Liz at the front desk is patient and understanding. Dr. H is also very kind to us. I do not care for Dr. Fox's bedside manner, when i go to the vet i don't request him. Our cat was in an emergency state a few years ago and he was in and out of the room after tossing around medical terms, he did not explain them and then looked bothered when we asked what that means for our cat. He's very intelligent and he obviously is knowledgeable, but i did not like how my cat was disregarded and our questions of "what does (medical diagnosis/medical term) mean?" seemed to irritate him when he did not explain a single thing to us. We put my cat down two days ago and i was upset that the front desk came into the room while we were mourning asking for payment. I did say i wanted to pay after the euthanasia, meaning i would pay after they take my pet into the back i understand is not a common choice, usually people pay in advance or over the phone. we waited to pay because we were still sorting out cremation plans and we waited until his last moments to officially decide on a place. Maybe it was a misunderstanding, but i would've liked to pay for my dead cat without him in the room. for cremation i recommend Bob with Animal Cremation Society of Chicagoland, you can look at that place if you're looking for affordable private cremation. All in all, this is my vet no matter what. My pets receive great care here and we love Dr. Bobo + front desk

I don't write reviews often, but after reading the many negative reviews, I feel compelled to do…read moreso. On Tuesday morning, I had checked all my outdoor chickens and provided them with food and water. They all looked happy and healthy. On Tuesday evening, I was going to check them again before they went in their coop for the night but one was missing. I knew it was too late to be laying an egg, but I checked the nesting boxes anyways, and found her nearly dead and covered in blood. I took her in and cleaned her up to the best of my ability but there was just so much blood and her eyes were completely swollen and crusted shut. I spent the next two days attempting to nurse her back to health. I stayed up all night dipping her beak in water because she was too weak to drink on her own. I offered her all types of yummy foods but she would barely eat. Even though she was improving, I knew she wouldn't fully get better without antibiotics and for that, she needed to see a vet. I called every vet in my area and no one treats chickens. I ventured further out and still either no one would see her or they didn't have appointments until too far out. I was desperate and finally was advised to call Midwest Bird and Exotic Animal Hospital. They were SO kind to me on the phone and patient with all of my questions. This location is an hour and a half away from me and I was worried she wouldn't even survive the stress of the drive. They talked me through everything and even squeezed me in that same day. After being seen, they confirmed she was very sick and not only was she bloody from being attacked, she had a severe upper respiratory infection. Many reviews say these people are only after money, but I couldn't disagree more. Every step of her healing journey, they provided me with different price options and never once pressured me to choose more expensive treatment. I cannot express enough how grateful I am that they took her in and provided her with EXCELLENT care. We opted to keep her hospitalized until she got enough medication and treatment that she was able to eat again on her own. When we came to pick her up, she was a whole new chicken. She could stand, drink and eat again, and was her regular feisty self! She is still recovering at home but the staff helped us by demonstrating how to give her her meds and also answered all of my million questions. I am positive my Edna would not be alive today without their intervention. I never want to discount anyone else's experience, especially after the loss of a beloved pet, but I am very, very pleased with my experience here and they have a customer for life! Although, I do hope I never need their expert care again :)

Instead, two days ahead of her follow up she got worse. My primary vet found something different- with imaging I could actually see for myself. Not a small discrepancy. I had the expectation that an emergency visit should provide a competent and thorough evaluation. This did not happen. The emotional and financial weight lands on me. I paid for the best and got less.

It's…read morebeen a persistent problem leading us to seek a vet specializing in feline medicine for her care. For years we've gone to chain vets but the problem with those places is your furry friend is treated as a number, not a name. Also, the environment in a normal vet freaks our cat out too much. Prior to being seen, our cat was boarded for some hours and caged in with other animals (dogs and cats) where they would loudly bark and meow in anxiety waiting for the doctor. When your pet is in an unfamiliar environment where other furry folk are freaking out, you're guaranteed the fear within the room is contagious. Our last visit to the vet left her peeing in her carrier, due to overstimulation, on her ride home. This year we took a different approach. We took our time finding a vet and combed through the entire Chicagoland area on Yelp to find cat only vets. Although The Cat Practice is nowhere near us, we held faith in the reviews and made an appointment with Dr. Coughlin before end of the year. Dr is booked months out which to us is a good sign. At arrival, we filled out her paperwork and the receptionist informed us of the intake process. We didn't realize they needed her records from her prior vet(s) but the front desk only needed the names and locations from where she was last seen. Within minutes they were already transferring over the requested information. She was taken in alone to be seen and tested. Once her eval was complete, we were invited in the exam room to speak with doctor on her findings. Dr. Lori Coughlin was thorough with us and addressed any concerns along the way. She was able to clear out some mild earwax buildup which she showed us post swab. She determined the cause of her itching was a combination of a yeast infection in her ears plus possible allergies. We were taken home with topical and oral medications from their onsite pharmacy. A request for OTC (over the counter) Claritin led us to pick some up at our nearby Walgreens the following day. We're crossing our fingers hoping this regimen makes Cleo itch free! Cleo tolerated the entire 90 minute process. Although a little miffed from the typical poke and prod she managed. A little drooling in the mouth but no pee in the carrier pad. Once at home she jumped right out of her carrier to return to her normal way of life. Her full body assessment states she is healthy and mildly overweight (@ 10.5 lbs) which is all we ask for. After our first successful visit we plan to stick with Dr. Coughlin and the kind staff at the Cat Practice for future follow ups.

I speak from the heart when I tell you that there are no words that can fully describe the level of commitment, care, and compassion that this vet has shown my pets. My dog who lived to 15 had a series of health issues, and Companion went above and beyond to provide him with great care. I truly believe they prolonged his life. When he passed away, Companion sent me a card signed by every member of the staff, each with a handwritten note. It was an incredibly meaningful and unexpected gesture during a time of intense grief. My take on the bad reviews? Companion is not an emergency room, nor do they claim to be. Despite that fact, there are some reviewers here who seem to assume that Companion is a Wal-Mart of pet services and therefore should be able to do everything. That's just plain ignorance on the part of the reviewer. If your part is having an emergency, there are many resources online to direct you to a nearby emergency room. But for standard veterinary and grooming needs, Companion Oak Park is the best I've found in the Chicago area.
