Killer haircut! Great staff, great music and a killer vibe. All on Tower street downtown Centralia.

I've had my hair cut twice at Gent, the first in Dec 2023, and again in Dec 2024. I would've had a third experience in June 2024, but they canceled on me the day of my appointment so I can only speak to the quality of two haircuts at Gent. At my first haircut I presented my usual photograph that use--a pic of me from around a year ago with the exact length of hair that I like, sporting some luscious curly bangs. I was immediately told that my hair is too long in the photo to be wearing that style. Weird thing to say to a new customer but alright I guess. I told her that the style at that length is what I like and she shrugged saying that she'd make it work. I walked away from this cut with my hair 2-3 inches shorter than in the photograph and with my bangs cut into a triangular shape. Definitely not at all what I had requested or shown her on my phone. I left Gent feeling dread knowing that the nearest, most convenient hairdresser had served up a disappointing clip. For the next year I would return to my original stylist back in my hometown, telling her of the awful haircut that I received at Gent. Eventually, almost a full year later, I found myself getting shaggy and in need of a quick haircut before a family event. With my hometown stylist all booked up, I begrudgingly scheduled another appointment at Gent, specifically requesting a different stylist than the one who has messed me up the first time. The second haircut did not go any better. This second stylist had the same issue of looking at the image I provided, then completely ignoring what I had requested. Though, at the very least the first stylist at Gent could claim to have tried to style my hair as it appeared in the picture, but the second failed to even do that. Dumbfounded, I left Gent with a flat center part. I refused to even let my girlfriend see me before getting in the shower and washing out the product that the stylist had used. How this happened at all is beyond me. Isn't it the stylist's job to style your hair as you request? Gent is 0/2 in terms of quality of haircut, and 0/3 in terms of experience. Now, they didn't leave me with haircuts that made me feel like I needed to immediately flee to another stylist or shave my head, so I can't rightfully give them 1/5 stars. However, I have only felt ignored at Gent. Now, I don't think the issue is that the stylists are women, as some other reviews may have you believe. The real issue lies with their ability to listen and quality of work. I just don't think these stylists are all that well trained. And that is especially egregious considering the ludicrous price attached to these appointments that don't even leave you with your hair looking remotely how you requested ($39, then $49). I do recommend their Pomp Sea Salt spray though! I barely trust them to grab the bottle for me when I ask to buy it, but the product itself is really good! read more

November 20, 2018 One blistering cold Tuesday at 12:30 PM, I sat down at GENT Cuts and Grooming, expecting to be treated like a gentleman and given an amazing haircut. Instead, I was denied a haircut and left feeling like I didn't belong there. I showed up on time for my appointment. I had visited the Edina location over the summer, but since they were booked that day, I found an opening in the city. It was a bit further, but I had intended to get an amazing haircut for days and wanted something as soon as possible. For $39, I expected quality, and that's what I had gotten the last time I was here. I've received amazing haircuts for much less of course, but I was going for something a bit more stylish than usual. I wanted an undercut and felt most comfortable doing it here. Four minutes after I sat down, a brown-skinned woman roughly 32-39 years of age greeted me. I sat down in the chair and explained what I was looking for. I showed her pictures of the undercut style I wanted. I also wanted her opinion, as I knew the haircut could be a bit risky, especially with my wavy and floppy hair, which doesn't respond to product too well. "Should I just do a regular blended cut?" I asked her. She declined to provide an opinion, yet, shortly afterwards told me my hair wasn't long enough for an undercut (incorrect). I was confused and asked her again if I should just get a blended cut--the safe option. No, she said, we can proceed with the disconnected look. "We need to get going...I have back-to-back appointments" she informed me. My bad, I thought to myself. I definitely could have explained things faster but I wanted this haircut to be bomb, so the details are important to me. I wasn't 100% sure how to explain the haircut at first as I haven't received a cut like this in years. But after five minutes I felt we had it figured out. She put the apron on finally, and I popped a quick before-selfie. She was in the photo so she requested I take another one without her in it, which delayed things about 5 more seconds on this busy day. "How often do you do undercuts?" I asked. "Often" she replied, feigning confidence. As she started analyzing my hair, she asked me to confirm my part line, as it was actually on the opposite side to where it was parted, due to the length, which I explained to her. I then proceeded to show her exactly where the part should be on the other side. I explained to her clearly that once upon a time, a lady set the part line too high, and it ruined my hair for three months. This was crucial for me to explain. She then told me, with a strange bug-eyed look: "I'm uncomfortable cutting your hair, because I don't think I can meet your expectations." What expectations? I thought to myself. It was an undercut. There are no fades. It's shorter on the top, and the same length pretty much on the sides. "Well I drove a half-hour here, and as I told you, I'm willing to try this." She insisted that she didn't want to cut my hair. She offered me a gift card, but it seemed strange. "Did she not like me?" I thought to myself. I did frown in the mirror thinking of what to say when she told me my hair wasn't long enough for an undercut. I think my frown was offensive but I frown when I think. As she gave me the giftcard she demanded I delete the before-selfie I took of myself right before she put on the apron. "Um, I will, once I take my phone out again," I practically stuttered, in disbelief. With that weird wide-eyed look and the fake smile, the front for her anxiety, she demanded I delete it right there. "That's kind of unprofessional," I said, as I pulled out my phone and deleted it in front of her, showing her my phone. "There was another one too right?" she continued. "Yes but you're not in it." I realized afterwards she was afraid I might post this review. I had no other use for her picture on my phone so I found it strange she'd ask. As she prepared the gift card, she recommended a woman at the other location, and told me: "and when you go there just tell them you'll need extra time." "Nope" I said with a straight face. "What?" "I have never had someone fail to understand my instructions." "OK! Here is your giftcard!" she explained with that fake smile again. It communicated: "get out of here!" I gave the gift card away as I won't ever be back here. Below is a picture of her and of the cut I got hours later somewhere else. * * * What led to this review was ultimately a failure to take responsibility for one's wrongs. Having the audacity to tell me she is "uncomfortable" is pathetic. A man would never do that. Having the delusion that the experience is my fault is otherworldly. The haircut took less than 50 minutes at the other spot I went to, including shampooing and adding product. I will try a real barber next time and avoid these hipster salons, and of course, only work with male barbers. 0 stars. read more

