If you're an artist, designer or someone with a need to make things, I suggest renting out a studio/office at this place. The rent is pretty affordable and doors are pretty secure. It also has the most epic staircase in Portland (starts at the ground floor and goes way, wayyyyy up - see the pictures in this review).
Goldsmith blocks are kind of a secret haven for creative and industrial types who are doing unique and useful things in Portland. It's also a great destination during First Thursday in the Pearl. There's usually a live show inside and free beer. You might know the building because of Floating World Comics (first floor) and the 24 Hour Church of Elvis (also first floor, and a vestige of old Portland). It's nearby Backspace, which is a great coffee supplier.
There are a lot of amazing people at this building, and some others that are secretive and never open their doors. If you rent a place here and need quiet, try for a spot on the 3rd or 4th floor. If you'd like it a bit rougher, try for 1 or 2.
What else? Ah, the reason for 4 stars instead of 5? There are few downfalls to this place. One is that it is impossible to find parking here on Friday nights, and that downtown isn't free to park most of the time. If you ride a bike, you're good to go. That's about it. I've had a great experience with this place. I've been able to get a lot of great work done here, and have great parties here as well. Suggested. read more
