I've been to Ginger Corner Market twice and enjoyed the experience both times. The second time I visited I ordered the same thing as my first trip because it was that good. I chose the ham and Brie sandwich with mixed greens and gig preserves. I wouldn't call it a "grilled cheese" because the ham and the cheese make up the sandwich equally. The saltiness of the ham and the creamy Brie are perfect together. The bitter arugula and sweet figs are the perfect compliments. The sourdough is great for this sandwich but not as sour as I normally like. This sandwich doesn't need it. It's a great meal to eat and then walk back to work. It's not too heavy that you'll be in a food coma but substantial enough that you won't be hungry. I definitely recommend it to any meet eater. read more

I tried this place out for the first time just now. I had to move my car from its parking spot and figured I'd stop by and try this cute little place out. The customer service was fine. Nothing stuck out as rude or anything. I asked one woman what the soup of the day was, to which she responded "Tomato". I ordered that but also wanted a grilled cheese sandwich. She then asked if I wanted to make it a half sandwich/half soup combo and I went ahead and went with that. She also asked if I was OK with the fruit and nut bread and mixture of swiss and cheddar cheeses in my sandwich. Both were fine. I was not disappointed at all. I think the fruit and nut bread compliments the cheese really nicely. The tomato soup was divine. Nice and velvet-y and it wasn't a complete puree. It still had some of the tomato pulp and body, which I appreciated. If I were to suggest anything it'd be a bit of butter on the bread and bit more of a crisp on the outside. Without the fat of the butter it's difficult to get a nice crisp on a grilled cheese sandwich. The standard panini press does not do this sandwich justice. The price was fair: a little over $7 The wait for the food was longer than what I'd expect since there weren't that many people in the joint, but it wasn't egregious or anything. I much prefer a little longer wait than normal for higher quality food. I'll probably visit again soon. :) read more

Cute idea, poor execution. Like other reviews have said, this is a cute, hipster, neighborhood market. However, being cute and writing the menu on a chalkboard does not excuse bad food. My friend and I went at 11:50 on a week day. I ordered the kale salad and he got a ham and horseradish sandwich (?). While waiting for the food to come, we walked around the store part of the restaurant. Yes, they sell local goods, but they are overpriced. They had local whole wheat bread for $5! It was delivered twice a week! At that rate, you can't even call it fresh. The jams, although canned locally, we clearly marked up to reflect the cachet associated with eating locally. They also had butter, milk, and soft drinks, at several times the grocery store prices (they were national brands). The food came 20 minutes later. Slow, maybe this was part of the charm. As we started eating, more people came in. Very quickly, they ran out of bread and told everyone to order soups/salads. My salad was ok. They didn't cut the large tough stems off of the kale. The roasted carrots were a nice idea, but they were cold (clearly made a long time before). The orange dressing was a nice touch. My salad came with a slice of raisin nut bread. It was stale. My friends sandwich was just ok. It had unremarkable deli meat, not much horseradish, and enough cheese to make the whole thing oily. Overall, this place did not live up to my expectations. I would love a family run joint that has a commitment to excellence to serve the best freakin' food they could. I would be willing to pay these expensive prices. Ginger is the kind place I love to find. It's smart, cool, friendly and absolutely someplace that I will continue to frequent when I'm in the neighborhood. I stumbled across it with my son the other day after picking him up from camp and we were impressed with the unique products (the candy) and quality of the food (excellent), plus it just feels nice. The kind of place where becoming a local would be worth it. it's a corner market with the vibe of something different. Artisanal cheeses, full sugar soda, cookies, baked goods (pavlova's yum!)...all in all it's the kind of place that reminds me, in an odd way, of Dean and Deluca in NY, but in minature. This is my favorite weekend sandwich spot. They have a good mix of meat and vegetarian friendly options, and everything is made with fresh whole ingredients. I've had and enjoyed everything on the menu, but i particularly enjoy the rotating line of sandwiches and salads that show up on their chalkboard. WOW if you live in the area and haven't been here yet, you are missing out on an amazing restaurant. Aside from the adorable unique market they have in the corner of their store, everything here is homemade. I couldn't take my eyes off of their pastries the entire time I was there. I'm definitely going back for the peach custard! My boyfriend and I both got the marinated veggie sandwich with their soup of the day which was broccoli cheddar. The bread that came with the sandwich was perfectly toasted--not too hard for the roof of your mouth but just enough crunch and warmth for a party in your mouth. I give this spot 5 stars because of location, quality ingredients, and charm. Theres a park across the street to grab food to go and sit outside. Small gifts to make your grandma proud. I Had the BLT with an over medium egg. Bacon was sweet and spicy. I loved that they offer thanksgiving dishes in advance for the season. Its brilliant. If i lived closer i would be all over this. Coffee is delicious. The employees seem happy and excited to be here. I will say the girl at the register was cold and cut me off when i wanted to order more and just kind of seemed rude. Honestly her specific attitude doesnt rep the rest of the staff, so instead of taking away a star i simply took away her tip. It's a quaint little deli and market. There are tables inside and outside to eat in. They also had snacks and drinks you wouldn't normally find at your local grocery store. I wanted to try this place so I ordered the roast beef sandwich. It was mediocre; wheat bread, lettuce, Swiss cheese, and mayo. I've had better from Wawa and for better price. I also tried their coffee- hazelnut with almond milk. Nothing spectacular about it. I wish Wawa would migrate to LA. *sigh read more