I just walked in to find a good shaving cup. I have never had my hair cut there. I have to say that the receptionist/salesperson was very nice and attentive. Even though I spent more than I wanted, I am very happy with their product. If you need a high quality razor and such, don't hesitate to stop by and check them out! read more

Not a fan of this "high-end" barbershop. For the positives: the hairdressers here do an excellent job adhering to COVID-appropriate policies and were generous in giving me a free hair product to take home. Unfortunately, the hairdresser that I had simply didn't know how to cut my thick Asian hair. I showed her an inspiration picture and she kind of went off script and gave me something that did not resemble it in the slightest. She ended up cutting way too much hair off, and I had to go to a different place to get it fixed up. To her credit, she spent a lot of time trying to make it look right - I believe that she was just inexperienced in cutting my particular type of hair. The price tag here is hefty - like $50 pre tip. I won't be back until they get someone who can cut Asian hair. read more

I made an appointment online which was easy. I got there a few minutes before my appointment and was in a chair right on time. My barber (Erika) was friendly, outgoing, and did a great job cleaning up my beard and making it look 10 times better. I plan to go back at least once a month to keep it maintained by the professionals. read more

Since I work downtown, I was looking for a new place to get my haircut vs. running around trying to find an opening or walking in to a Great Clips or Fantastic Sam's. So glad I turned to Yelp for reviews because this place came up first. The fantastic reviews from everyone had me interested so I went online, signed up, and booked with Lisa, also because of her reviews. First things first, it's got that old school dark wood thing going on, like an old bar. Relaxing comforting and familiar. Secondly, any place that has Bad Religion or NoFx playing is right up my alley. First thing, they offered something to drink, but I declined. Logged in to their free guest wifi and waited about 5 minutes total. At the end, she took the 35 seconds to level out my eyebrows, clean up the sideburns and used a straight razor to clean up the neckline. Then topped it all off with a hot towel and relaxing scalp rub. I'm hooked. read more

Here a things that I like in a hair cut: 1. Not super expensive 2. Good haircut 3. Hot towel and shampoo (I'm worth it) 4. Easy location As a dude, that's pretty much it. GENT downtown has all that and the guy who cuts my hair, Dean, does a great job for $35. I'd give it 5 stars but sometimes the music isn't very good. read more

I've been to two of the Gent locations (Edina and Minneapolis) for a total of five visits, and have finally found my go-to barber: Courtney at the Minneapolis location. I went in for a beard trim to reign it in to something more office-appropriate. Courtney asked several (but not too many) questions about the shape/look I was going for, and took a great amount of care with the trim. It was not rushed, and it was clear that she was focused on getting it right. At $15, I consider this a great value. Bonus: they were playing mid-80's new wave. My jam. Your mileage may vary. Scheduled an appointment online via their appointment system. When I showed up for the appointment I was told that the barber was not at work today and I would have to reschedule my cut. I told the gent working the register that my father's wake was that afternoon and that I would appreciate if they can find a way to accomodate my cut. There were 3-4 barbers with only one of them doing a cut. The response? Basically told me to go pound sand and that I'd have to reschedule. I've used Gents before and the cut was fine, though not sure it is worth the money. After the tremendous and staggering lack of taking responsibility for the scheduling error and unwillingness to just use one of the idle barbers to get my cut in, I'm done with this place forever. Maybe I should have rescheduled the wake to accomodate for their scheduling error? SMH. read more

