GGSTB a 501(c) (3) stands for "God's Gift Sharing the Blessing" and that is what they are about sharing hope and comfort to newly diagnosed and first year survivors of breast cancer. They provide a variety of local services to women and men all over the Washington DC Metropolitan and surrounding areas, recently expanding their message of hope as far as Puerto Rico. Once contacted initially, GGSTB will send a hand written greeting card, pink and white socks, pamphlets on healthy eating, referral services, and support groups in your area, a book by Rachael Clearwater " Dreamwalk: A Survivor's Journey through Breast Cancer" and other nice goodies.
The founder and CEO, Veronica Hilton said that back in 2006 when she was initially diagnosed she received loads of greeting cards with words of encouragement, gift cards, gift packages from coworkers, family and friends. From that point GGSTB was birthed, she wanted women from everywhere to feel that same love and support that she received when 1st finding out she was diagnosed with breast cancer.
GGSTB hosts a prayer line on Saturday mornings starting at 9am Eastern Time. You can check the website and get the number and pin code. Prayer is extended to not only those newly diagnosed and survivors, but also family members, friends, and persons with other types of cancer.
I was invited to GGSTB's first annual prayer breakfast by a friend. The program was hosted at a church in Temple Hills Maryland and when I showed up I did not realize there was a fee of $20. Do you know I scrambled to pull out my debit card at the front desk, only to be greeted with a smile and told to just go in and take a seat? This spiritually powered morning included poetry by survivor Tasha Carter, stories of survival and strength from 1 year and 20 plus year survivors, an inspirational dance team composed of all survivors. I mean I left there feeling so good, just to be in the presence of such strong women warriors supporting and loving each other.
Midway through the program we enjoyed a down home southern breakfast that included scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, grits, fresh fruit, sweet breads, with coffee and juice. The real treat was the keynote speaker Pastor Maria Knock from L.I.V.E Worship Ministries; she talked about a sick woman in Luke 8:43, and how her tireless faith existed in seemingly hopeless times as she dealt with her sickness for 12 years, and through tireless faith and action, one day her healing had finally come. Not to get all preachy on you all, but that Prayer Breakfast had to be one of the best days of my adult life. Unfortunately, as we know everyone is not this fortunate, but for those that are, receiving this extended grace truly is a reason to be grateful and celebrate. GGSTB had no reason to let me in for free. I was simply a guest minus $20. What I experienced on that day was a true act of kindness from women that not only spread a message of sharing hope, but they also live it! read more