I do think this place is very cute and proximity to the park is great. The sandwiches are decent, the salads aren't bad, but the coffee is not great. Honestly, the espresso drinks are usually scaldingly hot, which is not a good thing. Getting the milk too hot is not adding anything good to the flavor. Neither is burning my tongue... I love the concept of general store and everything looks lovely, I just wish they would work out the coffee issue. I'm going to apologize for my coffee snobbery, but I do think charging premium prices for coffee should guarantee a good latte or cappuccino. I hope they remedy this. I discovered Ginger Corner Market about 3 years ago, and now I seem to end up there almost every day. There's a wide range of amazing pastries, from basic cookies and scones to more elaborate cakes, pies and other treats. They also have great (and inexpensive!) salads and sandwiches, as well as specials that vary from day to day. Sometimes I go there for lunch, and other times just to take a coffee and scone break. It's a wonderful place to read, write or talk with friends, and there's always good music playing. Since it's a block from CalTech, I've ended up in fascinating conversations with astronomers and microbiologists, as well as artists, architects, writers and filmmakers. The owner and staff are delightful, and I always feel welcome there. It's kind of become my home away from home. My only reservation in recommending this hidden gem is that if too many people find out about it, it might get crowded. read more

I like this place. Good coffee, pretty good sandwiches, mellow vibe. Until today. I take my toddler to Grant Park fairly often and we almost always pop in for lunch. Today, when I tried to pay, my credit card got declined, twice. I had just made a payment and checked the balance, so there shouldn't have been a problem. I told the cashier this, but she seemed irritated, and turned the screen towards me to show me that it said declined. She said it - loudly - too. I paid with my debit card. When I picked up my sandwich order, she handed it to me without a word. She seemed pissed off and a bit hostile. I was embarrassed and I guess I got my feelings hurt. Maybe she was just having a bad day, but she didn't treat me well. Again, I know my card should have gone through with no problems, but regardless, I paid my bill and didn't deserve to be treated this way. The other employee, a man, was extra nice to me. I got the feeling he was trying to make up for his co-workers obnoxiousness. I doubt I'll be back. I have better things to do with my time. read more

