Glacial Grooves is a beautiful and interesting stop on the island. It's in/part of the state park, but since it's pretty popular, has it's own parking, and then the trail connects to the North Shore loop. The grooves are pretty cool to see, and there were some informative plaques to explain the history and geology of the place. It won't take you long to see, unless you're hiking the trails. We went back a second time for the trail, and minus an off-leash uncontrolled dog incident, had a pretty good time. read more

In the area be sure to stop!! Couldn't check in as no an available cell service. Not a lengthy trail but sure worth the time. Well documented boards with explanations of this historical phenomenon. read more

Glacial Grooves Geological Preserve are the most accessible and famous glacial grooves in the whole world. They were caused by movements of glaciers over limestone bedrocks from Canada into Ohio during period of several hundreds of thousands of years due to the long cycles of climate change. The place is very memorable and majestic. Unfortunately we chose the wrong weekend to cross to the Kelly's Island, since apparently all golf carts were rented early in the morning and we had to walk from the landing to the preserve took us 45min , but we were not the only ones). It's really amazing to see glacial grooves as well preserved and visible as the ones here on Kelley's Island! It is rightfully a National Natural Landmark. They've done a great job organizing signage and setting up a nice walkway around which you can get a lot of views and angles of the area. The signage shares information about the history, geology and nature of the area. Fractures and fossils are also visible. There is a small parking lot available. read more

This neat history spot looks like it was man-made however it was made by nature! Some of it is handicap accessible but not all of it. It's definitely something to see if you've never seen it before. It's pretty well kept, And free to enter. There's a bridge overlooking it. A gorgeous view from the bridge. There's a trail that goes off the beaten path for those that are brave. A must-see if you're on the islands. Yeah, you learned about glaciers in school, and sure, northern Ohio is pretty flat because of them, but to get a better sense of the power of ice come see this park. Huge grooves scoured in rock (by rocks carried in the ice.) There's not much else here, but it's a quiet park with pretty amazing things to see. Fossils in the rocks add to the oddity. A good field trip for your family, to show kids what they've studied. read more

Definitely a must-see! We rode our golf carts to the grooves and we took lots of pictures! Cell service was really spotty, and then I got a text from my carrier welcoming me to Canada! It is a super gorgeous area, but be aware that your service won't be good! read more

Time for a refresh on this site. C'mon State of Ohio, pony up a few bucks and provide some additional landscaping, clean up the scratched/foggy plexiglass on the signage and make this site something more than it is. Much of the interpretation of the Glacial Grooves is repetitive - basically, the same information is presented multiple ways and said differently on the half dozen markers surrounding the Grooves. Also, please add a bike rack in the parking area. It's unfathomable that there is not one there. read more

The Glacial Grooves on the north side of Kelleys Island are the largest easily accessible such grooves in the world. This memorial is very well-maintained and clean. There is a lot of historical info available on-site to read and learn about the grooves. Very cool, and rare! From a walkway, footbridge and stairs you can look down on the immense grooves, which are 400 feet long, 35 feet wide and up to 10 feet deep, suggesting the tremendous power of the ice that formed them. Average visit time: Allow 30 minutes-- History: Of Devonian limestone, Glacial Grooves Geological Preserve contain marine fossils that are 350 to 400 million years old. They were scoured into solid limestone bedrock about 18,000 years ago by the great ice sheet which covered part of North America. Glacial Grooves Geological Preserve is locally managed by the Ohio Department of Natural Resource's Lake Erie Islands State Park. It's definitely worth a visit! read more

Absolutely worth the price of the ferry alone. The entire family enjoyed seeing these grooves. Everything else on the island is a bonus. Make sure you plan to stop here when visiting - you will be very glad you did. read more

While staying across the street at the state park campground, we wandered over to check out the Grooves. It is a nice little spot. We arrived close to sunset, which is a good time to go. When the sun is low in the sky, there are more shadows in the grooves, making for good photography. There are no facilities other than a parking lot. The groves themselves are fenced by rather run down chain link, and the interpretive plaques had seen better days, but that may just have been because it was the end of the season. Overall, it was a great, quick prehistory lesson. read more

Great place to visit for the historical and natural significance. Hubby and I visited in September one year for our anniversary and had the entire place to ourselves. The tourist crowd was gone and no one was even in the parking lot but us. We got to walk around at our leisure and take pictures without any tourists in the way. A neat little state park/landmark, created 18,000 years ago when the great ice sheet scraped against the limestone that made up a good portion of Kelleys Island at the time. Features a bunch of little plaques that talk about the history of the island as well as the creation of the grooves. Free and open during daylight hours! Great for a nice little walk. read more

Just need a quick visit here. Not much to see, but it is history so say been there, done that. Don't plan on walking from the Jet Express drop off. We were told it was a 5 minute walk. HA! Rent a golf cart!!!! read more
