We are regular customers to this restaurant and always recommend friends there. I provided 5 stars in previous reviews. This trip was a total disappointment with inattentive waiter. Food and ambiance are perfect. We waited for a long time before he showed up to take orders. Then he disappeared and waited for a long time to get refill of ice tea. I ended up requested another waiter attending other nearby tables who provided refill. We had to go to concierge to get check. It is a shame as we were there to celebrate my birthday. I was feeling jealous that the next table even had a dessert with lighted candle while we never have an opportunity to request for anything due to the subpar service. i came here at 1-ish on a saturday, so naturally it was very busy. the host said it would be a 5 min wait but they actually ended up forgetting about us! we checked in on our timing at least 15 min later and were seated immediately. this place is NICE; see tablecloths for evidence. i ordered a few things off the specials menu, the apple cider mimosa and the egg nog french toast. they also served complimentary biscuits and cornbread with a mango jam, which i was pleasantly surprised by! the mimosa was very tasty, especially with the cinnamon sugar rim. the egg nog french toast was also really tasty and you could definitely taste the nog. an appropriate amount of syrup was served. although this is a fancy looking place, i think their prices are very reasonable (especially considering the free biscuit). it's also a treat to be able to leave and walk around the museum gift shop. i would definitely recommend this place for any brunch goers. read more

Yelp Fam!!!! While we were out exploring the wonderful BMA I discovered a restaurant within the museum. I made a reservation for Gertrude's! The food & service were very nice. Our server was incredible! She really knew what she was doing , took care of us from the second we sat down. We were given some amazing biscuits and bread. We went with the classic crab cake platters, we were also surprised by the staff because we were celebrating our engagement!!!!! They gave us some sorbet and a very nice message on our plates! The combination of the art of the museum and being able to dine in after our tour was very relaxing! If you are going to the BMA or just enjoy great food give Gertrude's a try! read more

A stop here is the perfect way to end a trip to the Baltimore Museum of Art. After an afternoon at the museum, we had a reservation to come here for an early dinner and had a lovely time. The ambiance is warm and inviting while being beautifully elegant. The staff members were friendly and helpful. Service was fast but we didn't feel rushed. The menu offered a variety of Chesapeake classics with a contemporary touch. We were delighted to start off with our own plates of bread. The cornbread had the perfect balance in texture. The lamb meatballs with yogurt sauce paired with caramelized onions and fig into the perfect bite. The dishes we tried were overall good with quality ingredients. We wished the fries had been crispy and for an extra sprinkle of salt over each dish but otherwise were satisfied. I came in to grab a salad and an Old Fashioned before going into the museum and the seafood salad was to die for. It wasn't overly saturated with dressing and the freshness was not to be played with. I was beyond pleased with my meal. And the service was so swift. I was in and out fairly quickly. The ambiance is chill and they have a lot of REAL plants. That was something I appreciated a lot. We came here for restaurant week and it was our first time visiting. The staff were very friendly and the service was incredible - it was pretty busy but we were served quickly all night. We chose the special menu with the wine pairing - it was a fantastic deal for the price. We ordered Orange Blushes to start and they were so refreshing and delicious. I love this place! It was our first time here and we decided it's our new girls night spot. The ambiance, scenery, staff and food are all perfect. We got a few appetizers and shared them just to try a little bit of everything. Nothing disappointed. The Bee Hoss Buffalo Cauliflower shocked all of us how wonderful it was. As for the crabcakes they are both delicious but Gertie's definitely wins. I also suggest the cream of crab soup....superb. BTW, Wednesdays they have half off wine; bottles and glasses. Stop by Gertrude's on your way to the BMA. You won't be sorry. (And if anyone from Gertrude's reads this, please let me know where you got your flatware from. After talking about it for years, my wife and I finally made it to Gertrude's for my birthday. We had a reservation, so when we arrived all we had to do was give our name, get our temp taken, and then they got us right to our table. With the nice weather we really enjoyed sitting in the patio next to the fountains. Lots of fresh air and distance between tables helped us feel comfortable about having our masks off. Our server was lovely. She took our orders and brought out complementary biscuits and corn bread. Both were tasty, but the jam really stole the show. For mains, I got an omelet (one of the specials) and my wife got the Turkey Benedict. My omlet and included salad were good, but it was a bit light for me. I kinda wished I had ordered a side, but it was nice to walk away from a brunch not feeling sleepy :p I think my favorite thing was the home fries that came with my wife's meal. I'm usually ambivalent about home fries, but these were nice and crispy and perfectly seasoned. Would go back for that alone. After lunch was finish our server brought us a very tasty sorbet as a birthday treat. Overall I couldn't have asked for a better birthday brunch. Will definitely be back again! read more

