This is a overdue review! I received a haircut from Anila a few months back since I was in the area at the time (~May 2021). Her studio may not be as clean as I'm used to (just a lot of dust and cut hair on the floor), and it is probably due to the fact that she's the only one working here (from other reviews) and from my experience at the time of my visit. I made an appointment a couple days prior (short notice) via the phone and Anila was super accommodating. There was no one at the time of my appointment, and another gentlemen walked in after me and Anila noted that she will get to me after his cut (~25 mins). Thankfully I had no where to be afterwards because this would have been frustrating to me! After she was done with giving the gentlemen before me a haircut, the process seemed smooth sailing from there. She gave me some much needed layers to my "haircut" and was super friendly! The layers blended well and I didn't feel like it was choppy (my worst nightmare)! It was a quick process (~35-40 minutes including wash, cut, and blow dry). It was super inexpensive compared to the other places around. I think my total haircut included tax and tips was under $ 50! I would come back if I'm ever stopping by around the area again! read more

Love that it goes by appointment. Don't have to wait a long time. My daughter waited 4 minutes. I understand that depending of the length of the hair take longer than usual. Anilla and a young lady works as a team. Feel like she understands that time is valuable. Anilla just gave my daughter side curtain bangs, cut her split ends, thinned out her hair and blowed dried hair everything in 45 minutes wow. Wow my 10 year old looks amazing. I have been here about 6 times now for color and some cuts. Great job every time. They are good at fitting me in last minute which is important because I have a crazy schedule. She gave me the best hair cut I've ever had and got exactly what I was looking for when I asked her to turn my black hair blonde! I moved to St Louis for 3 years and moved back to Chicago and found out (through Google searches) that she now owned her own salon. I've been going to her now for about 10 yrs. In my 20 years on this earth I've never left a salon with what I came in for. This place was the first!! Will definitely be coming here again, Anila is a sweetheart and such a great hairdresser to have my hair done by. One thing I've always struggled with was always getting my hair chopped when asking for a trim, Anila worked with me on that front and was able to trim only what was necessary! Avoid this place. The woman that runs this place is a shyster, she will rip you off if she thinks she can get away with it. Basically, she'll cut the minimum amount of hair off your head so that your hair will always stay super long. That way you'll need to come back to get haircuts much sooner than if she gave a real haircut. This way, she makes a lot more money from you! I've called her out on it once or twice when I was paying attention, that she needed to cut certain areas much shorter and she would get exasperated, like a child gets when they're caught with their hand in the cookie jar. This last time I was in a rush and couldn't really look at the cut until I got home... when I did, I realized there were a bunch of areas she hadn't even cut, and there was hardly any difference between the before and after. Don't deal with bullshit when you're getting your haircut, find somewhere else with honest people. You're not trying to get ripped off while you're getting your hair cut. Honestly who does this? As an additional note, this is a review by a man. I'm not sure how she works with women and I know women tend to pay very close attention to their hair so I doubt she would try to pull any BS like this with a woman. Just an FYI. read more

