She had reasons why, but it took quite a few months before she finally took an x-ray that showed a bone hanging low causing the pain. So then she had to go back in and screw the bone up where it belonged. She wasn't happy about it I felt like it was my fault. She turned defensive. A few years later I started having pain on top of my foot. Arthritis had gotten so bad I needed to think about fusing my foot. My feet were hurting so bad from the arthritis I wore sandals with a lot of very spongy support. They were sandals that had a lot of straps and they made it easier to walk. I went back to Dr O'Rourke to see her and she was furious at me for wearing the sandals. That was all she could focus on. So I decided not to see her anymore. Then she retired. And also sent me a copy of a letter she wrote to put in my file. It was very vindictive,, said I don't heal well, I am a bad patient and I wore sandals. She mentioned the straps but still it was very bad. . I was shocked that she took the time to write such a letter. Very unprofessional. But I thought well, she is retiring and that is a good thing. This is not acceptable in a Doctors office. Next, xray and no other thing, just leave an wait and see if ankle gets better. No mention of PT or if not better in xyz weeks, maybe an MRI or something. No just come back if you are still in pain. Not sure why, oh yes so I can be billed for that next referral to the MRI or something. I really hate that waste of time. I've had an issue with my achilles for some time now and Dr. Kuzel and his staff have been amazing in my recovery. Everyone is so friendly and accommodating that it's actually a pleasure to come in for follow up appointments. He's done a wonderful job in hiring people who have the perfect mix of professionalism, bedside manner and people skills. I had an emergency that happened on a day when they were in surgery most of the day. Rather then send me away or reschedule me, they stayed until almost 7pm to take care of me. I can't tell you how far that goes with me. You just don't see that anymore. And to top it off, they were all pleasant and genuinely concerned with my issue. Hopefully I'll never have to go back once my issue is resolved but if I or anyone I know needs their services, theyll be the ones I turn to.

The short end of the backstory: I'm thirty-five years old and have suffered from various knee and ankle ailments for the better part of my adult years. I was advised to take up a cardio regimen to battle migraines last year by my GP, and decided that I'd make a go at doing some fun-running as a means to keep my motivation up: things started off well, but--as always--hit the wall within a year and a handful of 5K events, as my Achilles began to burn with pain every time I took a step. No amount of rest or downtime seemed to do anything to improve the injury, so I opted to hop-step down the street to Dr. Kuzel's practice, as it's within the neighborhood. Now, the middle bit: I've had diagnoses on my feet before, and they usually come down to a poorly-healed broken bone from my teenage years and genetically lame ankles. I've worn orthotics since 2002, and--even with that--have just managed to basically "break even" in terms of my overall movement and footprint. I told Dr. Kuzel all of this during our first meeting, and he sat there as rapt as if I were recounting my adventures in the China Sea, or something: not a fakey "nod and hmm"-type response, but real, serious listening. Shortly thereafter, the man went right to work. He ran a sonogram (!) of each foot, broke down the inflammation that he was seeing, and noted--just by touch and sight--that my feet bend way too far inward whenever I take a step. This was all new information to me, as previous podiatrists had focused on the old damage and ankle area, rather than the movement of the foot itself: with that in mind, Dr. Kuzel suggested that I get a new pair of orthotics that would encourage a "lockstep" motion, and even offered to have new casts made of my old, busted-up pair for more casual purposes (and for free, I might add). Now, a month and a half later, I'm pulling between fifteen and seventeen miles a week, and doing so without ANY pain. I'd dust off the chestnut about reclaiming my teenage stride, but facts maintain that I probably never ran THAT far (At least intentionally) as a kid, and certainly not in any time in the last fifteen years. I've got three 5Ks lined up for August and feel like I might actually push for a 10K or two before the weather drops in October. I was just hoping to regain a basic half-speed jog with Dr. Kuzel's help, but he's managed to basically put a new set of tires on me. The man knows his feet, and I mean that in the most gracious and respectful way possible. Five stars, easy.