I really used to love this place but unfortunately it has gone downhill. Their menu has expanded but the service is really lacking. Not only was the service extremely slow, but I had to get up and ask for someone to come to our table and was made to feel like a huge inconvenience for even doing so. Our server was also not apologetic at all, spilled a drink on one of our entrees and didn't even acknowledge it, and continued to show poor service throughout the evening. The food was just OK as others have already said. There are much better places in the area so please do not waste your money here unless you want to pay for horrendous, rude service. Had a dinner here after a visit to the Baltimore Museum of Art. Made reservations beforehand as dinner is reservation only now. Service: attentive, appetizers served qucikly, but entrees and desserts took quite some time. Probably because customers began pouring in as we finished our appetizers. Appetizers and Soup---- Cream of crab: good soup. Creamy, packed with crab flavor, not too starchy. Went well with the complimentary bread. Raw oysters: variety changes everyday. We had two varities from Virginia today. One was creamy and crisp, the other rich in flavor and heavy in seawater saltiness. Very satisfied. Entree---- Had the steak frites myself. Requested medium. Steak came in a bit dry and overcooked, but seasoning was alright. Teres Major steak is not among the more expensive cuts alright, but I would expect a much better steak. My companion suggested the signature crab cake tasted good. The Tilghman Island platter came with generous portions of fried chicken and crab cake, but the best item seemed to be the potato salad. Desserts--- Not sure if the menu changes daily. The candybar was way too sweet, probably used too much toffee. The other item that I forgot the name of was also too sweet and slightly mushy. The only satisfactory item was the mango Sorbet, not overwhemlingly sweet and intensive mango flavor. Overall: I actually had several visits before this one, but I chose to write one today mainly because this was the first time I came here after the pandemic, and I had hoped the place would lift it above the initial review I gave several years back. I have been here three times and always have difficulty remembering the food. That's probably not the best indication, but I always remember the other things, such as the intimate atmosphere, the wine specials, the great adult beverages (summer 75 had me on my butt after only half of the first drink!!! Yasssss!), the beautiful sculptures, and the soothing background sounds of rushing waters from the fountain that compliments a serene, outdoor dining experience. If, for nothing else, take in the views, enjoy a delicious cocktail, and a sweet escape. The food is good... never great from my memory, but satisfying. I want to love every restaurant I go to, I am a foodie. Haven't been to Gertrude's in a very long time. Thiis evening I remember why. Chef Shields calls this southern Chesapeake cooking. It is not. I'm from the south and the Chesapeake area. Good stuff my drink was delicious after the ice melted a bit. My oysters were sweet , fresh and very tasty. Not so good. My soup was okay except for the tree trunk hunk of basil or tarragon I bit into. Hidden in the puree. The hush puppies need another name. Nobody but John Shields puts powdered sugar on a hush puppy. They were more like fluffs. Not much cornmeal, very little onion and wanted to salt it after I scraped off the sugar. What bread pudding is served without a sauce? I could have caramel but i had to ask forit. Banana was actually hard dry, dry dry. . Didn't finish anything but the oysters and my drink.. Sigh. read more

I visited here today. This was my second time here. Because it was Sunday, nearby street parking was free which is nice. There is a parking lot at the location but I'm not sure of the cost. The waitress showed great customer service and was attentive. We didn't feel rushed. The atmosphere is very nice and if you sit outside you have a nice view. I've enjoyed my food both visits. We were really looking forward to eating at Gertrudes for the Thurs night special--$20. There were 6 or 7 entrees to chose from but the chef would not make one without garlic or onion so we ended up spending $40 not $20 for our dinner. The odd thing is that the chef would make salmon plain for the more expensive meal but not for the Thurs night special even though it was one of the entrees. This is false advertising and shoddy business practice. In addition, our expensive entrees and side dishes were so heavily salted and prepared with butter that we had GI upset for 48 hours--we are not sure if this was due to the seasoning, spoiled food, or both. Oh man, I love Gertrude's at the Baltimore Museum of Art. We came here for brunch a couple of Sundays ago. First, I like to walk around the museum for 45 minutes to an hour to revisit some old friends aka works of art I have enjoyed looking at my entire life. Then, you have to look at the gift shop which is truly one of the best places to shop for unique and cool gifts for yourself and others. And then there is Gertrudes! They were filled but we were able to snag two seats at the bar. We ordered the blueberry lavender pancakes and the eggs benedict. The eggs benedict were amazing and possibly the best I have ever had. The home fries were delish. The pancakes were also...amazing. Is it cheap food? No. But the service from our bartender was really great. Also, there was a duo on piano and flute/clarinet that provided some wonderful Sunday jazz in the background. I am looking forward to coming back here again. Gertrude's is one of my favorite fancy-schmancy restaurants for special occasions. Located in the sculpture garden of the BMA, Gertrude's transports you with its interesting art installations, trickling fountains, and canopied tents. The menu features new American fare with a Baltimore twist. You can be sure to find some delicious cream of crab soup, Maryland crab soup, fresh fish, and rumor has it they even do a lobster special on select nights in August. Every time I've come here the service has been solid and the food was always good. Prices are definitely on the more expensive side but it's worth it for what you get in atmosphere. The last time I was at the BMA I tried to snag a table outside at Gertrude's but unfortunately it was closed due to a private event (pretty cool you can rent out that beautiful space for events). Definitely make a reservation in advance! I hope to be back to Gertrude's sometime soon! read more

