Came to Gemologic to appraise an engagement ring I recently purchased. Bruce is a pretty knowledgeable guy no doubt about that. He knows what he is doing. I do wish however he would have gone into some more information between the differences between appraisal types. I went with a retail replacement appraisal which assumes you buy from a brick and mortar store, and the diamond does not have fluorescence. (Full retail price.) Some savvy buyers however will buy diamonds with fluorescence, and from online diamond vendors, like in my case, in an effort to save money. There was a huge disparity between Bruce's appraisal vs what an actual value replacement appraisal would be in my case, so in the end, I ended up not using the Bruce appraisal, and Insured my jewelry for average market value of like florescent diamonds being sold from internet vendors. Which was much closer than what an insurance valuation would be. Being new and inexperienced I did not know what questions I should have asked. Anyway, to sum up this post. Bruce's insurance appraisal was not bad. It was spot on actually, but if you are not looking to buy your goods online, and/or are buying florescent diamonds, it would be more useful if you asked Bruce for an actual replacement value appraisal, which is far more useful to ensure you are not paying inflated premiums. The downside of this is that there is far less of a margin until you need a new appraisal, but since you should be getting appraisals fairly regularly anyway, (within 3 years) Then, it shouldn't be much of an issue, especially since Bruce's prices are just so reasonable. read more

TRUST BRUCE! He tells the honest truth and will not hold back! I sent him an email requesting an appraisal on an engagement ring, and right off the bat, Bruce made sure I wasn't wasting my time and replied in the email that the diamond should be set before he appraises the ring. Therefore, instead of going to Bruce first, I went to get my diamond set. Once I got that done, Bruce told me the jeweler that I went to (Ara at AY Jewelry) did a poor job setting my diamond. Ara did mention that the diamond that I got (rectangular shaped radiant cut) would be difficult to set on the setting because the setting was meant for a square cut diamond. Ara assured me he could make it work, but obviously, he didn't. Bruce recommended another jeweler for me and made sure this jeweler did it right. Additionally, while he was appraising my diamond, I also told him about my horrible experience with Fantasy Diamonds in the diamond district (they rip you off with fake diamonds). Bruce gave me the skinny and said the owners of Fantasy Diamonds previously got kicked out of a kiosk because they were caught switching real diamonds with fake diamonds. HA! Bruce knows all the dirt about the diamond district because his family has been in the business for generations. So if you want the straight, honest opinion about who to go to and who to avoid, talk to BRUCE! The diamond district is filled with too many liars and frauds taking advantage of people when they are emotionally vulnerable. Bruce is not one of them. read more

My experience with Bruce was easily one of the best that I've had in the diamond district. I didn't come in with an appointment and he stopped what he was doing to make sure that my diamond was legit. He even told me if the diamond was not what I bought, that he would personally escort me to the place and rip the sellers a new one. That, right there, told me I was in good hands.
