I'm not really sure this particular monument was worth the hike.
The park it is located in was beautiful. The pillar is at the far end of the park opposite the main entrance. The Gotlar Sütun or Column of the Goths may be one of the oldest Roman monuments in Istanbul.
It is assumed from the Latin inscription on the pedestal that it was created to commemorate a Roman victory against the Goths, but unclear as to the actual date. It's just odd that such an ancient piece of history is secluded in a park so unpresumptuous and quiet.
As with everything historical in Istanbul, there's a near obelisk with the limit history info on it in three languages. read more
