Transferring trains from La Spezia we had an hour lay over. Getting off the train with several bags between all of us, going down the stairs to the underground passage way that takes you below the tracks, was a task. Thankfully there was an escalator going up into the main station area.
This seems to be a small station compared to many I have been through in Europe. There are a good deal of tracks (14 I think) but the station itself does not appear to cover much real estate once away from the tracks.
There is a 'My Chef' cafe with seating in an enclosed area in the main terminal and a juice bar inside, just past the My Chef counter. We chose a table in the terminal area and while one of our group 'guarded' the luggage, we got some coffees, sandwiches, pastry, and one beer. There's always one in the group :D
The crowds came and went as the trains dropped off and picked up. Some of the tracks are accessed by using the underground passageway directly ahead from the entrance while others are accessed off to one side. Signs point the way to the metro.
We got to our connection track in plenty of time. Unfortunately, there is no escalator down from the main terminal and none going up onto the platforms. Oh well, just another reason to pack light. Our train was delayed, and the track changed. Luckily we just had to turn around to get to the new track, and the announcements were in both Italian and English with plenty of warning, so even if we did have to go down and up again, we would have had plenty of time.
Although not bright and shiny new, this station was pretty easy to navigate. There were signs to follow and a place to get a snack. I really like the glass roof letting lots of sunlight into the main terminal. read more
