**update** Doris - Thank you for the reply. I guess when people have as poor of an experience as I and some of the other user comments here indicate. Maybe offering to make up for it in the way of a comped meal or discount to try and regain their business makes more sense. Otherwise leaving these reply comments only seem half hearted and patronizing. People seem impressed with this place, those people don't impress me. This place really isn't all that great. I've been here a few times and the service is always sub par. Today I was sat and waited 5 minutes before my server arrived while I sat there, was close to just leaving. They up charge you for everything here and unless it's in fine print on the menu they don't give you a heads up. Do I really care about 50¢ for an egg roll instead of a crab Rangoon or 50¢ for brown rice instead of white rice? No, but a polite "there is an additional charge for that" would be appreciated and somewhat customary. Server never checked on if anything else was needed or if I needed a refill. GingeRootz never fails to satisfy. Tonight we came during a busy time and were offered immediate seating on the patio. Good choice! It is a warm evening, and the patio is terrific with a stylish canopy and wonderful piped-in music. Our meal was amazing as well. I had the piano bean curd, and Lori had a build-a-bowl featuring shrimp. We also started with edamame. Everything was hot, fresh and scrumptious. I come in about 2-3 times a month if not more sometimes, and this is by far the best Asian restaurant I've been to in the fox valley area. I lived in japan for a few years and for the sushi and sashimi here is by far the best I've had compared to the homeland of the food. The wait staff is always polite and courteous, and the owner really takes the time to get to know his customers. If I could, I would give this place a 10 out of 5. read more

GingeRootz has become one of my favorite "happy place" restaurants. Whenever I'm in a lousy mood, I'll head to GingeRootz to cheer myself up. I frequent this restaurant so often that the waitstaff now knows my normal order. I love the clean, minimal atmosphere, and the food has never let me down. The menu has a wide selection of modernized Asian dishes, and there is something for even the pickiest of eaters. Since living in Appleton this is one of our favorite places. The service is always good and the wait is never long. While the Asian food isn't necessarily, traditional, the flavor is good and a bit more upscale tasting. The orange chicken has the same great flavor of the stuff you typically order in on a rainy day but the flavor is cleaner and you don't feel like you need a nap after eating it. The sushi rolls are pretty great as well, the Appleton roll is by far my favorite. This is a great place to go with a group of friends or a date. It's modern in the inside, the drink menu is good and the bar is a good place to wait if there's a wait on a Friday or Saturday night. read more

Went here for dinner with some friends. Our server was very fun and our orders were taken and we got our food in a timely matter even thought it was a busy weekend. We were all in the mood for sushi even though they only offer a few different rolls. Overall it was just ok. We ordered the Appleton Roll (Best one!!), Spider roll (meh), Pumpkin Roll (ok), and the Philadelphia roll (smoked salmon and sushi do not mix IMO). For sides we got Calamari and Crab Rangoon The Calamari was fine. The Rangoons pretty much just tasted like melted cream cheese. But who doesn't love cream cheese? They were still pretty good with the house Sweet and Sour. Q To drink I ordered Plum wine. I'd never had Plum wine before so I didn't know what to expect. It was served slightly warm and has a very strong aroma. At first I thought I was going to really like it but after the first few sips it began tasting like cough syrup. (I didn't factor this into my rating because I had no clue what plum wine was supposed to be like) I ordered Pad Thai to-go and that was good! Attempted to support local business during virus, but they can not handle take out business. Ordered via phone and told us to pick up in 60 minutes. Got to restaurant an hour later and went inside to pay. After payment with tip processed they said they would run it out to me in car in a few minutes. Sat in car 30 minutes then went back into to restaurant to get update. Told me they have not started it yet and it would be another 30 minutes. Asked for a refund as which they said they would process - never got the money back. Thank good PF Chang opened so we have another options. read more

I've been here a couple of times all being positive experiences. I love the sushi and the crab rangoon. My most recent visit was for a special event and got to learn how to roll and make sushi. They have a small private room that's good for groups or in this case an event. The staff were great as they talked about the history of sushi and why certain ingredients were used. You do everything yourself and you go step by step as a group. Probably the trickiest part was cutting the sushi. It was fun as we got a chance to make our own sushi rolls with the provided ingredients. If you're in need of a party idea, try a rolling sushi event with Gingerootz! read more

I have been eating at this place since 2007 when they first hired a Korean chef right out of Korea. His dishes were closer to the authentic version of where the dishes are from (except that don't have kimchi - disappointing) and most importantly, they tasted great. I notice the taste has been declining over the years. Bibimbap used to be the best I had tasted up and down the East coast and throughout Midwest but not anymore. Fried rice is still good with the shredded dried scallops and pine nuts but again it was not as tasty as before now that they skim on the quantity of the shredded scallops. There's not much I can review for the rest of the other Asian dishes. Just another bland in a non-special way for taste. I feel they have stopped trying and they should not because Appleton is expanding so much last few years and more and more people are coming to it for business and pleasure. I can only imagine the competition will go up and with foodies coming into town, they will continue getting negative reviews. Used to love you Gingerzootz but not anymore. read more

