    Berlin Stone and Mulch

A simple business with a few key products for landscaping…read more Mulch, decorative stone, and base materials like sand, stone dust, process, trap rock, and topsoil. That's pretty much the long and the short of it. I found the perfect match for the stone beds that came along with my new home, so I only needed a yard of the "2-inch Minus River Rock" they sell to do some patchwork. Check that - I probably needed a half a yard. At least 2/3 of what I bought is now sitting in a pile behind my shed. LOL, I guess you gotta learn the hard way sometimes. Anyway, it was $60 for the yard, $35 to dump it at my home. They were there in 30 minutes so I could get started quickly on my landscaping project. I know, I could have spent less renting a truck and just getting half a yard, but $100 was well worth the beautiful results. The only slight complaint is that the load was kinda dirty. Maybe I should have known this in advance - they were getting low on the product when I arrived, so it was almost inevitable that some dirt was going to come along with it. Still, we are talking about decorative stone here. I guess a few rainstorms will clean everything up... not a huge deal. Everyone is really nice. I even once got an unsolicited callback after they didn't pick up the phone. I was just asking about their hours, but a very thoughtful gesture nonetheless.

I purchased 30 yards of what was sold as screened top soil last April. It was definitely not…read morescreened, as basketball size chunks of concrete don't make it through screens. It was also loaded with stones and broken glass - still finding pieces of glass and the stones are still surfacing after the winter. We couldn't keep new grass alive, despite feeding and watering. It completely does off over the winter, so we had it tested. It's highly deficient and needs a lot of nutrients. We would have been better off purchasing packaged soil. They won't make this right because they said we waited too long to bring it to their attention. Whether I told them a few months ago or now, it doesn't change the fact that it's sub-standard material that should not be passed off as top soil. It does t seem to be a good business practice. I had planned to buy stone for the landscaping around my driveway, but I won't be doing that now. I also won't recommend them to anyone else.
