They are very very eager to please so they tone down the heat of their main courses to meet Dutch standards of mildness. (They run a little hotter on the side dishes which are provided in copious quantity) But the food is totally entertaining and wonderful. Sometimes even if you are eating Ethiopian or Mexican which is supposed to be firey - it is not unpleasant to eat like a little kid off the milder food that mommy made you. Describing every dish would take forever since rijjstafels tend to serve a great many dishes. But the grand slam home run was an egg poached until it was hard boiled but round and flat like a disk - served with a hot pepper paste on top. The staff is very very very friendly ... with both the waiter and the owner having extended conversations with us. usually i am a grumpy guy who wants to be left alone to eat - so i want the staff to bring me the food invisibly and then go away so i can concentrate on the business at hand. but they were friendly charismatic nice people. So we had a fine time eating there. I suspect the Indonesian restaurant of my dreams is still out there waiting to be found ... but this had all of the pleasures of eating at a homey domestic version of P.F. Changs.