I really wanted to like this place, but each time I've gone has been disappointing. To be fair, I've tried only their pastries - which all look soooo good but taste so mediocre at best. A couple of days ago I got a scone, and yikes, it was really hard and rubbery. And the taste was incredibly lame! No taste at all, in fact...except for the chocolate chips inside, which I picked out and ate after dumping the hard, rubbery baked dough. So disappointing. What a waste of time and money. I've had their cakes, cookies, you name it. All looked beautiful but tasted just MEH. They sell a good, albeit expensive, European-style yogurt, though. I have been coming to Ginger Corner Market since they opened in the summer of 2012. Located right across from Grant Park and only a block from my condo I have been happily attempting to eat every thing they make. I like coming in for coffee in the mornings. Most of the time the owners daughter is baking or making something good. It's just like walking into someone's mothers kitchen. The aroma of fresh baked maple pecan scones, whole wheat blueberry scones, oatmeal cookies, pumpkin chocolate chip cookies or even warm gingerbread cookies gives me a natural high. I never thought that a whole wheat scone could be so flaky and good. They also make pies and some really great sandwiches. I had their grilled pastrami sandwich with couscous - $7. Was so excited to see Ginger taking over old Eddie's Market space because it is around the corner from where i live and just the type of place I love. Owners are extremely personable as is everyone else who works there. Have ordered the Tuna, Turkey and Pastrami sandwiches, ALL delicious (ask for extra cornichons). The squaw bread is the best! Highly recommend their Jones iced coffee and freshly made teas/lemonades behind the counter. Also, make sure you try one of their scones, you won't regret it. Prices are totally reasonable too for the amount of food you get and definitely well worth it. Looking forward to see them add more and more goodies in the market section, especially more cheeses and charcuterie. Hope they are around for a long long time. read more

What can I say, I love this place. I love having a little corner market / deli in my neighborhood. It's the perfect place to stop by and grab a sandwich and sides to-go for a picnic across the street or to take across town. As a matter of fact, I think next summer, I'll definitely be stopping by there to get some good eats before the Hollywood Bowl. It's quaint, neighborhood'ly and modernly-charming. I've had their turkey sandwich, which sound simple enough, but it's quite refreshing with sliced apple, cheddar and a dijon aioli. I've also had their tuna sandwich that is awesomeness with sliced egg inside too. They have a lot of great little side salads to choose from too, I've had the Orzo and Couscous salads, both tasty. I hate to give a bad review, but the food I ordered here was atrocious. I ordered the kale salad and it was yucky as yuck could be. I get the whole healthy trendy thing, and kale can taste so good in a salad, but this was just a sad fail. On the other hand, try have a really cute setup inside with a shop of various antique items and vintage goodies which is always fun. And it's conveniently located across the street from the park. Alright, the beet salad delivers! Went in with my bf and we shared a beet salad (he complained that there weren't enough beets, but I think I probably just ate most of them because I thought there were plenty!) and a tuna sandwich -- this time on toasted wheat. I found the sandwich to be improved with this modification. And I was informed that it typically comes on sourdough, not Wonder Bread. Various lunchtime visits, about 3-4x month for a while now Time to update! LOVE Ginger. They've upped their game and turned good into great. They've always had great sandwiches and other selections. They solved my concerns from my previous review: they always wear gloves to prep your food and they are nice and friendly to everyone. I was super pumped about this place but I find myself disappointed enough to immediately leave a yelp review. The staff was friendly, the neighborhood great and the interior beautiful. That's it. I ordered the kale salad. It was basically just ripped up pieces of kale, tasteless dressing and a mass of congealed raisins I discovered at the bottom. The bread that came with it was stale. It was served with a plastic fork, which just wrapped up the careless preparation and presentation. I also ordered the watermelon mint lemonade which was fine. A little watery but not horrible. I guess I was just expecting more given the reviews and atmosphere but I left feeling let down and still hungry. read more

Reading the other reviews just now confirms how I was feeling about this place and their bad service. There must've been about 5 employees but none of them were attentive or friendly when walking in. I asked if there was a bathroom and one of the staff members replied No so my kids and I left and walked across to the park. Came back and again no customer service. We ordered 2 sandwiches and the pomegranate lemonade. The sandwiches were good the drink not flavorful at all and watered down as well. The cold atmosphere ruins this cute lil hole in the wall shop. This is a regular of ours - both for their great "home baked" food and drinks - but also to hang for a very friendly chat with the locals (me and my 15 year old Cocker Spaniel dog "Chester" are some of the "locals"). My breakfast favorite is the egg & bacon toasted sandwich (5 stars for tastiness). For lunch I will most often go for a salad - which always seem to have unique ingredients that make them more than your "average" lunch variety you will find elsewhere. The soups are delicious (I've had chilli soup and many others). I will most often (daily) succumb to their in-store baked goodness. There is always a great deal of variety - often "Themed" for the season. Favorites are their banana bread and honey walnut cake. But you can't go wrong with whatever you get. Every one of the staff are super friendly and helpful and I have come to count them all as my good friends having got to know each other over the past couple of years. The owner has gone above-and-beyond what you would ordinarily expect of a neighborhood cafe/market by supporting non-profit fundraising events at the store including one event for the Leukemia & Lymphoma society where we raised over $1000. To me this is an example of a truly exceptional neighborhood cafe/market. read more

