Bycross Farm Campsite - View of River Wye from landing point

Bycross Farm Campsite

(1 review)

My favourite campsite in the whole wide world…read more I really shouldn't be writing this review as I want to keep it a secret.... but Bycross Farm Campsite has been in the Telegraphs top ten UK campsites, so I think the cat is out of the bag now. Oh well. We've camped here four times now and its always been a lovely experience and on our most recent trip we were the only people here, which was nice. We initially found this campsite when we did our first canoe trip down the River Wye, it was on the Wye Valley Canoe Centres list of places to camp on the river route. That is you could land your canoe at these locations and camp up. The overall highlight of this place is its an apple orchard. A magical setting to be honest as the place is surrounded with fabulous bird life. Be warned the dawn chorus in the summer time is mega here, so if you don't want to be woken, bring good ear plugs. Otherwise, lie back and test out your knowledge of birdsong. Another highlight is this camp is it allows camp fires, unlike most other campsites I've stayed at in the UK. The owner treats campers like the adults they are and as a result the positive camping experience is increased ten fold. Before now there was one shower and two toilets, which was just about enough. But one our recent stay I found out that a whole shower & toilet block has been built out the back. And an excellent one it is too. There are also more wash up sinks, I think three more to the existing one that was already there at the existing toilet block. It's a little rough and ready, but that is what makes Bycross in my opinion the nicest place in the world when it comes to camping. No manicured lawns. There are very little notices up telling you what you are not allow to do. In June 2013 it cost 5 GBP per person per night. The hot power showers will cost you 1 GBP per five mins. For me this is excellent value for a fantastic camping experience.

There are many footpaths that take you to the hills (Clent and Walton Hill) and from both points it's possible to see The Cotswolds, Malvern Hills, The Wrekin, the city of Dudley and many other beautiful points of UK. If you are keen on big walks and want to have the privilege of experience stunning views, Clent Hills is a perfect day out. The standing stones are the highlights from this National Trust protects hills. I have been to Clent Hills in a very lovely day and I can tell even it's still considered a long walk, it's possible to enjoy the journey without getting too tired. There are also plenty of benches spread in the area and they are always pretty inviting if a rest is needed in the middle of the way.

The views from the top are unrivalled in the region, offering a picturesque area to walk dogs or even just for a stroll all year round. Regardless of what time of year it is, Clent has something to offer, becoming an extremely popular destination over the years. If you're not a dog person, I would suggest a mid-week visit, with the weekend being dominated by mans best friend. In the winter especially the hills of Clent offer a great sledging point, attracting a million dog walkers and a million kids who head there to make the most of the rare snow days. Overall, whether it be snow or shine, perhaps not rain, Clent is a great place to visit, one that I definitely recommend.

Alstonefield Camping Barn

Alstonefield Camping Barn

Spend the weekend in a barn? Don't mind if I do…read more It was a little late in the day when my friends and I put together our annual camping trip and before we knew it we were stuck with only the first weekend in September. Camping in September? Well it's worth a try, we'll just need plenty of warm stuff and a strong constitution won't we? It was then that I remembered something from back in my Girl Guiding days - you can camp in barns! Camping barns are pretty much just tents made out of stone, with a roof, with a flushing toilet and a sink if you're lucky (and yes, Alstonefield is a lucky barn). The ground floor of this one has one big communal room with wooden picnic benches and a cooking platform and the whole upstairs is for sleeping. No beds, just a wooden platform. Luxury it is not, but utterly beautiful, rustic, quiet and homely (in its way) it sure is. The barn is literally in the middle of nowhere (though there is still some phone signal), with nothing much around for miles barring the farmhouse at the other end of the dirt track and the myriad sheep and cows. There's no electricity but plenty of nooks and crannies for candles. We were mildly unsettled when we arrived mid-afternoon and could already see our breath on the autumnal air, but this gave way in the evening probably through a combination of the candles, the humans, bringing the barbecue inside and the ever present and loving beer jacket. It wasn't half as cold as we thought it'd be - especially for a clear night. We had plenty of space to cook, eat, drink, dance, sing and shout. Camping barns are a bit of a revelation for me. Warmer and (slightly) more comfortable than camping, with no crouching, no damp, no trekking to the toilet block, no falling over guy ropes, no packing away the canvas in the rain, no neighbours. but still with all the good stuff, the great outdoors, the roughing it, the hanging out with your mates. You can rent the whole of Alstonefield for £84 for the night - it fits 12 people (it's £7 each). What a way to spend a weekend! Just bring your woollens in case.

There is so much to be seen at Kingsbury Water Park that it is worth more than one visit, especially now with the summer knocking on our door! The main entrance, on Bodymoor Heath Rd, takes you straight to the car park (£ 3.50 - minimum price) and Visitor Centre. Better to start your journey getting the map guide (for only 50 pence) at the Information centre. Believe me, this walking & cycling version is very useful! Walking through the area is the best way to experience the nature reserves, from bird species to its several pools, everything is so inviting there. As I don't have a bike yet it was really nice to know there is a "bikes for hire" point inside the park. No excuses for not exercising!

The area is also great to take children to over the summer holiday, and the car park usually ends up jam packed full of families during this time of the year. There's also a cute little train ride that goes through one side of the park. This train is perfect for kids who want to see a great deal of the nature reserve very quickly, especially if you are short for time. But if you aren't short for time, the walks are very insightful for curious explorers, whether you're an adult or a child. There are specific pathways to try and find certain woodland creatures, and I've even come across a water vowl eating a fish while searching the the lakes for other critters.

It's not far from Bakewell (2 miles) and a nice drive into Buxton (10 miles) and there is a pub in Monyash that has an outdoor childrens play area and really nice meals (2 miles) The campsite is fantastic for the kids as it is quite far from the road and you can let the kids roam and play without worrying about them wandering and there are some woods that the kids can explore in and enjoy themselves. At the far end of the camp site is a family only field that tends to be nice a quiet (ish) as the groups field is further away. In all my family love to come here, relax, walk and play and it's greta value for money.