Outdoor seating + Gertrude's = the perfect Sunday morning :) This is such a cute place for a girl's brunch, bridal shower, baby shower, birthday gathering or a wedding. We enjoyed Gertude's for brunch. We stopped in on a Sunday afternoon. It was busy but not crowded. Our server was sweet but a bit neglectful. Once we were able to order we started with cocktails. 2 people ordered Mimosas (unfortunately they're not bottomless). My friend tried the Dirty Gertie (Tito Vodka Bloody Mary with claim juice and Old bay Shrimp), sounds a bit odd but it was tasty. I tried the Negroni in the Garden which is a Baltimore Spirits Shot Tower Gin, Capitaoline White Vermouth, Campari Liqueur and a orange twist. I did not like that one at all but got it down I opted for mimosas thereafter. We of us started with the Caesar Salad, served with anchovies and their signature dressing - There was nothing special about the salad or the signature dressing. One person tried the Country Breakfast Platter - 2 eggs prepared however you like, skillet home fries, choice of breakfast meat. If you chose turkey sausage, you only get one but it's a nice size and it is GOOD. My other friend ordered the same entrée but with smoked bacon. Third girlfriend ordered the Crabmeat Omelet with sherried mushrooms. Gruyere cheese and home fries. Delicious! Lastly, I ordered the 1/2 sandwich (Shrimp Salad Po'Boy) and a cup of Cream of Crab soup. Lots of lump crab and sooo flavorful. I received an email about a special Gertrude's is running all August 2019, where you can get a lobster dinner for $30 (or lobster with crab imperial for $35) on Thursdays. Seemed like a deal so I made a reservation. I should have read my email better as I should have called the restaurant to not only reserve the table, but to reserve lobsters. Luckily, despite me not doing that, I was still able to have a lobster dinner. This was all in part to my waitress, who was SUPER AWESOME! I wish I'd gotten her name. Apparently she harassed the cook to come up with some lobsters for my friend and me after she saw how crestfallen we were about not reserving them. She tended to all of our needs and just had an all around sweet and sunny attitude. In addition to the crab dinner, we ordered poutine to share and I had a glass of rosé, both were EXCELLENT. The lobster...well, I just don't think I'm a fan of lobster. The whole inside was covered in what I thought was poop, but what is actually the lobster's liver. Either way, it grossed me out, but it's just a personal preference and doesn't factor into my review. The middle rating comes from the sides. The lobster dinner came with a baked potato, corn on the cob, and coleslaw. Potato seemed undercooked and only came with sour cream. No butter? No chives? Nothing? No butter came with the corn, and it was pretty bland on its own. And the coleslaw didn't have any mayo in it, seemed particularly vinegary, which I don't like. Not sure if they were trying to cut corners because lobster is so expensive, and they're doing this deal. But how hard is it to cook a potato? And provide butter for food items that are eaten with butter? read more

I went to Gertrude this past weekend with a group of friends. I had no idea that this restaurant was located in the museum. The wait staff was friendly and they helped us make really good choices from the menu. You receive a biscuit and a square of cornbread with butter and jam when you're seated. The biscuits was amazing, especially warm. The cornbread was dry. The only saving grace for the cornbread was the jam they gave. The waiter refilled our biscuits as we waited for our meal since it was taking a little while. I ordered the stack of pancakes and had their maple sausage and eggs as sides. The sausage was flavorful and had the right amount of thickness. The eggs were fluffy and barely needed any additional salt. I didn't put any, but others in my party added salt in pepper to theirs. The pancakes were fluffy and had good flavor. I took most of my meal home, and it was still good when I reheat it. For a drink, I had the passion fruit mimosa. It was a little more juice than champagne than I would like but I enjoyed it. One of the ladies had the espresso with Baileys and she said it was really strong and she enjoyed it. The ambiance is great. The staff are welcoming. The service is timely. However, I think Gertrude's doesn't pack the bang for the buck. To start, they brought out cornbread and biscuits. Maybe it's because I'm from the south, but they tasted like Pillsbury Grands and Jiffy Mix. Not good. Next, I ordered a hummus plate. The hummus itself was very good. The only kinda bad part were the overly soft kalamata olives. For my meal, I ordered the deep fried catfish and the portions were plentiful, but the home fries were bland and the fish tasted hardly seasoned. It's definitely a place I would visit again if I had an event, but more so for the atmosphere than the really average food. read more

