Stopped by this place today (20.10.11) after a workmates recommended that I switch up my Deli of…read morechoice. You see my local was Lina Stores (notice how I used was). So upon entering the store, I was immediately expecting the classic 'deli snobbery' experience. You know when you go to an authentic Deli where the staff give you the cold stare if you take too lon to order or don't know exactly what you want. Much to my surprise, I was welcomed in a very warm manner. I asked for a selection of meats, and seriously thought this would be the point where they'd start snapping, but nope, again the lovely lady offered a range of sample slices for me to try! Woohoo! To cut a long story short, I came out a happy girl! Lina Stores can keep there over-priced food, along with their moody staff, I'm sticking with my new bestie Camisa & Sons...! P.S. Could have sworn I spotted the 'Son' of Camisa & Sons working in the back room...

I was inspired by my visit to Little Italy in New York. Lots of amazing delis with fresh food…read moreserved by authentic Italian families who had been running the place for generations In London, there isn't any equivalent Italian area but Camisa on Old Compton is a deli straight out of New York. I love the '& Son' on the sign - gives the place a sense of continuity and history The sight of all those hams hanging up as you enter the store is enough to set the cookery brain and the stomach going. There is then the main counter with Italian cheeses galore and some deli items and home made pasta. There is also the full range of tinned and dried goods. The dry pasta from here is better than the fresh stuff from supermarkets. In Italy, they believe the pasta is the star of the dish and the sauce is just there to coat it, not drown it but for that philosophy to work, you need high quality ingredients I left with some pancetta, ham and mini mozzarellas

Firstly, deli/restaurant is a bit of an understated and misleading way to describe this place. This…read moreis more of a café/lunch stop/large amazing house with great study and chatting spaces/deli. If I lived in Greenwich this could easily become my favourite café/weekend reading place/social spot. They serve a full selection of coffees, teas, desserts, pastries, cookies, and cannolis. They also have a wide selection of sandwiches, pastas, salads, and savoury pastries. You could fully spend breakfast, lunch, and dinner here. And they also actually do sell sausages (which is what I associate with a deli, anyway). [ décor / vibe ] This place feels more like someone's really awesome home than a restaurant. The space is large but well-used and well-lit. Enough tables for everyone without feeling cramped. There are three floors - whether you want a quiet nook to lose yourself in a book for hours or a place to chat with a group of friends around a table, you'll find the perfect spot. Servers have charming accents and are very nice. Will gently warn you when the place is about to close without being overbearing. Clean, well-lit, neat photos, whimsical produce crates nailed to the walls with jars and packages of pasta, etc. Charming. [ food ] Order at the front counter and your food will be brought to you. Wish we had a chance to try more of the food, but we only stopped in for tea and a snack. The feta pastry we split was fantastic. Would love to go back and try the cannolis. [ conclusion ] A gem of a spot that you could spend so many weekends exploring. Bring a book and/or a really good friend and stay for hours. Lovely place.

Looks can be deceptive. You might even fail to notice this small cafe by the station. But the wide…read morevariety of dishes and salads they serve you here will blow your mind away. This place is a hidden gem. I think the whole store is run by women. Even the chef, who occasionally pops out to confirm orders. And did I not say this place is total value for money! It is the best place to have breakfast, lunch or afternoon tea or coffee! There are limited seats inside but there are some outside to compensate for that shortage. I'll very impressed with their service and options they have for vegetarians! Brilliant balance! My only concern is to there could be less clutter if they re-arranged the seats in a more sensible way inside the cafe.

There's a photo if you want to see the brilliance. I don't often find myself in Blackheath. It's pricey, it's posh and a longish walk from home. Greenwich is much more convenient for me. But sometimes, I'm tired and jump in a cab home from Blackheath station (a habit I really should get out of). Tonight I did just that. But I was starving. And the Village Deli was open and perfect. Back to that pie. Oh my goodness the pie. Wonderful wonderful mashed potato, which perfectly crisped under the grill (can you tell I haven't been eating carbs much recently?) Yummy meat and veggies - even a stray broadbean to make me feel especially wholesome. It's one of the best shepherds pies I've EVER eaten. And it was only £3.25. I might move in. Instead, because I had to spend over £6 to use my card (my only gripe and I've already forgiven them), i bought to scotch eggs for my lunch tomorrow. If I wasn't too full of pie, I'd have eaten them too. The rest of the place? Seating area for eating in (the do cakes, tea, coffee etc) and I'm assuming they'd warm any of the goodies on display. Staff were friendly. And they're open until 9. I'm in serious lust with Village Deli.
