Me and the boyf have been determined to buy all our fruit and veg from here because it's yummy and local and they're the only one I know of that accept Bristol pounds. We are starting to juice too and this would be costing a lot more if we were buying from a supermarket. There's something really satisfying and almost smug about buying really fresh, a little bit more grubby and wonky, and a whole lot more delicious produce from the greengrocers! They also do little extra treats like jam and chutney!

Here you'll find wonky carrots, dirty potatoes and odd shaped oranges; just how the come out of the ground (or tree) and how they should be. Gardeners Patch sell pretty much any standard fruit and veg you would want. You wont find too much international out of the ordinary, but you will find inspiration if you're trying to think of a meal to cook. The staff are really nice and very helpful. I asked lots of potato related questions: best for mashing, roasting etc and they were happy to help. I've by a weeks worth (2 bigs bags) of fruit and veg for less than £10 each time I go. They accept Bristol Pounds and 'Text to Pay'

I like to saunter along, barter with the chirpy market folk and pick up various things for my tea - buffalo mozzarellla, honey, jam, crumbly bread and slabs of fresh meat. The focus is on fresh food from local producers; its the farmers themselves that are selling you the goods. There's more or less everything you could imagine finding on a farm, with highlights including the various organic meat stalls (v. expensive) and the fruit stalls later in the summer, when you can get some of the recent strawberry crop People know about their goods and love to talk about it. This isn't a supermarket experience and people are keen to have a chat - it's a bit like being in the countryside, funnily enough. It runs on a Wednesday, so if you're working in the city centre (it's based by St. Nicholas Market on Corn Street) treat yourself in your coffee/lunch break and pick up some crusty bread and cheddar cheese. You'll feel much better than you would queueing up with the other suits, even if it does cost a little bit more.

The price is fantastic and I truely hope that the supermarkets don't squash this shining beacon of what is so great about buying local produce. The front of the shop is red lettering and white background and is listed as 'Fruit market' above the exite and 'EAST STREET fresh fruit and veg' above the entrance - please take note, we can't be doing with people ruining thier perfect system!

Its not a middle class farmers market, its a proper old fashioned market, with fresh and delicious smelling and tasting fruit at bargain prices. It also has a gorgeous array of plants for sale out front. I keep being tempted by them but am usually on my bike when I go to the market. In a world where local supermarkets sell overpriced bland fruit and veg grown in far flung corners of the world it is encouraging to see such a fantastic market still surviving despite the large Asda down the road. Its got character, cheap prices and delicious produce. Well worth turning your nose up at the inferior supermarket produce and taking the extra stroll up East Street to get some tasty treats. Craving some fresh strawberries now!!

The food trucks / shops are especially this eclectic range from Caribbean to Turkish and everything in between. If I have one complaint, it's that the market closes up at 5pm on a Saturday and I wish it would stay open later! There's two special quirks about this building that are especially also worth checking out; 1) The clock has an extra minute hand! That's apparently a remnant of the train friendly Victorian days, when Bristol had its own time zone that was different from Greenwich Medium time which is what the London trains would run. 2) if you look up towards the ceiling in the main hall, the sculptures of the heads all look towards the middle, except for two which are turning their heads to look at each other. Rumour has it this is because those two women were the wife and mistress of the building's architect! I very much enjoyed checking out this market! Yelp 161/ 2019

They are also one of the cheapest meal options in St Nicks Market at around £2.80 for an amazing sausage baguette with leeks, onions, mustard and red (eugh) or brown (yay!) sauce. You can also mix and match your sausages, so if like me you can't choose between the lamb or pork (with cider and mustard) you can just get both. I think the pork wins it, but only by a nose (or a snout, weyhey, I thank you!). The man who owns the sausage shop is so lovely and welcoming. I have eaten a lot of his sausages (...er) and this has never changed; he's never had an off day being a nice guy. The sausage sandwiches/baguettes are quite hard to manoeuvre into your mouth, because the sausages are so big and juicy, so there is the option to have sausage and mash. This is a great option for lunch as it's so filling you are sorted until tea time.

But you gotta ask for it. As a Brit and a Bristolian, I have to say that this is about as good as it gets. However, I feel compelled to write one extra thing though. Although the quality of their pies is beyond question. I have to admit that it's not the sort of thing that most people would serve up at home. Normally, there's your pie, then there's your potatoes and veggies, all served in dollops, sort of, kind of, approximately. The presentation at Pie Minster is different. If my Mum served me a pie dinner with the same sort of presentation that Pie Minister does, I'd think that my Mum had gone off her rocker. However, what Pie Minster does is definitely a very good second best. Another thing, at £8.50 as the normal price for the Mothership, I have to say that there's plenty of other ways to spend a lot less (like a fiver or so) and get a half way decent Indian/Chinese/whatever. However, those are take away meals and at least at Pie Minister, you can sit down. They also have a "frequent visitor" type card. The card is free, and you just get it stamped every time you buy a pie and/or hot drink. Once you've reached the required total (9 I think), you get a free pie/hot drink. They also do takeaway but no-one in your office will be your friend if you make them smell such deliciousness when they only have a ham sandwich and a packet of low fat crisps.