Atmosphere: Gertrude's is located inside the Baltimore Museum of Art and has a bit of a slight upscale vibe, while still retaining a semblance of a neighborhood/familiar eatery. Service: the service was great! All of the staff had an energetic, positive attitude which only enhances the overall experience! Food didn't take long to come out and it was easy to waive down the server for anything of want. Food: the food is absolutely lovely. The portion sizes are also SUPER generous. I totally came in hungry and left with no room to spare, but I did have a good serving of leftovers. Well-seasoned and good textures really do bring a delightful meal. Located inside the Baltimore museum of Art, Gertrude's on a Friday evening featured live music from a guitar and flute player (with some background music). Was a very nice atmosphere. Parking was plentiful, and got a reservation for 4 only a couple hours earlier for 6:30. Started with the crabby poutine - think crab dip on top of fries. So what could be wrong there?!! Fries weren't soggy, and crab/artichoke dip had a nice flavor. For dinner I split the Gertie's crab cake, and winter salad. The crab cake lived up to the hype. A slightly different version, but didn't stray far from the Baltimore way. Lump meat throughout, and great flavor. The salad left a bit to be desired...plenty of arugula, but a bit skimpy on the accompaniments. It served its purpose though. Solid meal, and great service. Would definitely go back. read more

Gertrude's has been my go-to place for an upscale night that won't break the bank for a year now. I recently visited for the third time this week when I booked my graduation dinner to be held here. First of all, the ambiance with the outdoor seating in the sculpture garden is beautiful, and the indoor seating features lovely lighting and large windows that allow you to look out on the garden even if there are no spots left outside (as was the case during my latest visit). Also, the Tuesday $30 3 course dinner special is second to none! A lot of great options: I chose the cream of crab soup, the seafood asparagus risotto, and the candy bar for dessert. Let me start the food review stating that it's called Gertrude's Chesapeake Kitchen for a reason--these people know how to do seafood. Others in my party had the seafood salad and crab cakes, and all of our meals were AMAZING! Also, the dessert selection was so expansive and appetizing that it was so hard to just choose one! However, I had to go with the staple candy bar because it's truly an original dish that can't be beat. Also, the server recognized it was my graduation celebration and even brought me a complimentary glass of champagne and wrote "Congratulations" on my dessert--a special touch that didn't go unnoticed. The nonalcoholic fruit ades were delicious, but at $4 should have been served in a tall glass, not iced in a wine glass. My Gertrude's crab cake was a major disappointment. Of course you order crab in Baltimore, but there was very little discernable crab meat lost in the gluey stuffing. Way overpriced (the price of a pound of lump crabmeat in bulk). Even allowing for fully justifiable costs of production, 2 ounces of crab doesn't translate to the cost of a bulk pound. I've eaten at Gertrude's several times before and been impressed, today was very disappointing. read more

I went to Gertrude's to attend a Gallentine's Day brunch hosted by a friend. I've been to the Baltimore Art Museum before but never noticed the restaurant. The food, drinks and service were great. I ordered the French toast and mimosa flights. The French toast was good and a large serving. It was a little soggy as there was too much cream cheese and syrup. I enjoyed my mimosas too. They come as a set of three, one cranberry vanilla one apple spice and one pomegranate. Not a fan of pomegranate so I asked for two cran vanilla. The server was upset by this stating that I was making her bartender upset with my request. Ma'am. They're getting paid and so are you. It's not like I'm asking you to change the ingredients to the drinks. That was a little annoying but whatever. For dessert they brought out macarons that were delicious. Unfortunately, only a set number of macarons are prepared per day so you can't order more. The pastry chef comes in, does their thing and clocks out. Must be nice. The food was average in my opinion. I ordered a salad with shrimp which only contained 5 shrimp, 1 1/2 tomato cut in half and 3 cucumber slices. Definitely not worth the price for the size and amount. I also ordered skillet potatoes which were okay, not sure if they were actually cooked in a skilled or in the oven. I guess the best part is the convienance of being able to eat in the museum before/after seeing the beautiful exhibits. read more
