I've had this place on my bookmarks for well over a year, so I was excited to finally make it here. The place was pretty empty, but very clean and inviting and the door was open. We ordered two types of toasts and two cold brews. Whoa, I was not expecting it to be over $40. It took much longer than expected, over 20 minutes, and given that there were only two other customers after me, and none around when we arrived, I felt like it was excessive for a toast that had nothing on it that needed to be cooked per se. The owner was friendly when we arrived, but I'm not sure what happened because he was colder halfway through our visit. Service is SLOW! The girl working the register can't write down an order correctly. I corrected her when she read it back but she still made the smoothie wrong and the wrong size coffee. Plus she does not care if she gets an order wrong. I asked for a dash of cream in my iced coffee and my coffee was basically white. On the other hand the food is excellent but we waited an entire hour. Be prepared to have something to do and to entertain your kids for a long time while you wait . I love the food, hate the wait and the attitude of the service. read more

This place is charming and delicious. It's a little expensive but ALL of the ingredients are very fresh. I'd rather pay the money for good healthy food. Ashley was the one who suggested avocado toady with fresh organic tomatoes and an egg. She also gave me some arugula. I ordered the green drink. "This will make you feel good,"she said. She was 100% correct. All of the other breakfast places around are those unhealthy bagel places. This was a wonderful find. read more

The proprietors of this place, first of all, are so nice and very cool. The place is very eclectic and your eyes will wander once inside. The food/drinks that I've tried have all been excellent. The cold brew and iced coffee are better than any café in Brooklyn, the smoothie and juice concoctions are well thought out and made with fresh ingredients. I will say that everything is a bit "pricey", but you get what you pay for - it's worth it. read more

i've grown up going to the general store and will continue!! the general store has been in my life every summer since as long as i can remember. i worked for ash and joe last summer and safe to say that i've been taught many values that i will never forget. the food is healthy and fresh and the service is great! now with the order ahead feature nobody should complain about the wait time. We love coming here to read their books and have avocado toast. They are so happy and welcoming and the food is sooo fresh and delicious. Everything is made while you wait so...trust the process and be patient. They packed this nice little avocado toast box for me to take on the train. read more

I've grown up on Joseph St. every summer and this location used to be a video rental store when I was a kid. General store is great! Not your typical breakfast spot. The food is all delicious. My friends and I all got a few different things and everything was fresh and delicious! On top of that, the store itself was very cool and was filled with a lot of vintage items which really gave it such an Fun and different feel! They also make a ton of different juices, freshly squeezed orange juice, green juices, etc. Those were tasty as well. Last but not least, the staff was awesome. I will never come here again. 3 strikes & you're out. First two issues small ones BUT This was the straw that broke camels back .... I decided to stop in for coffee. ON AUGUST 18th to be exact. A Nice young couple comes up to ask girl when will their order be ready. They state they've waited 35 minutes so far for a simple order that still wasn't ready. They now needed to leave wanted to cancel order since they couldn't get straight answer as to when it'll be done. They kept asking nicely how much longer? Mind you no one was really in this place people sitting already ate. AND this man comes out of kitchen looking for a fight saying "this isn't WAWA or 7Eleven fast food. I think it was the owner which is even more unacceptable. Actually demeaning this couple like they're losers who only eat crap food. Mind you he doesn't know these people so how the hell does he know if they go to those places (I assume) my husband and I stood right near them while the rude non professional business owner argued with these (already paid for their food) customers. I was so disgusted at that display I told couple leave I'll give them their money back out of my wallet ! I left my paid for coffee on the table outside and left too. I am a locale he's so lucky he didn't pull that nonsense with me! I will now every day during season and off season tell people don't give this place the time of day. It's really hit or miss with this place. I came here once when it was pretty dead and I had a good experience. I just came during a busier time and it was absolte chaos. There was ZERO organization and I was skipped multiple times while waiting in line to place my order. I ended up leaving empty handed. A friend in my group ordered a coffee and it didn't taste good. The one redeeming quality of this place is the charming atmosphere. My recommendation is to get here when it's not busy, and maybe stick to a basic coffee and a pastry they get from another establishment. read more

While on vacation I usually do not go to place more then once, because I want to try everything. I broke that rule at the General Store. Wow. The avocado toast is amazing ! I also had a latte (yum) and on the way out got a smoothie (Popeye) to go. When I went back today I had a chicken salad sandwich with a Probiotic Smoothie and again it was so good! This place is so fun and SO delicious! I only come to Lavalette once a year but stopping at The General Store as frequently as possible is a must! I have a gluten intolerance and they have amazingly delicious options. My family that does not share this intolerance still begs to spend as much time here as possible.
