For those who are just visiting in respect (other religions) they did try to press them to follow along in the books, but I can see how people can be turned away. It'd be more interested if the books were also translated to English so you knew what was being chanted. Screens on either side have Chinese and pinyin to help with the chants. Donations were welcomed, and gift shop is open. You can also sponsor one of the many buddhas and plaques in the temple.

The facilities are clean and the monks are very kind and welcoming. Perhaps the biggest secret of them all is that they sell delicious vegetarian food here! I'm not sure if it's sold every day but I know that they definitely sell it on Sundays. There's a wide selection of Viet dishes to choose from and the prices are fair. I came on New Year's Day when they were selling their special Vegetarian noodle soup and it was some of the best I've had. Generous portion, less than $10, incredibly flavorful broth enhanced by the chili paste. I also tried some imitation meat in a sweet and savory orange sauce. Very unique flavor and something I'd definitely get again. Come here on a Sunday morning/early afternoon and expand your palette with some delicious temple food!
