I am officially 9mo. post op from my TKR that Dr. Thomas Gautsch did for me last October 0f 2025! I would have to admit that my recovery was not fast like some are, however, my recovery took every bit of patience, endurance, and listening to my Physical Therapist, Amy at Dr. Gautsch's Clinic. I have stayed very consistent with my exercises that I was given thus far. I had to preserve when I thought I just could not. Today , I can say, I am so grateful for Dr. Gautsch and his expertise in this minimally invasive technique that he has literally mastered! Dr. Gautsch also has incredible staff with Nurse Ashley, and the girls in the front office and my incredible, patient, caring PT Amy! The care that the office team gives is loving, highly knowledgeable and encouraging! My story is that I have had bone on bone knee pain and discomfort for long over 15 plus years. I kept active and suffered at night. I lived on over the counter NSAID's and finally went to a daily prescription to manage the discomfort. If you're reading this you know what I am talking about! When I met with Dr. Gautsch he completely understood my situation! He was very easy to discuss my future with and how I would love to have an active life again! I have 5 grandchildren that are under the age of 8 and it was becoming debilitating to keep up. Going to the Zoo sounded like torture to have to walk and I surely didn't want that any more! He explained the surgical procedure with my husband and I and made it all very easy to understand! I did do all of my PT at the Southern Sports Clinic there at his office and I am so grateful I did! I have to say a huge THANK YOU to my precious husband and our family plus our friends , as this was everyone's involvement to get me going after surgery. My family would help me bend to achieve my range of motion and CHEER me on! My Grandchildren would help my with my exercise's! I had a huge amount of support! Thank team! Today, I can walk miles! I finally can golf and go all day on my feet with out the pain and discomfort I had literally experienced for years and years. Thank you Dr. Gautsch for helping me get LIFE BACK! I would encourage all that have TKR Dr. Gautcsh knows exactly what his is doing and has done thousands upon thousands of TKR's and I am one very Grateful gal! read more

Only problems was the clamps or staples in your knee after surgery. Once you worked thru the pain it's wonderful... Other than that I have nothing to say but wonderful praises to Dr. Gautsch. Entire staff is great n you'll the PT's he's got serving in office their all are wonderful... read more

I recently had my second knee replacement done by the wonderful Dr Gautsch and team. My first was in January. It makes a huge difference that I qualified for his minimally invasive technique which was more effective, less visible scarring and less pain than the regular surgery. He instilled confidence and was so kind. I wasn't afraid,especially on my second one, as I had complete trust in he and his team. My friends say that they haven't seen me walk so well in years as I am mostly pain free and legs are very sturdy. Don't put knee surgery off due to fear. I recently had a knee replacement. I did quite a bit of research beforehand because I wanted an experienced surgeon that has a proven track record of success. I also wanted a doctor that used the most modern technology and surgical methods. After a considerable amount of investigation, I chose Dr. Thomas L. Gautsch at the Southern Sports Medicine Institute, located in Gallatin, TN. It has now been five weeks since Dr. Gautsch replaced my right knee. It feels great, the X-Rays of his work are absolutely perfect and I am driving, going up and down stairs and walking like a young guy again. I have absolutely zero pain in my right knee. The amazing part is that my knee feels absolutely normal. I can't tell that there is a prosthetic implant in there. The bottom line is when choosing an Orthopedic surgeon you really need a craftsman. It sounds funny but what they do requires a lot of manual talent, attention to detail and exact fitting of the prosthetic implant. Dr. Gautsch is an excellent artist and does the knee replacements without cutting muscle or tendons. He is also the kind of guy that when you meet him, you immediately like him. He is friendly, sincere and has a great pre-surgery manner. I can't say enough good about the man. My husband and I have waited three months before writing this review. Dr Gautsch told us that by three months he would be a distant memory in our minds. He was right...except for the fact that we are so grateful to him for the amazing job he did on my husband's left knee. He did a total replacement and because he does a side cut instead of a cut down the front center of the knee the recovery is so much easier. No muscle cut, no tourniquet needed, no heavy sedation, done as an outpatient and you are up and walking an hour or so after surgery. Rehab is also much easier and faster. We live in South Georgia and had heard so many good things about Dr. Gautsch that we made the 7 hour trip to Nashville (he has an office in Nashville and Gallatin) to talk to him. After meeting him, xrays being taken, and then discussing our options - we booked the surgery. We are so glad we did! My husband's legs are unbelievably bowed. We never thought he would find a doctor to be able to fix his leg so he didn't limp, because when you straighten one and the other is bowed...there is a difference in length. Dr. Gautsch's first profession was as a biomedical engineer. He was able to see what was needed and did it! Shaved the bone and lined everything up perfectly. The internal medicine doctor we use in our town had bowed legs and had knee replacement surgery on one leg. He then had to have a lift put in one shoe because they didn't have the expertise to make them the same length. We didn't want that. We rented an AirBnb house for 3 weeks so we could start physical therapy with therapists who are familiar with Dr. Gautch's type of surgery. We really didn't have to do that but felt more comfortable doing it. Dr. Gautch's office then sent the protocol to our local therapists and they have been able to easily follow it. They have also made known their appreciation for how much faster my husband is rehabbing than the normal knee replacement patients they have (he is 74 years old). Now he is out doing yard work, washing the cars, and generally doing what he wants to do. Not to say he is done healing because it is a work in progress and he continues to go to the gym and stay active. From what we understand, the knee will keep getting better and better for up to a year. This is not a walk in the park! It is major surgery with careful caregiving for the first month. We have had some normal issues but Dr. Gautsch and his staff have been there for us and have checked on us to make sure all was going well when we did have questions or needs. I chose Dr. Gautsch after researching and seeing several other Doctors to do my knee replacement. His technique is the fastest way to get back to normal life. He does not cut the muscle or the tendon and goes in from the side. My surgery was 11/21/19, I went to his facility Indian lake surgi-center at 5:00 am and was home by noon walking without a walker. On 11/25/19 I started physical therapy, this is where your part comes in and its up to you to get back on track, however his PT team is compassionate and geared towards getting you on the road to recovery. It was an hour from where I live but I never missed a session and graduated 1/03/20. Today is 01/08/20 I saw him for my final appt. and am cleared for all activity. I just love Dr. Gautsch. He has done surgery on my shoulder and both of my knees. I am so glad I found him. My surgeries with him have been so much better than the first one I had with another doctor, and his therapists are wonderful. I can do anything I want to now and the pain is gone.
