This is a fun stop to pass away the time with three floors of books, entertainment, crafts,…read morenotepads, you name it. I was delighted to find a decent sized English section with classic literature kicking off at 3,60 Euro. The staff was friendly enough and able to point me in the right direction. I appreciated the cool blast of air conditioning the moment I stepped inside. The space is very crisp and modern. If you're looking for travel books and guides, they have you covered. However, mostly in Italian. I would describe this place as the Barnes & Noble of Italy. I also noticed that they have a fair number of kids books and toys available. Happy reading! (And AC;)

I took the train into Milan specifically to go to this bookstore. I wanted to hold a real book…read moreinstead of attempting to read on my phone and being constantly distracted by messages and nonsense. American Bookstore wasn't an Amazon-styled warehouse of books. They had no catalog. You just look at the shelves and pick something out. And they have an immense selection to peruse and ponder. There were a lot of classics and plenty of new titles. They even had a large selection of rare books with a staff dedicated to restorations. It felt right out of The Nineth Gate. I spent an hour pulling volumes and pondering before I made my selection. It was one of the best hours I've spent in days but will be penultimate to when I open the book later on.

This tiny bookstore is chock full of books and if you're dazzled by Prada and Versace, you'd miss…read morethis place. That would be a mistake. The Bocca bookstore opened in Turin in 1775. Yes, that 1775. It is likely one of the oldest bookstores anywhere. It was originally a chain of bookstores with others in Paris and Florence and Rome and Turin, but today only the Milan location remains. And in fact is only here in the Galleria Victtorio Emmanuele II because the people petitioned the government for it to remain. Thank you, Milanese, for recognizing how important books and reading are to humanity! This is a small shop and it is quite full. Some of the custom art is very expensive (look through the glass in the floor tiles) but there are many books here that are quite normally priced. And yes, some even in English. How cool is that! Libraccio is a chain of bookstores famous also for its used books section, this one in Navigli is…read moregreat because of it's position, right on the small Naviglio channel so if you're walking around you might want to stop by and find a second hand book for 2 euros. They have other two small shops nearby, one for school stuff (notebooks, etc) and another one for new books. The variety is mostly of Italian books but they have a good English section and even something in French, Spanish and German (just don't expect to see the novelties). The books are not ordered alphabetically so if you're looking for a specific book it can take ages to find (although they're more or less divided in genres), the conditions of most aren't very good and there's a funny smell inside, but for 2 euros, what can you expect?

I came from the other side of the canal and had to cross this small pedestrian bridge, walk around this small but mega old church, walk over railroad tracks, through a street with only old concrete walls around in blazing Italian July heat. When I finally turned around the corner, it was a bit of a shock. Gogol & company was in the front of a new fancy development. It had a small garden of herbs nearby with some shaded seating with several patrons already enjoying it. I was in dire need of some internet access and coffee. Being an exhausted tourist in need of a large supply of caffeine to feed on while I do some interneting, I gave in and asked for an American coffee. They actually had a drip pot on the side already made for people like me. I know, it's terrible of me to do in Italy, but I was really tired. Since I was hungry, I also got some small eggplant dish with some bread. It was delish and only 2 euros. I think they have real meals, but I didn't try it and I was a bit confused about them. They speak English, so you can just ask them if you need. Oh, and the bookstore here is awesome. Lots of books on politics, philosophy, socialism and more, but also some graphic novels. They have a really nice collection of children's books. Unfortunately for me, everything was in Italian. So, I just amused myself by adoring the gorgeous artwork on the book covers and trying to learn basic Italian in the children's section. They also exhibit artwork by local artists. Nice decor. They have a second floor for more books and also sitting. I liked how I saw the barista went to clip off some herbs from the garden for a dish.

Another favorite in Milan. This is a bookstore/bar/cafe. It is a wonderful little hang out to…read moremeet friends, do some work, or read. The menu is simple, but the quality of ingredients is good. Gogol has a variety of honey, jams and wine for sale as well. They often have local art displayed and it changes regularly. I enjoy the music they play. You never know what it will be, but it is always good. Gogol offers free wi-fi and dogs are welcome. The couple that own the place are very nice too.

This is a very nice and well appointed bookstore in the Old Port area of Genoa. I ended up with a cool 2014 Diary (in Italian), a panoramic postcard, and lots of ideas of what I could do in this area, if only I had a "few" more days to explore.