I never leave reviews but this place was horrible. Kristen took a total of 15 mins on my hair and completely screwed up the fade in the back. The front wasn't horrible, it just seemed like she didn't really care or didn't have much experience.whats worse is that I was told that she had the most experience at the end of the cut which made me have to pay more than the advertised $29? I moved up to the Minneapolis area last summer and have been putting off finding a barber that can take care of my beard. After getting to a point where it was too much hassle to try and maintain myself, I took a chance a scheduled an appointment. My only regret is not doing so sooner. I described to Diane what I was looking for out of the trim and she did a fantastic job! She also did a great job of asking questions during the trim to ensure my beard would look exactly how I wanted. I will definitely be scheduling an appointment in the future. read more

Not the cheapest place to get a haircut, but I was very pleased with my shampoo and cut ($40 out the door for everything including tip). They found an appointment for me the same day I called on a Friday and the stylist was friendly and listened to what I thought I wanted and found a cut that actually worked a bit better. read more

I didn't even get my haircut. I simply called the number to see if you could make an appointment by phone or if it had to be done online. The receptionist hung up after I asked. So, I called back and was put on hold and hung up after 10 minutes. I don't care if you only take appointments online, you can simply answer the question. Don't be pretentious and rude. read more

My boyfriend went here to get his beard trimmed, made an appointment for 130, so we had a little time before then to get lunch. We got here at 1:05, and three ladies became unoccupied. Finally got attended to at 150. Another gentleman walked in at 155 and he got attended to promptly. read more

Went in on a Tuesday and scheduled an appointment for the following Thursday. The front desk girl asked me if I'd ever been there before and I said no. The sign in front of the shop says a mens haircut is $29+ but doesn't give any further details. The girl scheduled me with Sam who's apparently the manager and made no mention of price so I just assumed it'd be the $29 price they have advertised. I mean, why would it be more? I get there on Thursday and the guy at the front desk says they'll be ready for me in a minute and I decide to ask about price. He tells me it says $29+ on the sign because it varies based on the stylist and how long they've been there. Maybe this is standard for salons but I'm a guy and I've never been to a place where the price varies by stylist. Apparently Sam charges $37 per haircut. I explain to the front desk guy that I wasn't made aware of her increased price and that I wouldn't be interested if I had to pay that much. Not that I expect them to lower the price for me but he said he'd talk to Sam anyways and find out. Sam comes and grabs me and I ask about price because she doesn't mention it. I explain what happened and she has zero sympathy. Again, I don't expect them to change the price for me. I was fine with just canceling the appointment and going elsewhere. Here is why I wrote the review. Rather than understanding my confusion and trying to explain why she costs more, Sam instead points out that their sign does say $29+ and basically implies that I'm the idiot for not having asked about it when I booked. She doesn't seem to think it's a problem that her front desk girl, after being told I was a first time customer, felt no need to explain how their pricing works and instead books me with one of their most expensive stylists. I really don't care how much they want to charge for haircuts because they obviously have no problem getting customers willing to pay that. My problem is that the manager of the store basically told me to my face that I was wrong for not asking about the price when I booked the appointment. I guess the customer isn't always right when Sam is the manager. She was just downright rude about it. And now they've lost me as a customer for good even though I would've been willing to reschedule with a cheaper stylist. read more

I've been going to GENT once a month for the past year and a half that I have lived here and can't say enough great things about it. When I went to book my first appointment online, I randomly selected Lisa based on her availabilities that day and I'm so glad I did - she is fantastic. I had been going to one of those discount haircut places and have not once been satisfied with the results. Lisa took the time to hear me out and come up with a style that was way more on trend than what I had been doing for years. The hot towel and wash are incredibly relaxing and sometimes she'd even wax my eyebrows which I honestly have always needed done but never would have thought to ask for. Going beyond Lisa's technical abilities, I have really enjoyed my conversations with her while getting my haircuts -- she's incredibly funny and kind. The skyway location is incredibly convenient to run over during a lunch break - and it's an awesome relaxing highlight to the middle of a workday. I'd highly recommend seeing Lisa at GENT for your next cut. read more
