I went to see the Pitman Painters here and it was nice to see a play which is about a group of…read moreartists that formed in a small mining town in another small town, felt slightly closer to the source than I would say in central Manchester or London. It's not the most amazing play or production I've ever seen but it was funny and interesting (I did not know anything about the Ashington Group before I went). The theatre is a good size for a small town as it doesn't take too many people to fill it up but there's still a generous staging space. As others have said the staff are very nice and the toilets hilariously small! I'll definitely keep an eye out for more things on here, it's really easy to get to with the tram stops Oldham Mumps and Oldham Central nearby.

Visited the lovely Oldham town centre recently- we had got off the bus at the main station and were…read morelooking for the Coliseum. And no-one knew where it was and I mean, we asked four or five different people. Thank god it was on the bus stop map (and we were headed in the right direction anyway) because none of the other signs thought to point to it until we were almost at the door anyway. We quickly discovered that the only people who visit the Oldham Coliseum, at least for the dark melo-drama that we were viewing, are pensioners. Who probably wouldn't be out at night unless going to a play... The theatre itself is surprisingly big - you see it from the street and imagine it quite cosy inside but it does look quite impressive lit up at night, banners waving in the wind. There are stalls and a circle (almost empty when we went) and an impressively large stage. Let down a little by their little refreshments and programme stand as soon as you walk in and tiny, not very nice toilets. The staff were really friendly as we picked up our tickets, pointing out the aisle for our seats and as we were leaving. All in all, an old school venue for some good old fashioned fun (that could do with a lick of paint).

You want to watch a tribute band? You go to the Witchwood. You just look at the line-up for the…read moreweek and find yourself tittering at all the creative names on the bill, from The Clone Roses to Fink Ployd, Kinda Kinks to Who's Next. I'd love to be a fly on the wall when they're making up these monikers in band meetings. Did you know that tribute bands make a heck of a lot of money? I have a lot of musician friends, one of whom packs away shedloads drumming for a Status Quo copy. You'd be surprised, but people absolutely love bands that try to look like and/or play the songs of other people. Is there a Meat Loaf tribute in the UK called Malt Loaf? Please let there be. In fact I'm Googling it. YES! http://www.myspace.com/maltloaftribute How truly fantabulous. I'm veering off the point slightly. Let me gather my thoughts. I've seen a few in my time, but my favourite FAVOURITE act at the Witchwood (apart from the support band I was actually there to see) was Ironically Maiden. Once I'd finished giggling myself into my Southern Comfort it was a definite bonus to watch them. I think part of the fun of tribute bands is that they're very tongue-in-cheek, so there's a comedy element to some of the performances... well, certainly in Ironically Maiden's case, that much is for sure. Leather pants and huge onstage mascots aside, the Witchwood is a great little pub in the centre of Ashton. It's perfect for live music and has a pleasant outdoor area. It turns into a club on a Friday night, open until 3am with free admission before 10pm AND a free bar. You're spoiling us! The drinks in general here are very reasonably priced, and it considers itself a real ale pub, so if you happen to be in the area, pop in for some entertaining music. You won't regret it.

Entry was (and apparently still is) free and the DJ, Tom Smith (still there, I checked!) was really fun! The Witchwood is a wonderful live music venue, too. Although it's a pretty small place, there's a good sized stage, which has seen loads of touring, tribute and local bands play over the years. It's a particularly good place to catch old punk bands there always seems to be at least one scheduled to play here! UK Subs are lined up at the moment. If you prefer something a little quieter than a gig or clubnight, there's also a separate bar at the front of the building, which has some great real ales. It's a lot calmer than the chaos of the backroom and you get a really interesting mix of people going in. Like most of the people who work here, all the bar staff are lovely, and the booze is very reasonably priced.
