Paso is not all about wine...well for the most part but if you need a break from wine tasting walk around the park in downtown and go into the shops. We were doing just that and I don't think we had come in here before (since there was no review). It was a nice little place with local stuff and other items that were interesting. There were sample on items, take care with the ghost pepper salt sample, there is a warning but (la-de-da...I'm not listening) and oh yeah...the warning is there for a reason. The sweetest place that always leaves me smiling! I come here whenever I'm looking for a gift for friends or family and this place absolutely never disappoints. The perfect variety of foods, books, knick-knacks and cards for all occasions!! Each item is clearly picked with a very specific, very smart goal in mind. Super with-the-times, but homey and inviting all at once. This store absolutely resonates warmth and kindness, exactly the environment most suited to represent Paso Robles. I have never had a bad experience here- each employee smiles and answers questions with ease. A lot of what is offered also has samples which I think is wonderful and time after time again has caused me to buy something I otherwise wouldn't have. I won't lie... it's a little pricey... but still stands out as the most reasonably priced shop in Downtown Paso so I won't complain about it too much. My most recent experience stood out. I took my three younger sisters in, planning on taking a short trip, but they were of course enamored with the children's table and the books! They took up a lot of space and were somewhat loud, but one employee was extremely accommodating and even brought us all small cups of DELICIOUS almond brittle to try. We didn't even have to ask! What a cool spot! I had never been in before and imagine that this is what Trader Joe's once looked/felt like before they had more than one store. Lots of cool little nick-nacs, and a ton of local products you never knew were made in town. The person working was very nice and offered us samples of some of the products, like pumpkin butter! And there are plenty of self sample stations for salts and candles and other items. There was a real feeling of pride and local awareness of each product and it felt like a real general store in the sense that they had some food, some snacks, some household items, nothing you call complete for shopping needs, but 100% worth a stop in to find something you didn't know you wanted or to find a local alternative product to a national brand perhaps, lots of soaps, seasonings, sauces, etc. read more

This was my 2nd time going to the store and I absolutely love it. My group and I happened upon it in the fall and when we came back to the area this past weekend it was our first stop. I love the variety of products sold and welcoming staff. I'm not a huge shopper, but both times I've gone I've found special items to bring home. Super cute store you could spend quite some time checking everything out. The back has a pretty big kid's section. I bought some Super Beeswax to replace saran wrap. While I was wondering downtown Paso Robles I was desperately searching for some nick nacks to take back to home to the family. After an exhaustive search I came across the visitor center and decided to try to find some items there. I was disappointed at the selection but the young lady behind the counter said that the best place to find cool items would be at the General Store. This place was pretty dang cool. They have a little bit of everything and best of all they had some great shirts in all sizes for my little ones. Which, by the way they can't stop wearing. This is one of those stores that you could spend an hour in looking at everything from books, toys, candles, snacks and so much more. What a great concept for a downtown store. I will need to head back in soon to get some more great after my kids wear these out. read more

They are kind women with a collective discerning eye; I always look forward to coming to the General Store, stealing a small whiff of the Coconut Jam, and seeing what's new. ITEMS I BUY REGULARLY: - The Bittersweet coffee scrub is an absolute delight. I buy this for myself and when I want to give a quality gift; I am taking orders for friends across the country who are now totally addicted to the scrub! - Soap. The General Store stocks locally made soap in a small but colorful variety of scents. My favorites are the new Pumpkin Spice and the floral yet herby Gardener's Bar. These soaps won't dry you out and make every shower luxurious. - Chocolate. The owners do an amazing job at selecting artisan chocolate, most of it organic, some of it in creative mouther-watering flavors like peanut butter and jelly, or bourbon. This is one of the few places in town I can find quality 85% chocolate as well. - Bless Your Heart Bakery bars. Try the Sunflower Annie flavor, unless I've eaten them all, which is likely. YOU SHOULD KNOW THAT... - The General Store stocks artisan mustard, vinegar, honey, and ketchup, everything you need to up your burger game. - The spice mixes are EXCELLENT. Another place I like to take friends and family. They have a large selection of local goods. Baskets, food, lotions, books... If you are looking for a gift for someone look no further. So far I have purchased a cute shirt for my nephew that said Paso Boy and they have onesies for babies and adult shirts as well. I have also tried their popsicles and they are refreshing and perfect for a hot day. I can't wait to try the macaroons and coffee they have. A well appointed store with lots on interesting artisan items. It's one of those fun browse around store where one leaves the hurry mode at the door. Really interesting spices, not run of the mill. Tasting is allowed. The fresh baked unique bacon bread is a must. A couple of over easy eggs with fresh bruschetta made a lovely breakfast the next day.
