"You can get anything you want at Alice's Restaurant Walk…read moreright in it's around the back Just a half a mile from the railroad track You can get anything you want at Alice's Restaurant" (Arlo Guthrie) Alice could easily get anything she wants for her restaurant right here on Progress Lane in Waterbury. Imagine a store as big as a Home Depot that only sells restaurant stuff. It's like a Disneyland full of trays, pots and pans, mixing machines, ice makers, bar equipment, pizza paddles, ovens, fryers, griddles, bar stools, slicers, and pretty much anything you have ever seen in or need for a restaurant. I don't own a restaurant, but I definitely developed a greater appreciation for what it really takes to operate one. Wine glasses, bowls, plates, cutlery, fry baskets, big knives, spatulas, gloves, bowls as big as a witch's cauldron, bathroom signs, dining room chairs and barstools, slotted spoons, whisks, chef clothing, big pans and serving trays, coffee stations, chopping boards, a tortilla press, even French Fry cutting machines. We saw them all. And then there were the huge things like deli showcases and enormous dough mixing machines that reminded me of land locked cement mixers. What a fun time we had wandering the aisles and gawking at everything. I've truly never seen a store like this before. Its open to the public and no membership is needed to gain entry. So what did we buy? We replaced an old plastic one pint measuring cup that was getting impossible to read. The new one ($3.99) is very sturdy and super clear to read. We also bought a nifty 10-cut pie and cake marker ($5.99) that will come in handy on Thanksgiving. We had a blast !!

Alright. I saw all the pretty ads all over the place. In the NH Register, and everyday on my way…read moreto work. I love to save a buck or two on a bottle of Pert as much as the next guy and they put a good chunk of change into advertising so I was kind of hoping for a big gawdy spectacle. I knew it wasn't going to beat "The World's Biggest Card Shop" or "South of The Border", but I was at least hoping for a place to pick up some gag gifts or something once in while. It was a late night as I pulled out the Subway headquarter parking lot. I had an hour to kill before I had to pick up my son from the babysitter so I decided to go exploring. I drove up to the hill right around the old abandon Bic property. I was counting the numbers till it looked like 500 was in reach. I see a darkened parking lot with old creaky abandon guard shack, not a soul around. I see a orange cone with a tiny ink jet printed "Real Deal" logo on it with an arrow. **thump, thump** Do we dare travel on? **thump, thump** Yes we dare! I travel through the pitch black lot, orange cones with arrows as my only guide. I finally get to a clearing, which while squinting through some flickering lights, I can some abandon factory and warehouse buildings. A large row of signs saying "Real Deal Parking only" stretched like tombstones in a place that is quite empty. **thump, thump, thump** I made it this far. I've got to see what its all about, if only to be sacrificial lamb to help my fellow yelpers. **thump, thump, thump** Another shabbily, temporary printed sign is taped to awning of a narrow steep stair well. The florescent lights flicker, a gentle "mug me, stab me, take my kidneys" in morse code as I proceed to meet fate. **thump, thump, thump** My old friend orange cone, points the way. "Step into the the light", another temporary sign that points to a non descript doorway. **thump, thump, thump, thump** Insight a man stares miserably at a the cash register, like he doesn't know what it is. As I proceed down the corridor, I see another young guy take something off the shelf and put on another shelf, over and over again. **thump, thump, thump, thump** I walk though the room unacknowledged, guessing I'm not the mark they are looking for. I see folding card tables containing rows of board games from early nineties, still shrink wrapped and still more expensive then my local Target. Baskets of scrunchies, and other supplies underneath. The walls decorated with your average dollar store catch, except marked up another 5 bucks. **THUMP, THUMP, THUMP** Pregnancy tests that seem refurbished, condoms that would turn to dust if exposed to air. Kitchen supplies that you would probably lose a finger with. **THUMP, THUMP, THUMP** After I make full lap, still unacknowledged, I slip out the door and to my car, in an embarrassing fast walk. **THUMP, THUMP, THUMP, THUMP, THUMP** All I could think of was that I wis hI knew the code word so I could get my AK-47, or what ever they are actually selling in that place. If my tax dollars are sponsoring this lame ass sting, for some grey haired criminals, I'm going to be pretty tweaked. GO COROLLA GO! I happy to report I'm home, and safe with all my internal organs still internal, and not on the black market. Maybe in the daylight, this place won't seem as sketchy, but I didn't see anything in there worth my time to try my luck there again.
