This place is awesome. Came here for a quick stroll around the park with my dog, and it was perfect for a nice lunch. I had the hummus cucumber sandwich with the jasmine green iced tea, just enough to get you full and energized for the rest of the day. Very kind owner, its like a mom and daughter shop, and they have a really great variety of snacks and sodas (like lavender and chocolate) that definitely caught my eye. This is my local and I love it. It's not cheap, and the service is sometimes a tiny bit slow -- but it's VERY worth it. I recommend the wedge salad, the BLT, and ALL THE BAKED GOODS. Super cute little market. It has a very small menu but the prices were all reasonable. I tried the arugula salad, it was good but not amazing. It didn't have anything too special except that the dressing was very fresh and delicious. I just would have hoped there would have been more body to the salad, like chicken or veggies, something of that sort. The salad was huge and they gave me one container of dressing...which is probably not enough to dress the entire salad but even if it was when I asked for another side of dressing the waitress looked at me like I was crazy for needing another and only responded in a monotone "sure" attitude. Regardless, this place is quite quaint and had very fresh items to their menu. Maybe next time I'll try another item on their menu and it'll surpass the salad I had. read more

Great spot! Walking distance from my work, yummy food, and great drinks. The mint tea and lattes are my fave go to for the afternoon pick me ups. The portions are generous and I love their homemade pickles. Actually have yet to try their baked goods (I know a crime, but I have been trying to be good), however I hear they are delicious. Ugh. This is so hard for me. I love this place, and I usually have a great experience....but, today when I dropped by to get lunch and the girl that took my order was -for lack of better words to describe her- a "b". She had an attitude from the second I ordered, yet I was still nice and said thank you. I asked her a question, and she looked me UP AND DOWN. I have no idea what I did to deserve that, but that experience is going to make it hard for me to come back. Especially while she's working. They offer a really great espresso drinks, and a nice selection of scones and other pastries. Friendly and comfortable atmosphere.

This is a mom and pop, (and grandmom, and grandpop, and daughter operation...even the eight year old girl will come by and chat with you, with more poise than most sommeliers), that just opened up in the Old Eddie's Market. While Eddie's, as occupied by its latter proprietors, had indecipherable Soviet Post Office Hours, Ginger is pretty much open from a more convenient FiddlerRoofian Sunrise to Sunset, to accomodate ideal rumpus hours across the street at Grant Park. My picnic date and I ordered the Roast Beef Sandwich ($7) with arugula, red onion marmalade, and horseradish aioli. The horseradish was mild, and good for those whose palate and disposition are not "as thick as Tewkesbury Mustard," but the sandwich was still very flavorful, as was the marinated veggie with goat cheese sandwich ($6). As side salads, we got the Greek (picnic date thought there was too much raw amino acid sulfoxide-laden onion) and the potato salad (very classic and simple, but good...not too much mayo, but still soft potatoes for the win!). I came back the next day and ordered a cafe mocha, which is made with our native Pasadena delicious Jone's coffee. The owner was so excited about the new shipment of chocolate, and thus my mocha was truly Oompa-loompaesque. (He asked if he put too much chocolate, which is unfortunately a question based on an impossible premise, and I will soon vigorously recommend that he read "Plato and Platypus Walk Into a Bar.") I do have perhaps one gripe with the otherwise delicious cafe mocha; in my opinion it wasn't quite warm enough, so increasing the brew temp would be my only suggestion. We partook of the free samples of desserts (a savory cookie with lots of herbs and spices and a flaky pastry with chocolate), and both were delicious. The store is very cute and has old fashioned Hershey bars, soda pop bottles, and various other Ye-Olde-Confectionary-Shoppe style items. They also have a few toys for the kiddos. These are cool, but I do recommend supplying larger and heavier hula hoops, for all but the tiniest of children. This is because (according to a powerpoint I just found on the internet), it's easier to keep the hula going that way: "The heavy hoop has more rotational energy, so it will be easier to keep moving. The faster the hoop goes!, the more centripetal force...which pushes it up against my body! The more normal force it feels from my body, the more static friction is keeping it from sliding down." Basically, what happened was that I told my picnic date I was a world-class hula hooper, and this ended in a major embarrassment. Anyway, I highly recommend heading to Ginger and having a nice picnic, while ogling at cute basketball players in the courts across the street. Been here a few times and their sandwiches and pastries have been solid, plus they have a good fresh lemonade with some local mix of other fresh fruit depending on the day. Good place to grab a sandwich and chill at Grant Park with your kids at their playground. read more