This is probably my favorite Asian restaurant in Appleton. Me and my father are visiting from San Francisco and this place wowed me. The service here was impeccable and everyone had a warming attitude. If you come here anytime soon I highly recommend the whole roast duck. Pretty good. The interior and service are very nice and borderline fancy. Which to be honest, is not something I'm used to at an Asian restaurant. The food was pretty average. It was definitely good, but nothing that really matched the ambiance and servers. I did really like the create-a-bowl part of the menu. Being able to choose the sauce, noodles, vegetables, and protein is really nice. Kind of like a HuHot but much better, and all the work taken out of the equation. The crab rangoons were okay, not bad, but not good. We then waited 45 minutes (no exaggeration) after ordering to receive our sweet and sour chicken and tangerine chicken. The waitress told us several times that the food would be up "right away" and did thank us for our patience. Unfortunately our patience was not rewarded with a satisfying meal. There was nothing wrong with the dishes per se, but the quality and flavor were at or below that of an Asian buffet. Hopefully this was the exception to their service and not the norm, but we will not be returning. read more

We tried this place on a whim when we had a sushi craving and had had a WONDERFUL experience. The service was fast, super friendly, accommodating and fun. The supervisor who served us explained everything, gave great recommendations and even helped get rid of one of our groups hiccups! The sushi was very good and I highly recommend the rainbow roll and mango fusion rolls. We happened to be there during the Chinese New Year celebration and got to witness the full Lion Dance. IF YOU DON'T WANT TO DRIVE TO PF CHANGS... I think this just about fixed my craving for PF Changs Lettuce wraps the minute I sat down in the comfy curvy booth and ordered their rendition of the lettuce wraps on the appetizer menu. I think I like the flavor a bit more even, just wish the portion was bigger. I have had almost everything on the menu. Go for happy hours where the appetizers or your drinks are paid for, whichever is less. Works out great if you want to spend $30 and have a bottle of wine and snack on 3-4 different menu items! Suggested: Crystal Shrimp (Mayo creamy base , fried, and served with pineapple. Hey, it's a sinful treat when you forget about your diet for the day) Hot Pot (when you remember you are back on your diet) Malaysian Curry (when you need comfort food and medium spiciness), General Tso Chicken. Actually, that Tso sauce is made from scratch and so good you want to pour it over yourself so order extra on side right away. The Singapore rice stix are very flavorful with a dry curry spice so these are not saucy but order with extra powder on them per the chef recommendation and you will like the flavor. Came here for lunch today with some friends. I saw there were juice options available and asked the waitress if they were made with fresh fruits. She told me the mango, guava, and passionfruit juice were, but the others would be store bought. I followed her recommendation and ordered mango juice. It was obviously diluted with apple juice or something because I could hardly taste the mango. The caterpillar roll we ordered had "tobico" (tobiko) listed as an ingredient. When it came out, there were maybe 7-10 measly eggs per sushi piece. The other dishes we ordered were chicken based and tasted good but not authentic. read more

I've been looking forward to going to GingeRootz for a few years but hadn't gotten the chance until recently. Man, was that totally not worth the anticipation! The dining experience was so so. Certainly not objectionable, but nothing amazing or spectacular. The worst part was that I was very excited to see that the menu listed brown rice instead of white rice for the upgrade of 25 cents. You never see brown rice on the menu in Northeastern Wisconsin so maybe they honestly had no idea what brown rice should be. What I got was that fake Uncle Ben's stuff that is basically white rice with some caramelized food color added to it. Ugh! My dining companion nailed it: it's certainly not regional cuisine but rather like they took PF Chang's menu and tried to copy it as much as possible with a close approximation of what they think a dish should taste like. Even PF Chang's has real brown rice, though, and they don't charge extra for it. The fact that this place has earned several Golden Forks cinches the fact that the people in NEWis really don't have any idea what good Chinese food should taste like. In summary, certainly not bad food or service, but man, totally overrated. read more

We ordered in a lunch from here for my coworkers birthday. It took over 1.5 hours for the food to be delivered. Once it was delivered they had forgotten one of the items we had ordered. Unfortunately it was the birthday persons meal! I called to have the meal sent over and was told we could either 1) have a gift card sent over for the value of the meal or 2) they could send the prepare and send the meal over. I chose the second option as we were all ready to eat. The manager told me it would be at least 30 minutes to get the meal to us. It was almost another hour before it actually got here. This was the first and most likely the last time I will order from here. I was very disappointed in the service and the way they rectified the mistake. read more
