Used bikes shouldn't be $200 as that's ridiculous. A new bike would cost that much. A few of the furniture is outdated and not in a vintage way, but at least from the 80s. Some of it looks like pieces from popular furniture stores and they were unscathed. I did see a familiar piece of furniture that is up to date and since all furniture is currently 50% off, they are reasonably priced to sell. The staff are talkers so beware if you thinking you can casually browse without being spoken to. Staff members seem to like to follow you around just to spark up a conversation with you which can be annoying. It happened to my friend and I three times. Twice by one staff member who was strongly trying to convince us to buy an article of furniture and another time by guy who followed us onto the second layer of the store. I even noticed that did it to other consumers as well. Thank GOD I had the actual AirPods in my ears, because the case is replaceable. When I went back to look for it, I couldn't find it anywhere. The next morning, I used the Find My app and saw the case was at a middle school. I kept tracking it throughout the day, and eventually it showed up here, at The Salvation Army, after school hours. When I arrived, I told the young man at the door that my AirPod case was pinging inside the building. He was so sweet and so helpful. I didn't get his name, but he took my phone and walked around the facility, pinging the AirPods to locate them. He found them, brought them to me, and even apologized for the inconvenience, when he was the one doing me a huge favor. I don't know his name, he appeared to be Chinese, but I truly appreciate him for helping me and finding my case. He was extremely helpful and kind. To me, he went above and beyond, and that was appreciated.

Asked if I could take some home rather than throw them away and they said no. Really wanted to dumpster dive later. But fast forward like 20 years and here I am again volunteering. This time in their repackage center. This was not like last time when we had to sort through donations. It was all assembly line packaging care boxes. They had a ton of volunteers there from different organizations on a Saturday. We were supposed to have a free breakfast, but there was none. So that kinda sucked. But they have a food court where you can buy stuff. They also have lockers for you to store things in. You are supposed to wear long pants or knee length shorts but I saw lots of folks with shorter shorts. Also closed toe shoes are supposedly required and this means no crocs specifically. but they didn't do inspections or say anything to anyone. Also they didn't ask for the minor waiver forms at check in. I think the warehouse wasn't air conditioned. Just one gigantic ceiling fan where we were so it started getting kind of hot. Lots of kids volunteering. Lots of church groups and schools. I think 6 years and above can volunteer.

I'm normally a neutral-color dresser but some of the clothes encourage me to step out of my comfort zone into some louder designs. Additionally, the walls are all lined with non-clothing items for sale -- books, movies, glassware, water bottles, and more. I don't think I've ever come a cross a thrift store with this much versatility. Out of the Closet is serious about HIV/AIDS advocacy and they prove it by putting their money where their mouth is. Like many other thrift stores in Montrose, you can expect marked up (but still fair) prices compared to the larger ones with piles upon piles of clothes to sift through. 96% of all proceeds at this store, however, go toward supporting the AIDS Healthcare Foundation. Free condoms are offered near the cashier counter; free HIV testing and a not-for-profit pharmacy sits in the back. The roots of thrifting inherently lie in supporting the community. This is usually accomplished through the affordability of everyday items, but this shop takes it to the next level by showing their dedication to safe sex and access to healthcare. Give this place a visit the next time you cruise through Westheimer -- they deserve your time more than you know.

I did a small and unofficial food drive this past Thanksgiving (just hitting up friends and family for donations) and felt confident about bringing them my haul. Btw, they accept non-perishable food, toiletries, and diapers. First of all, they have a donation bin outside so you can always drop off items. I had quite a few bags and wasn't sure if I should use the bin so I e-mailed. The office was extremely responsive and offered me a selection of times when someone would be on-site. This made it really easy to schedule the drop-off. The employees were extremely nice and communicative. I have made similar donations in the past where it's been tough to get a hold of anyone or they acted like you were a bother. Not here -- very pleasant experience overall. I'm happy to support them in their mission. They also have various volunteer opportunities on their website (distribution, sorting, shopping). If you'd like to help out, through donating or volunteering, this is a great option.

Remember to bring an ID card or driver's license and recent mail or a copy of your lease with you each time you go. They are on Beauchamp. Google the address. They are part of the Zion Lutheran Church that is across the street from the parking lot. Tell them how many people live at your place. Let them know if there are any children and or senior citizens living at the home you are getting food for. You can visit them every 30 days or later. I usually get there on Thursday and arive about 2 hours early. Bring cloth bags and or a big backpack in case you are walking or taking the bus. The 44 METRO bus runs nearby. They have good food and even give you meat. Be polite and respectful of the staff and other food pantry clients. You are going to be getting a fair amount of food. They put them in plastic bags and they might include a cardboard box if available. Be honest with them. If you smoke cigarettes do so away from the front of the building. There are children and elderly women and men there. If you don't need something they offer you don't have to take it. They give a combination of fresh vegetables and fruits. Remember to get a number when they pass them out or upon arrival if you are not there early. Thank them and offer to volunteer to help there if you can and have the free time. As always they are providing a service that you need. They work for free and want to help you. Let them know if your number of household residents changes or if you move when you return to the pantry. They often have books available for children and adults outside and inside of building. Most of the adult books are religious type literature, but I have gotten non fiction and fiction books. I carry a big alice bag from the military and several cloth bags with me. Only one person of the family go into the office to be interviewed and into the pantry to get the food. You enter from the front and go into the office when your number is called, you exit the office into the pantry, and you exit the pantry on the side of the building in the parking lot. They have a waiting room and seats outside of the building to sit on. They have a restroom that locks. Ask for the key in the door facing the entrance.