BEWARE of this place! My first time, I was unaware that this lady ran the salon alone. If you're ok with your colorist working on 3-4 other clients while you're scalp is burning you'll love anila. I was absolutely disgusted. I was the only one when I first arrived, told her what I wanted. Started doing the foils and a little boy and his father walked in. So she stopped doing my hair to cut his, after they left another woman came in and she began her color. At this point it had been well over an hour since she had done anything to me. I asked what's going on and then she stopped with her hair and rinsed mine. I wasn't surprised to see it orange and feeling fried. At this point a 2nd woman walked in and anila started on her hair. I was so mad at this point I just wanted to leave. I already invested 2 1/2 hours of my time so I stayed and endured the pain. She continued on taking care of other customers and eventually toned my hair. After 4 hours and $300 yes $300 later I left very unhappy and WILL NEVER GO BACK!! I just realized I've been seeing Anila for 3 years now, which for me is crazy! maybe I'm just turning into an old person :-) she's just the best. This lady knows her stuff. I have very long, very thick hair, and it's hard to work with. Somehow, every time I need a cut, it's washed, cut ,blow dried and styled in half an hour. She moves so fast, and her work is flawless. Also, I forget she's my hairstylist and feel like I'm visiting a friend every time I go to see her. She is a hustler! Her prices are unbeatable. And the quality of her work is 100%. I just couldn't bear BigHair any longer so I noticed the great Yelp reviews of Golden Shears and it's still within walking distance for me. Usually when I get a cut I sorta wave my hands around my head dismissively and use vague adjectives for what I want but Anila ran and got some books to make sure she understood what I was going for and helped me figure it out. I said "inbetween that one and that one" and that's exactly what I got. I dunno how she does it but Anila cuts a mean hair. She casually cut my hair but every single detail was spot on. It was almost too good for my ugly mug but I appreciated her professionalism and skill. She was friendly and the cut was dirt cheap. What more can you ask for? I always wondered what this adorable woman was doing at that good but wacky salon. Golden Shears is a cute little salon that you wouldn't expect to find in the neighborhood. There are awesome comfortable couches, a huge table with a plethora of magazines, a little caffeine station, and a flat screen in the waiting area. The decor is bright and vibrant, which suits Anila's personality perfectly (as opposed to where she worked before). Anila is a great listener when it comes to requesting what you want to do with your hair. She's attentive and will repeat back what you want just to make sure you're both on the same page. Anila will also give you her two cents if she thinks you might be steering in the wrong direction, which is always appreciated. I have no idea about personal hair care so whenever I'm there I always ask her about what my hair needs. She suggests great products and simple methods to keep my hair healthy. Its true, she really is as awesome as they say. They close at 7 and I decided to walk in at 6:15ish. She was cutting a guys hair, had another girl waiting out her color job, and still took me in. I was out in an hour. She's nice, and doesnt push conversation but can keep it flowing. Asks what you want and repeats it to you to make sure she understood what youre looking for. I asked for bangs and she worked her way from longish to shorter bc she was terrified (as was i) of them being too short. Also worth noting that her assistant is really nice too. She washed my hair and explained proper shampooing/conditioning. In the end, my wash/cut/style was $35 pre-tip. Very reasonable, espacially considering the area. It was starting to thunderstorm when I left... to go take the bus. It was amusing that Anila brought me a disposable shower cap, gathered my hair under it, and made me put up my hood and tie it. I walked out feeling like a fool but when I got home my hair was intact! read more

Anila, her coworker and I decided on a level 7 golden brown for my (starting from root to tip) black-burgundy brown-blond hair. It was made clear that we would be bleaching and that was fine, however, it took three times (three aching applications) to not even get the expected lift for the golden brown deposit. Anila gave me the impression during the bleaching process that she didn't fully understand what she was doing. After the tips of my hair weren't lifting anymore, we moved on to depositing. At first glance it was gorgeous from the front because my tips are the color I wanted. The rest of my head looks more orange/redhead toned than golden/brown. During both washes (for the bleach and then the deposit) they both got water down my back, and I never received a scalp massage. Then the coworker who styled my hair didn't give me volume and messy texture like I asked for. I paid $105 for some mediocre hairdressing. Bright side? My hair isn't hideous, it's just not what I wanted, especially for $105. They were friendly and talkative, and even offered drinks. Really disappointed that I couldn't receive five-star worthy service. Better luck elsewhere! read more

It's a cute little salon in North Center, and they really make you feel at home with comfy couches, a gazillion magazines, expresso machine and more. Anila is amazing, and I won't let anyone else cut my hair ever since I found her. She will always remember you by your name, and when she met you. I would suggest making an appointment because she is so popular. For the most she is always on time, but there have been a few times when a walk-in has come right before my appointment, and being the sweet lady that she is she of course takes it so make an appointment to avoid making current customers wait : ) read more

One of the joys in my life is a getting a great haircut. And Anila is the one person who does that every time. I found Anila a couple years ago at another salon and fell in love with her and now visit her at her new digs. She brings efficiency and time together and makes it work. I'm in and out on average 20 minutes and she doesn't miss a beat. I explain to her what I want and she actually listens to me! I have never had anyone else who's cut my have do that. If I'm not sure what I what, she'll let me know what would look good with the frame of my face, hair texture, daily routine, etc. And I go with it, because I trust her enough to know what's good for my hair.