Good sandwiches and excellent desserts! Wedge salad: Caramelized bacon basically saves the entire salad.. didn't taste so great after I ran out of bacon. Blueberry cream cake: So so good!! I'm not a huge fan of American pastries since I find them to be too sweet/heavy but this was just the right amount of sweetness and the cream flavor was more subtle. Definitely enough for more than one serving so totally worth it!! Roast beef sandwich: I liked it but I think the combination of the squaw bread + the fact that it was cold bothered me a bit. The sandwich seemed a bit flimsy and didn't make me quite full. The caramelized onions were a great touch though. Ham & brie sandwich: Favorite thing I've had so far! It really hit the spot and the figs are great. Also found out today that they do half sizes so you can combine a half sandwich/half soup for about $7. Was looking for a sandwich shop off the 210 and found this through yelp. As someone else said, the signage was confusing and I would've driven by if my boyfriend hadn't noticed the small sign out front. Positives: -Good unique veggie sandwich: roasted balsamic veggies, goat cheese, pesto. It was very yummy. -Roast beef sandwich had a very good amount of meat on it -Easy parking and park across the street to eat outside Negatives: -Took a significant amount of time to get our sandwiches when there were not many people there -The sides were extremely small - my side of cous cous was like 2-3 bites, not enough. -Bread needed to be toasted or maybe have a selection of different breads. It easily fell apart -Bathroom was out of order? Had to use the gross park bathroom It was a cute little place and if I lived in the area I'd give it another shot, however, when I drive through again I will likely try somewhere else out. read more

The only reason that I'm docking a star is because the service is really slow. Cute little cafe/market. The epitome of hipster just north of Caltech. I'd expect a place like this in Japantown or something, but enjoy how convenient this place is to the college community here (Caltech and PCC). I really loved the fresh lemon/ginger smell when I walked in that came from their fresh lemonade of the day. That was delicious with my roast beef sandwich...also delicious. I must say though that the outside signage was a bit confusing. The building itself doesn't say Ginger but Eddie's Market so that can definitely throw some people off. The only way you can tell it's Ginger is by the folding sign they put out on the sidewalk. Not sure why they don't change the name...probably for historical purposes or something. Dare I say "cute" former corner market that now serves sandwiches, salads, and homemade desserts. This is truly a family owned business because the owners mom and daughter both work here. I ordered the turkey sandwich on wheat with apples and cheddar. It was a good solid sandwich complete with homemake pickled veggies. Love it! I work down the street and live close to Pasadena. I've been here more then once. And I love the atmosphere you get a small town home feel. Not to mention the blues tunes they had in there. Loved it! Customer service has always been good here. And I've ordered the turkey sand which very tasty! At the time I went in they had this amazing lemonade boy was it refreshing, and the salads are amazing as well. I've had the wedge and antipasti, everything was delish.I love how they make everything fresh to order. They also had baked goods in there not were they tempting, I have yet to try which I'm sure I will since I come in often lol, This is my little go to spot. Cute and quaint on the outside, it truly is a corner market. The sandwiches they have are absolutely delicious especially for its simple ingredients that come together in a perfect marriage (not that there is such a thing as a perfect marriage). The bacon in the BLT with egg was bang on. I also got the rooibos tea with milk and honey. The prices on the menu already included tax - I love that; it's a nice surprise whenever that happens, like Christmas but not. I'm gonna get a bike and then bike here on some weekends. read more

What a little gem of a store! I used to go to a corner market in my small town, and Gingers is very similar. It has a cozy/homey feel, a great selection of sandwiches/drinks, & also sells fun novelty items and knick knacks. I just tasted my iced caramel latte...honestly, it is one of the most tasty, creamy drink! Usually iced coffee is so bitter, watered down and baristas never seem to get it just right.
