Orangeburg County YMCA - A very impressive new YMCA opened up in June 2010. Yes, those are some waterslides up front.

I really like this little YMCA. It is smaller than what I was used to in the Chicago suburbs, but I…read morequickly learned the benefits! The staff are as nice as can be, the facility is clean, and I love having such a nice pool to swim laps in, and then the large therapeutic pool (spa) to relax in afterward. It lacks some of the perks of bigger Y's, like saunas, but for its size and affordability, this place is awesome!

It is a very impressive facility with a…read morewaterpark up front, lap pool inside, large basketball gym, fitness center with all sorts of machines and free weights, daycare, a room dedicated for spin classes, and another room for yoga, Body Pump, Zumba, Pilates, and whatever popular exercise comes around. The hardwood floor in the basketball gym and secondary workout room is great for jumping on without much impact on the knees. A day pass is $8 (as of 3/2011) and they hold onto my driver's license until I'm ready to leave. Their low monthly rates are on their website. There aren't that many lockers surprisingly--a lot of people just carry their things with them around the gym. Showers are individual stalls, good-sized and well maintained. The front desk staff is very courteous and efficient--as a first time day member, I'm surprised I was checked in so quickly. There seems to be a wide variety of teachers offering different classes, they were all very friendly and enthusiastic. Some have more demanding classes than others, but they're all very good and provide individual attention. There is plenty of parking up front and in the back. Check their website for all sorts of seasonal activities (baseball, movie night, soccer, etc.). Their website schedule is up to date and the Y has smartphone calendar apps as well. 2013 Update. The yoga mats are showing their age since they opened, some students use them with their shoes on, so they're gnarled up at the ends. Bring your own mat or a towel to cover it up if you can. They'll be getting new Keiser spin bikes at the end of the April 2013. The facilities are still clean and people are still nice. :)

Orangeburg County YMCA - 3 weekends I tried to use prepaid passes and the park was closed because of "possible rain." Then on a sunny day, still closed.

This is a good small studio, and the most affordable yoga in the area. The highest proportion of…read moreclasses are taught by Kimberly, the owner, but there are numerous other teachers as well. Classes tend to be small, ranging from six to twenty people, and generally everyone gets some individual attention, especially those who have less experience or experience trouble getting into the poses. The first class is free, and after that $14 each, although teachers, students, and military personnel get classes for $9. Classes are definitely a physcial challenge, both to strength and flexibility. The only real improvements I could see would be a larger practice area and a bigger changing area/locker room. I'm a guy who sweats a lot, and if I need to go anywhere after a class, the best I can do is a baby-wipe shower in a one-person bathroom.

I am not a member but I dropped in for a special class that's being offered at 7:30pm Wednesdays…read moreduring the month of July... Restorative Yoga with Helen Summer. Since this was my first time at this studio my first class was free (drop-ins thereafter are $10 I believe). The clientele was a bit older for this class (as in past their college/grad school years), I'm not sure what it's like for the traditional classes. Kimberly the owner was very friendly and welcoming upon my entrance and "registration" (they have you fill out a release waiver). The studio is just one big room, with storage and one bathroom in the back. I brought my own mat, but they do provide all other props free of charge (blocks, blankets, sandbags). Unfortunately my asthma flared up and I started having a coughing fit during the wind down of the class (gah so embarrassing) so I excused myself to go cough in the bathroom, when I returned to my mat, Helen had put a few tissues and a cough drop down for me annnnnnnd eventually had to give me a water bottle. Although I was embarrassed, I really didn't feel any judgement. Thank you!!!!!! The class was excellent, very relaxing and a nice change (very good for the lower back pain I was having). Amsa also offers basic flow, vinyasa flow, deep stretch, yin yoga, and gentle stretch as well as special events led by out of town yogis! Check their Facebook for updates. I highly recommend!
