The Orrorroo Giant Gum Tree is just outside of the Outback town of Orrorroo on the west side, there are brown signs up for it so you won't miss the left turn of to the short gravel road that leads you to the tree and picnic area. Estimated over 500 years old this River Red Gum is the oldest in the area. The tree is a Eucalyptus Carnaldulensis but it also has the name Widow Maker because these kind of trees have the habit of unexpectedly throwing off big branches. The tree is about 34 feet circumference and climbs up about 20 feet before there is a fork in the trunk. The area invites to stay a little, there is parking, tables and a BBQ grill that is free. Along the river are some nice walks. You can also leave your glass or other bottles there and they get the deposit and donate that money to a local child charity. The town of Orrorroo is also worth a look and just a mile away. read more