I'm torn on this review! I love this place and want to give them 5 starts. The location is amazing, the food is fantastic, they offer gluten free items and almond milk for coffee, the owner is so nice, they have the cutest most unique merchandise in the store. However the two dark hairs sisters that work there are some of the rudest people I have ever come across. EVERYTIME I have been in there, if they or even one of then are there it ruins the experience for me. And that is what this market seems like it should be an experience. I would come in a lot more, but I hesitate worried I might see one of them at the counter. It literally makes me want to turn around and leave. The two star rating is for the food and ambiance only. I have been to this place once before and had a great experience while I studied. My review here is about the STAFF From the very beginning, the staff was indifferent to our presence and not service-oriented. They seemed preoccupied with closing and told us right away that any orders would be 'to go' only. Both employees barely looked at us and mumbled back and forth to each other when we asked questions about the menu. Finally, when I went to order, the employee at the cash register barely made eye contact and grumbled, "what do you want to order?" We both left the shop feeling as if we had greatly inconvenienced the employees and RUINED their day. We were not rude or difficult customers, and they were unfriendly from the very beginning. I know good staff works here because I have come in the past and had a pleasant experience. However, when it comes time to do closing chores, the customer should always take priority. read more

Cute sandwich/salad/soup place with a little marketplace selling food items and various gift shop type things. My nephew was a little sulky when we first came in because he wanted fast food, but the first bite of his tuna sandwich made him smile and say he was glad we came. He mentioned how tasty his sandwich and his hibiscus tea was several times. My turkey sandwich was just as good. The pickled cucumbers and carrots on the side were a nice touch. Cute family owned place with good sandwiches and salads--good also for vegetarians. We had the veg sandwich and kale salad, yummy. The kid had a fascinating looking grilled cheese on fruit nut bread. I would have tried it but she ate it too fast. They're still stocking up because it just opened but the have a interesting variety of oldie time candies. While the sandwiches are pretty decent, the place suffers from a lack of variety and somewhat inflated prices. The bigger issue, however, is the fact that on two occasions (TWO!!), I found mold in my food. On the first occasion. the fruit salad(one of the side salad choices) was somewhat warm and upon closer inspection appeared moldy. On the second occasion, I discovered that , the rye bread had white, fungal-like specks. I'm holding on to the bread to see if they grow. if it doesn't , then i'll rate this place up :), but if it does -- NEVER AGAIN, and perchance a call to the health inspection. (NB. Both times were to-go, so I didn;t go back and complain. Besides, nothing can make this right. What would make up for the mold, and who-knows-what in the back?perhaps a replacement moldy sandwich?) The location for this coffee shop is the best part. It's a nice peaceful corner across from the park. The coffee shop itself is charming. There's art on the walls from locals and they have a little shop with cute handmade items and lots of healthy snacks, as well wine and beer. It's a great spot to grab a quick bite or if you're looking to have a picnic, you can take your food and drinks and walk across the street. Enjoy your food under a shady tree. I just left the market hoping to find a loaf of bread. I was looking at a loaf when one of the employees, an older women, said, "I'm gonna take the from you." She didn't ask if I was going to purchase it or even ask if she can use the loaf. Even though I am not taking it personal, her approach to me was unacceptable. In a way I am glad I didn't get a loaf. One, the service does not deserve my business, two, paying over $4 for a loaf of bread is quite expensive. read more
