Great place for fresh fruit, produce, and all of the things that remind of you of what your grandmother had in her kitchen.

Hong Kong Market -- 5…read more Located inside my favorite place on earth... and no, Disney World cannot compete. This is THE best international market in the Greater New Orleans area. Tucked inside is their bánh mì spot--the Vietnamese po-boy--and baby... it's a staple. Open daily, and you'll usually catch the same sweet older woman back there faithfully whipping out sandwiches like clockwork. It's something about that consistency and care that just hits different. They're under new management now and the space got a little upgrade, so I'm not sure if everything is exactly the same menu-wise, but my go-to has always been the one with meatballs--and I ALWAYS add extra pâté. That pâté? Don't skip it. The bread is exactly what it needs to be. Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside... not too hard, not too soft. Perfect balance. Prices went up just a little, but honestly? For about $7, you're getting a full, loaded sandwich that eats like a meal and then some. Still one of my favorite quick eats. Every time I'm in there, I'm grabbing one.

A shopping treasure on the Westbank, especially if you are searching for those hard-to-find Asian…read moreproducts (most abundant choices: Vietnamese, Chinese, Latin-American, but they have a good selection of Middle Eastern, Japanese and Indian items as well). This is a vegan paradise, as they have my beloved tofu skin (yuba), soy curls, all the tofu varieties you could ever want and a variety of fake meats, wheat gluten goodies and even vegan jerky. Prices are impressively low. It's been over 10 years since my last review and the market has grown so much. We spent an hour in here today and noticed they have a good sake collection, as well as Asian beers. Boba/tapioca pearls, teas, coffees, spices, desserts... an entire aisle devoted to soup bases, noodles, dried mushrooms! Pinch me, because I think I'm dreaming. I'm in hot chile heaven. There was one thing that my husband wanted that we couldn't find. One of the sweetest ladies at the cash register tried her best to help, even with a slight language barrier we were able to show her the product (dried bonito flakes). She showed him dried squid but that wasn't quite the same thing. I think they have less Japanese products, not really a big deal at all. We so appreciated her kind efforts. Bonus: the cute statue collection by the entrance! Buddhas, lucky cats... even Hello Kitty herself is represented. Consider this market for unique gifts. They even sell Cafe du Monde coffee!

This is an interesting farmers market with an eclectic mix of fresh food, meat, seafood, bread,…read morefresh shucked oysters, homemade sausage, art, soaps, jerky, jewelry, dog treats, fresh cracklin', jellies & salad dressings, honey, vinegars, local coffee and tea, fresh pretzels, fresh juice drinks, desserts and fresh shrimp cocktails. I'm sure I'm leaving something out, but you get the drift. Obviously the selection changes every week, but you get to know your favs. Parking is generally available, though you may have to drive around or walk a block or two - at least it's free on weekends. Bank to get cash is close by, but most vendors take Venmo now; some take credit cards. You've got to get out of bed - might as well make the morning a good experience. :)

They have some freshly prepared food you can order and eat here and then other things that are packaged you can eat now or later. There are also many arts and crafts to enjoy and then an interesting selection of various other books, crafts and knickknacks. It does seem to be pretty variable here as I've been here when they had lots of amazing things and other times where the selection was blah. I've enjoyed some great live music here and then just had pretty blah times. The good news is this market is located right in downtown Gretna so there are lots of good options to eat and drink at in the area so if you arrive on a less than optimal market day there is still plenty to keep you occupied.

This unassuming spot in a strip mall was gorgeous inside. And it serves coffee, pastries, ice cream plus y'know candy. AND they roast their own nuts, spices and I guess coffee beans. There were definitely folks hanging out and enjoying a Turkish style coffee... I guess either the caffeine doesn't hit them the way it does me or they had no plans to sleep. The candy isn't labeled 100% correctly but you kind of know that gummy worms are not gummy strawberries. I tried an assortment bag of gummies and some of chocolates and the price was by the pound. Re got some freshly roasted unsalted cashews and they were delicious! Parking is easy in the strip mall lot. And as you step in you definitely leave Louisiana and step into another country.

They also carry some gummy and chocolate varieties, some spices, some boxed coffee, some Middle Eastern pastries. Only some things were labeled with either what it was or the price of it, so that was a little disorienting. I was surprised to find a cafe and gelato bar inside. The gelato flavors were incredible. I settled on popcorn caramel and baklava in a waffle bowl. An employee said that everything was made in-house. The price was standard considering that all was made there. The service was weird. I kept getting served after people who'd gotten there after me. My ice cream scoops were significantly smaller than my boyfriend's. Returning isn't high on my list of priorities, but I'm glad I tried them.
